Cordero to throw for teams this week

Former Nationals closer Chad Cordero will be throwing for teams starting this week, an industry source confirmed. To characterize it as a showcase, however, would be a little too formal. At this point, Cordero and his representatives are encouraged enough about his progress from labrum surgery last summer that they've invited teams to send scouts and watch his regular throwing sessions at a training facility near his home in Anaheim. He's currently throwing from distance off flat ground on a schedule that should put him on a mound in early February and throwing side sessions when pitchers and catchers report to camps later in the month.

The Tigers are one of several teams who have expressed interest in Cordero this offseason, and they're expected to watch him. The Diamondbacks will also reportedly take a look, according to the Arizona Republic. A slow-moving market for free-agent relievers arguably works to Cordero's advantage, allowing him to progress and prove himself before getting a deal, potentially with a chance to close again if he can be ready for games around the start the season.

if the Yankees were to pick up...Chad Cordero they could use their bull pen talent in a trade package with Nady or Swisher to aquire another starter...or they could use both Nady and Swisher with their pitching talent to aquire a better younger outfield talent...
although the Toronto Blue Jays are in the AL East...they might be willing to part with Alex Rios for the right package.
Yuan Miranda could also be involved in this trade...with pitching and Xavier Nady...
Similar packages could be proposed for Curtis Granderson or Nate Mclouth...

From the Tigers standpoint, trading Granderson doesn't make sense. They just traded away Matt Joyce as their fourth outfielder, and if they trade Granderson that's leaving them with a hole in centerfield with their best option being someone like Clete Thomas (unproven) or Brent Clevlen (cannot hit). Aside from that, their defense would be a liability as well without Granderson. You have Ordonez in right who's range has decreased in recent years, and have Carlos Guillen in left who is an injury waiting to happen.

From the Pirates standpoint, trading away McClouth to get Nady back doesn't make sense period.

I doubt Granderson or McClouth would be traded. The Pirates wouldn't want to trade McClouth to the Yankees for a deal involving Nady. Granderson won't be traded because the Tigers don't have a fourth outfielder (they traded away Matt Joyce). If they trade Granderson then they have a hole in the lead off spot, as well as a defensive liability. Ordonez is losing range, and it's hard to predict what Guillen would do in LF.

It's about time we read about DD doing something to address the bullpen. Cordero's health is a big risk, but he was a workhorse out of the pen for four years prior to his injury last year. Anyone is better than Rodney. What's Mike Henneman doing these days? Hah!

I'm disappointed that they didn't make a play for Trevor Hoffman, who will sign a short term deal for not much money. He should be able to at least replace Todd Jones. The Tigers are desperate for bullpen help. We have nobody in the pen.
