Peavy deal to Cubs dead
LAS VEGAS -- San Diego general manager Kevin Towers just told reporters that a proposed deal to send pitcher Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs was dead.
"It doesn't look like anything is going to happen with the Cubs," Towers said.
Towers indicated that Cubs GM Jim Hendry pulled out of the deal.
"He said he's got other things going on. I respect his position," Towers said.
Towers will meet with team CEO Sandy Alderson on Monday and speak with Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, in the coming days to see where they go next.
Towers said one option is pulling Peavy off the trading block and going into the 2009 season with him at the front of the starting rotation.
-- Corey Brock
This is the first time Hendry has truly screwed up. There is no reason in the world to value a utility man and/or prospects more than a #1 starting pitcher.

Well I guess the upside to this is we dont lose vitters. Although the downside of not getting rid of marquis while acquiring peavy is pretty much worse....o well. We'll have a winning ballclub next year, doesnt matter.

yeah i agree, but as me being a braves fan, and the yankees buying everyone no way to outbid them for Burnett maybe the Braves will contact Towers about Peavy again.

Good. Why we would trade one of our two top prospects for Derosa to help the Cubs get into the "uber" rotation status baffled me.
No disrespect to Derosa. He is a servicable player but to expect him to replace Utley and then Burrell is just too much to expect or accept.

Wow thats kind of sad. But I think the deal the Padres put on the table was asking too much, just because Vitters was there. DeRosa, Pie, Marquis and maybe Hart would've been fair but well everything is over now. I was in favor of this trade until Vitters' name came in, and I'm also in favor of giving Hoffpauir a chance because of his numbers. What makes me feel sick is that it has been a week of just rumors and we are getting out of it with nothing in our hands. I know there's a lot left for Spring Training, but until now I dont see how a team without Kerry Wood and with Gregg (the only moves the Cubs have done) is a better team than last year.

Giving up 4 or 5 players just to get Peavy is a little excessive. Would it have been nice to get him? Sure it would, but Derosa does a lot of things for the club and pitching is not a major issue with the team. We need a good left handed bat in the middle of the lineup to start with. Hendry rarely makes a bad deal. It brought in Aramis and Lofton mid season of 03 for that Hill kid that never panned out. He knows what he is doing and I have a ton of faith in him to get that lefty bat we need.

exactly, chris yall rotation is already very good, no need to give up so much for a player that is not a need. Get that Lefty Bat in the lineup

Just wait, its not over yet. Towers said there was no chance earlier this week and then they were close and then they got apart again. So what, in about 4 hours a new rumor will surface. I don't believe anything is dead until the season starts in April. Towers knows he has to shed salary and he is asking way too much. By saying its over, he is hoping to gain an advantage and get the Cubs to throw in someone else. A deal will eventually happen, maybe not with the Cubs, but something will happen. Id love to have Peavy in the Cubs rotation and I think he wants to be in our rotation, but Towers is impossible to deal with. It's almost like he doesn't want to trade him but knows he has to so he makes all these attempts and then goes to far.

i thought he was crazy to pass up the Braves initial offer we were giving up alot for him, its gonna boil down to either him having to get less than he could have or some team says hell with it and gives them a huge package.

As a die hard since being in the womb....I am just waiting for Hendry to pull of some of his magic. It seems that year in, year out, he always makes something happen! He is by far one of the best GM's in the game. He see's stuff we don't as fans sometimes. The left handed bat should be priority one and will instantly improve this team. Anything that comes our way after that will be iceing on another division championship. (I dont talk about World Championships anymore!) Rick

I still think that the problem with Towers and this Peavy-to-Cubs situation is that he is asking too much to a team that really doesn't have the necessity for Peavy, Hendry would've never accepted a deal like this involving Vitters with the rotation we have. He asked too much to the Braves and now asks too much to the Cubs, he wont ever complete a deal if he keeps doing this.

The Cubs should get Peavy period. It is so infrequent a player like Peavy says I WANT TO BE A CUB. In time before the season starts, someone will take Marquis as he is a good number 4 SP, but if u cant unload Marquis, what about Harden in the bull pen.
I heard the Cubs were offerring Pie, Marshall, DeRosa and a pitcher, didn't hear Vitters and for these 4 players, Peavy is so much better and I like Marshall and DeRosa a lot. DeRosa is so versatile but his numbers can be better and others are certainly better.

Last pitcher of Peavys caliber just retired Monday, his name was greg Maddux, don't let Peavy get away.

It doesnt matter if Peavy was singing GO CUBS GO and wanted to be a Cub, Why should Hendry care about that? If anyone should care it's Towers, bc next year, he's going to have a player who does not want to be there. Towers was asking for an arm and a leg in this deal and acting like he had complete bargaining power. I am glad Hendry backed out..Towers' job was to unload payroll, an he asked for too much in return for Peavy when teams knew there primary goal was to cut costs. I will be happy enough if the Cubs get the Unit..

I'm a yankees fan (die-hard) but i got a chance to see Peavy in person at the stadium and if you have a chance to put a young ace, arguably the best pitcher in baseball to your rotation i think you have to. It is obvious the Cubs have a great rotation as is but if they add Peavy it just gets that much better. Derosa is a great player to have on a team but if you have to give him up to get Peavy you pull the trigger on that one. he is old and there are plenty of people that can fill his void (ie. a Miguel Cairo type) Peavy on the Cubs would give them the best rotation i have seen in a long while.
Also that idea of Harden in the Pen at first i thought was ridiculous but after thinking about it and his injury issues it might not be a bad idea. Maybe a closer because he has electric stuff he was averaging around 10 K's per 5 innings for a little while last year. but just the fact of keeping him healthy and contributing is a good idea. Idk if he'd be up for that though.

I can't say that I wouldn't like DeRosa for insurance while Utley was out, and then to cover LF, but I see no reason why the Phillies should help the Cubs get a top of the rotation arm, while we give up a pitcher we may need in 2009 in Happ. If they wanted Kendrick and the backup catcher, I would do it.
I'm not all that upset that this deal went away.

your absolutley right bill maginnis if i were a phillies fan i would not want a rival NL team to bolster their already stacked rotation w/ Peavy.
Thats like Boston getting Peavy that = NO Bueno

Especially when the Phillies aren't getting anything great in return who can contribute now.

Well, the Phillies would be getting DeRosa in return, which is something that they will need in 2009. But I don't want to help the Cubs all that much. I know that Peavy has a no-trade but maybe the Phillies should look into him themselves. Tower really appears to want to move him and his salary.

Ruben Amaro (Phillies GM) has said that he does not want to take on any huge salaries, and while Peavy's deal may be "manageable", it would take a crap load of the Phils prospects to get him. i already heard Happ, Carrasco, and Donald mentioned, and you know it would take more than that. not a good deal for the Phils. =)

Peavy is a great pitcher, no doubt about it and any team would be better off with him in their starting rotation, but how long can the Cubs keep spending money when their owners, The Tribune, are negotiating bankruptcy protection with creditors? I give them credit, they are spending money like it is going out of style and trying to buy the ever elusive World Series title.
Also, there are a lot of Cub fans out here talking about that " lefty bat" to spark the lineup.....what happened to Fukudome, the 2008 National League's starting right fielder in the All-Star game?

Peavy is a greater need than most of us want to admit. Imagine Harden is gone after next year or cannot pitch for most of the year. we are down to 3 starters without Peavy and Harden. Plus, his contract is reasonable for his talent, especially when you see what will come from the Burnett and CC signings.
Time to sell out the youth of the farm for today. Remember how Corey and Felix have been untouchable? For what?

I still don't think this deal is dead yet. Towers is just trying to push Hendry into making a bad deal by trying to make him decide quick. Everyone, including Towers, knows that the Cub's cannot pull off this trade with Marquis and their roster. Don't be surprised to see this deal come back to life when Marquis is moved.

I have been a cubs fan for 47 tears. I have seen a lot of stupid trades through the years, some going back to maddox, and even Lou Brock...To assume we do not need anything different pitching wise is ridiculous. Are we going to play the pirates 20 times again? IS Hardin going to be well all year. Will Zambrano finally grow up? Will Lilly decide to give up 40 homers this year. I thought Marquis pitched over his head last year, and Marshall is average at best. Why are we going to have to babysit that self aborbed Soriano again. He should be fined for embarrassing us all with that stupid hop....It goes on an on. The mental make up of this group will never win anything big unless you have the people who are winners, want to win all the time, and can show others how to do it. Most of them come across as nice guys who enjoy playing outside 3 hours a day. There is no focus or true desire..and thats the truth....

Damn Rivera your a harsh fan. I love soriano because he grew up on my team but we did get Arod for him so its not so bad.
