Dodgers, Yankees haven't talked
Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti knocked down a Foxsports.com report that he is "again talking" to the Yankees about acquiring second baseman Robinson Cano, with the Yankees interested in Matt Kemp and pitching.
"It'd be nice to talk first," Colletti said.
The Dodgers do need a second baseman with Jeff Kent a free agent and possibly retiring, but Colletti has be consistently reluctant to deal Kemp because of his youth and potential. The Dodgers also are in no position to be dealing pitching, as they are looking to replace six free-agent pitchers, most notably Derek Lowe, Brad Penny, Greg Maddux, Joe Beimel and Chan Ho Park.
Dodgers interest in Cano is logical, as manager Joe Torre and third-base coach Larry Bowa had him with the Yankees. -- Ken Gurnick
How's this?
Get Andruw healthy and fit - deal Matt for Cano. Sign Texeira and trade Loney for pitching.

Boy im glad ggarvey is not the Dodgers GM
Kemp is a far more potent offensive player than Cano and Kemp's potential hasnt come close to being recognized yet. If we have 150 million to spend, it should no way be on Texiera - why upgrade a position that doest need it.
Im assuming if this is a Foxsports rumor then it may have come from Rosenthal . . . . . enough said

there is no way that Colleti will trade Loney for pitching. I could see him trading Kemp and then signing an OF(Abreu, Dunn, Burrell etc)

Why is it the East Coast media continues to fuel this false rumor? I'm sure the Dodgers are interested in Cano, but the Yankees and Yankee fan boys in the media are insane if they think they're getting any of the previously mentioned players (Kemp, Martin, Billingsley, Kershaw).

DO NOT TRADE MATT! I'D RATHER THEY PUT OUT AN INEXPENSIVE TEAM THAN TRADE MATT.

How's this: The Nationals want Loney. So trade Loney for Zimmerman. Sign Dunn to play 1B. Sign Manny. DeWitt plays 2B. Trade Pierre for anything/ nothing. Just get him off the roster. Pick up another retread pitcher that the Dodgers seem to do so well over the past 10 years.
Report any abuse or spam
Why would the Nationals trade Loney for Zimmerman, in part of 2 seasons Loney OPSed over 900 before falling to 772 last year. Zimmerman posted a 774 OPS last year so it's not like he's much of an improvement. His highest OPS in his career aside from a 58 at-bat span in '05 is 822. Not to mention that Zimmerman is set to make about $5 million in arbitration while Loney is still cost controlled and under contract for more years. Additionally Dunn will cost what? $12 million at the low end but probably more...let's say $14 million, and Manny will cost $25 or so, all while the Dodgers are in a cost-maintenance frame of mind. Not to mention that Martin will be arbitration eligible and up for a big raise, and I think Ethier too though I'm not sure on that. The Dodgers traded for Blake and Manny and refused to add payroll, and the McCourts don't have, or at least aren't willing to spend the resources that the Steinbrenners/Fenway Group have/will spend. That idea just isn't feasible and is likely detrimental to the long term future of the Dodgers.
PS- Zimmerman is the face of the Nationals and I'm not even sure they'd trade him straight up for Loney. Being from DC, they talk about him like a god, but he has yet to show the value they would ask in return for him, especially considering his coming arbitration costs.

That's meant to be the Dodgers in the first sentence there.

Sign the big unit one year. Trade Pierre to a team desparate for a leadoff hitter for middle relief or possible fifth starter, even if picking up some of his salary. Then, sign Furcal for 3 or 4 years--sweeten the offer a bit, and sign Casey Blake, good clubhouse presence. MAKE Jones get into shape to play left field, and then use the money for starting pitching--hopefully CC. Don't let the youth go, unless it's second tier youth, not last year's starters. Get Kemp, Loney, and Ethier on the weights for more power, and get ANDRUW IN SHAPE NOW.

Wow, I'm surprised at the Dodger fans, to say you wouldn't do a Kemp for Cano straight up deal is ridiculous. What exactly has Kemp accompished? I know theres a lot of potential, but theres tons of potential with Cano as well and he's a proven hitter. Put him back with Torre and the guy could put up hall of fame numbers, if anything the Yanks should ask for more.

I'm hope Cano goes nowhere. He's had one mediocre year and we'e ready to deal him away? That's the problem with us. No patience! He's been over .300 every year he's been in the majors except last year. Let the kid work out his mechanical flaws and I bet he bounces back. We can all see the talent he has. To me trading him would be a knee jerk reaction. Kind of like when we traded Soriano after he had the bad post season in 2003. I know we got A-Rod in return, and for the most part I like A-Rod, but how many World Series have we been to since then? Keep Cano. He will be fine. GO YANKS!!!

Well that's just absurd. #1 Kemp has more time left under team control, secondly what did Cano "prove" this year? He posted a 715 OPS and a .305 OBP, meanwhile Kemp registered at 799 and .340 respectively. You can't really argue position premium because Kemp played capably in CF while leading the league in outfield assists, and Cano was questioned some at 2b. Do I believe Cano was as bad as this year (really only an awful April)? No, I don't. But to say he's proven to an extent that Kemp isn't is a bit much. And if he IS more proven than Kemp, then doesn't his potential have to be less? You can't have it both ways.
The bottom line is that they are both great players with bright futures, which means they aren't likely to be traded by either team and you can't really fault each team for liking their guy more. Additionally- while Cano's future is bright, his ceiling does not approach Kemp's, though Kemp is not likely to reach it. Kemp has prodigious power, and ridiculous speed for someone who checks in at around 230 lbs. He is a legit 5 tool player, and Cano, while providing above average power for a 2b, just cannot match Kemp in the power department.

To WBB83, since when does playing for a specific manager guarantee anyone is going to put up HOF numbers. By now Kemp is as proven a hitter as Cano with alot more potential to be tapped than Cano. Dodgers need to behave somewhat as if they are a big market team and fill a couple of holes through FA and leave the kids alone. That's one hell of a nucleus they have right now and they will come through if allowed the opportunity to mature in the big leagues.

You have 65 m to spend, 22m on CC (who is itching to play in SoCal), 25m to Manny(he adds power and confidence to a team that need it), 6m to Blake, Let McDonald and Schmid compete for the #5 spot, give de Jesus a shot at short. Spend the other 12m on holes or more pitching. Trade or give away Jones and Pierre! Either way we need to bite the bullet on (Jones/Schmid) their combined salary of 36m falls off next year! Manny will make that up in revenue this year. This formula has let the club keep it's young core and made them better than last years club. I don't expect the Dodgers to make a big bang at the winter meeting after all they are the DODGERS, they would rather throw big $$$$ away ala Jones/Schmid than be legit perrenial contenders.
Why is the hot stove always cold for my team!!! signed DODGER FAN.

We should keep all our young players. The y will grow into super stars. We let one get away and he was the leader of the group. Promote DeJesus and try to reaquire Joel Guzman. He is the power bat at shortstop that we have been missing. He can be had for a song and a dance and can watch him grow. Keep Manny!

Talks of trading Cano...... Is this world going insane? I don't doubt Cano will be in the running for MVP in 2009... so he had a bad year... but what I hear about his hitting in the Dom. Republic.... you better believe he will have a record year..... so all you out there thinking that Brian Cashman will trade away a future super star they are sadly mistaken. That would have been like trading away Jorge Posado, Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera in their 3rd year of pro baseball..... We aren't giving up on Kennedy or Hughes so why Cano who has already proven he can play at the major league level.....?

Clearly all this talk of Cano being traded must hold some water.
Cano is notorious for his slow starts and then heats up in the second half when the trade talks start not to mention his inconsistency at second. Let's face it he's been in the big's, what like 4 years, and he's still making rookie mistakes at second. Is he going to get better, who knows at this point. Now the Yankee home page say's Cano is learning how to hit in winter ball? ugh, enough already let's trade him for some pitching before he forgets how to hit all together.

I still say no way is Cano back in 09. He's worth to much in a trade right now, it's just a matter of time...

if you look on dodgers.com you can see an interview where ned colletti says hes not dealing Loney, Kemp, Martin, Broxton, or Kershaw

i'n glad ggarvey isn't in the dodgers front office. matt kemp and james loney have a lot o fpotential and they will be all stars for all we know, but why get texiera if we have a great first baseban and as for andruw jones forget it, he's done and we all know it. he's not gong to be coming back to the dodgers. we have future stars on the team and they dont' need to be traded for someone to take their place. even if andruw jones is healthy, he will do just as bad, so we can forget about even talking bout him. dodgers should sign sabathia or manny and maybe sign orlando hudson, and maybe trade for adrian beltre, but as far as i'm concerned kemp, loney, and our other young propects sre untouchable.

Outfielders are a dime a dozen. Don't trade a young 2nd baseman who hits, hits for power and runs and has improved steadily on defense for an outfielder.

I think the Yankees and their followers are just looking for a place to dump Cano.
They notice the Dodgers are still trying to get their infield back together and it gives them a chance to take a chance.
Also they must've noticed that the Dodgers have some fine talent.

its not going to happen, although if cano was with joe torre and larry bowa again he would be a way better player, but hes to valuable to the yanks when he is on his game

DO NOT TRADE MATT KEMP!!! Your crazy to trade kemp, he belongs to the dodgers, what happens when you trade kemp, get cano and he struggles like he has been for the last 2 years. Not gona happen, colletti if you are reading this, look carefully, you have all your youth improving in your club right here! why "give" it away! if you trade matt kemp it will affect the other youth guys like ethier, loney, dewitt and martin, because they will have one piece missing to a puzzle, its a PUZZLE! dont loose the piece!

I think its going to take one hell of a deal to unload Kemp and I doubt they will get one. But if the Dodgers are able to resign Blake (as it looks like they will) then they don't need Cano. Dewitt can play second just fine, what the Dodgers need is a proven SS. And speaking of Dunn...I think that would actually be a decent acquisition for the Dodgers. He is cheaper than Manny and no worse in the outfield than him. The young guys on the team pretty much already hit around .300 so there is no real need to worry about Dunn's average being a detriment. What they need is a big power guy, the guy that can give them a lift with one swing of the bat.
And I agree about a retread pitching project. I think Pettite or the Big Unit would be perfect and relatively low cost (especially Johnson). Couple that with Dunn for power and Blake for stability and suddenly you got the money to sweeten the deal for Furcal with some money left over to spend on a new closer (Wood or Hoffman) or even another starter.

Does anyone watch sports??? DEFENCE wins championships in every sport!!! C.C. wants to be in L.A. Give him the money, sign Pettitte for peanuts because we wants to play for Torre. If we don't get Furcal back then Juan Pirrier needs to play because we need a leedoff with speed. History doesn't lie we'll get 63 SBs from him. If we get Furcal back trade one of our 9 million outfileders to get some DEFENCE aka pitching!!! Dunn is a waste of money, way pay millions for hundred+ strike outs. Ether way we need pitching and a shrotstop because Hu is NOT the answer... Go Lakers, I mean Dodgers!!!
Report any abuse or spam
Hey I know what defense does! If we get Furcal back then the stolen bases are taken care of, but its also proven that the Dodgers need that big bat. The Dodgers have this amazing ability to get on base and never score. They need a big bat! Sure with Dunn you get the strike outs but you also get 40 hrs 90+ rbi and 100+ walks. And I'm fairly sure that CC saying he wants to be in LA is a red herring to entice other clubs to pay more to get him away from the coast.
Don't get me wrong CC would be an amazing addition to the club and the Dodgers would be immensely stronger for it since really pitching is the key. But CC is expensive and if LA signs him and can't afford anyone else decent then there's no point. LA needs at least one starter (and they don't have to be amazing, Lowe was good and worked just fine but he was not CC quality and LA didn't really need a CC) they still need a Closer (or other relief pitcher if they are going with Broxton) and for sure **** (assuming we get Blake. If they don't then we need a big bat 3b and we can keep Pierre in the OF, but do you know any available big bat 3b's?). If they get no big bat then they are essentially the same team as last year before Manny no matter what pitchers they sign. And before Manny the Dodgers weren't a blip on the post season radar, but I think Manny is too pricey, hence again me on the Dunn wagon.
Which is weird because I'm not usually fond of players who only hit bombs, but I really think the Dodgers need a guy who hits a buttload of bombs. I hate to say it but the Dodgers offense is always pretty weak, they live off good pitching until they run into a team who is good at both (not even great) and they get trampled.
Look at it this way: Kent is gone so to replace his numbers they sign Blake, but if they lose Furcal then they really need a big bat, but where will he play?...the OF (hence again Dunn). The Dodgers have capable fielding SS within their system but no one can hit. Sadly Pierre I think will only get time if they somehow find more offensive prowess in the infield, but I don't know how unless they get Tex and unload Loney...but is that a good idea? Maybe, if they get the starting pitching for him. But LA (nor I) want to get rid of Loney so there goes that.
Now if Jones could learn to hit and Schmidt can get a bionic arm to pitch then most of these problems are solved... but that's SUPER doubtful.

WE NEED TO...
#1 Give up on Jones!!!
Try to void his contract or eat it up on a trade for middle relief or any prospects.
#2 Keep the core. Martin/Kemp/Bills/Ethier/Kershaw/Loney/Kuo/Brox and now Mcdonald and Elbert. We have control over these guys for a few more years and they wont empty the bank.
#3 Get CC.
At any cost! I'm sure we dont need to offer $140m. Its obvious the guy wants to be a Dodger! He is the ace we desperatly need. Billingsly is great but he is not Webb/Santana/Zambrano caliber yet. His bat will also help every 5th day.
#4 Bring back Manny!
With a realistic offer. The guy wanted to get out of a $20m a year option so how is he (and mentor Boras) going to look taking less? I say 3yrs tops. $25m first 2yrs and a $15m option for 3rd year. Take it or leave it!
I wish we could bring back Raffy but it looks like the Mccourts dont want to spend. Its understood cuz we have prospect depth at SS. I just saw De jesus in the AFL. He looks good but it might take another year to be ready. Bring back Itzuris or Berroa on a 1 yr deal. Bring back Blake. Bring back Nomar as a super utility infielder.
2009 Opening Day Lineup
1. Kemp
2. Ethier
3.Ramirez
4.Loney
5.Martin
6.Dewitt
7.Blake
8.Berroa/Itzuris
9.CC
opposing manager headache with the R/L combination

dodger_az, i like where your head's at! as much as it breaks my heart though, i don't think Nomar plans on coming back though -- period.
i also like think Cory Wade should be in that "hands off" core group. i love his stuff and his composure, (cough, except for nlcs game 4, cough) especially for a guy who seemingly skipped triple-A altogether. whether he should be the go-to-righty reliever is one thing, but i would definitely like to see him around until we know what we've got in that arm of his.

If you dont want Cano on an everyday basis you cant say he struggles at second. What he does for us isnt something that you see numbers wise what he does is something similar to what Jeter does for us. He plays phenominal defense great hitter with growing ablities. So what if he had a bad year that doesnt make a player bad some of the best players ever have had a bad year and come out and have the greatest year theyve ever had. From reports on Cano in D.R. hes ripping the ball and hopefully he brings that into the regular season if not its fine cause hes a great second half player. If Cano is traded the Yankees are crazy because Cano can carry a team and he has carried the Yankees from time to time not all the time but if they need he can come through. Lets Go Yankees!! Get CC or another quality pitcher and ill be happy we always lose cause of pitching and now with Moose gone we need help.

Right! I forgot about Wade. I seriously think we should give him a chance to close. The guy has excellent command and is not afraid to challenge anyone. Usually guys that are coming up try too hard to strike out people. He is not afraid to have them hit the ball. That shows me he can develop a closer mentality.
