Mets reportedly close to signing K-Rod

The conjecture of the past two days and, more accurately, of the past two months, may finally be turning into something substantial. The Mets are on the brink of signing free agent closer Francisco Rodriguez, according to a published report, and could finalize a deal within the next 24 hours.

"I am more optimistic than I have ever been," Rodriguez's agent, Paul Kinzer, told the New York post late Monday night.

Mets GM Omar Minaya met with Rodriguez and Kinzer on Sunday, and again with Kinzer alone on Monday. The first meeting resulted in a contract offer, reportedly for three years.

No doubt about it, this is a big move for the Mets, but in many ways it's rather anticlimactic . The reason being everyone saw Rodriguez as a perfect fit in New York. Minaya has generated some buzz with this signing, but any person can tell you that the Mets are no where near being done this offseason.

They still have plenty of need for starters, an outfielder, the rest of the bullpen, and possibly targeting second base and catcher. Basically they saved 30 million from the initial 5 year/75 million offer to K-Rod, so look for that money to be invested into hitting. I'm sure there was an agenda to address pitching already even if they signed K-Rod long term, so wow things will get interesting because the Mets have money and needs, but their biggest need was taken care of.

My hunch, At this point look for a name that Minaya loves: Chad Cordero. No one has talked about Cordero, but I feel he is Minaya's target: a proven closer who had an off year due to injury. He would slot in as the 8th inning man, for a 1-year deal to re-establish his market next year. The Rockies are being too demanding for Street, so I feel Minaya goes with Cordero. If Minaya does that, I think he will send Castillo and Heilman in a trade together for some outfielder, and then make his move on Hudson. Just a hunch.
