Giants showing interest in Cantu

Could the Marlins be looking to deal another power hitter for pitching? A report by Tim Brown on Yahoo! Sports claims the Marlins have had discussions with the Giants about sending third baseman Jorge Cantu to San Francisco for lefty starter Jonathan Sanchez.

Cantu enjoyed a strong season with the Marlins, connecting on 29 home runs, while leading the team with 95 RBIs. Eligible for arbitration, Cantu is in line for a hefty pay raise after he earned about a half-million in 2008.

The Marlins have been considering switching Cantu from third base to first base. He projects to bat either third or cleanup in 2009. Cantu was part of history this past season as the Marlins became the first MLB team ever to have four infielders connect on 25 or more home runs. Mike Jacobs, who hit 32 homers, was dealt to the Royals on Oct. 30.

If Cantu is traded, it clears first base for Gaby Sanchez, and Emilio Bonifacio would have a better chance of winning the third base job.

Sanchez is a promising lefty who was 9-12 with a 5.01 ERA in '08. He struck out 157 in 158 innings.

I would rather keep Sanchez, he's going to be a much better pitcher next season now that he can tailor his training program towards starting and lasting through the season starting.

I would rather keep Sanchez also! I agree, I think he's going to be a lot better next year. Also, if we get Renteria, we don't need another older infielder. We've got enough good young infielders in our system already.

this would be the marlins management going nuts.!!! how are they going to be willing to trade the mos consistent player we had all 08 for a pitcher we don't need. our rotation is great as it is right now

They need a big bopper. To give up Sanchez for Cantu will most likely be a mistake. If Cantu was a free agent or came without such a loss. How do you replace Sanchez? Maybe you make a valiant effort for Sabathia. This becomes a problem. C.C. will make more than Zito and eventually Lincecum will need to be the highest paid pitcher in the league. I don't see how you get C.C. without dumping Zito and I don't know what you get for him. I think Zito would be better off with an American League team. More than likely you lose Sanchez, Cain or both trying for a corner infielder and don't get CC. This means the young pitching will have to come up and we have to rely on Lowry. We have no idea what he will have and if he can stay healthy.
