Bucs after Loretta
As the Pirates look to rebuild their bench and infuse more veteran presence on the '09 club, it appears as if the club is targeting free agent infielder Mark Loretta as a possible addition. According to a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Loretta's agent Bob Garber has spoken to the Pirates concerning his client. The Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Phillies are also interested in Loretta, according to the newspaper.
Loretta, a 14-season veteran, has spent the last two seasons in Houston. He hit .280 with 38 RBIs in 101 games.
The pursuit of Loretta certainly makes sense for the Pirates, as there is no guarantee that any of their free agent infielders - Chris Gomez, Jason Michaels and Doug Mientkiewicz - will return next season. Loretta can play all four infield positions, so he would be an ideal candidate for that utilityman role. The fact that he can also play short could also be of consequence if the Pirates are to trade veteran Jack Wilson.

i know you weren't really talking to me, lol, but i haven't heard any rumors about Adam Laroche going to the Angles. i assume that they are already preparing for the departure of Mark Texiera, but they hold first base prospect Kendry Morales so highly, and have an almost proven guy in Rob Quinnlan. i haven't heard such rumors. do you know when / where they surfaced?

Why do the Pirates go after any free agents after all they are a second division club that alway's trades away their key players? In fact I think MLB should make teams like the Pirate owners have to put out a competitive team or else sell it. Grant it those teams don't have to be like the Yankees but at least they owe the tax payers for building them a new stadium. And most of all they owe the fans for putting up with sub mediocer teams for years on end. MLB needs to investigate any future owner('s) in order to make sure that they can financially compete with the other teams. I'M sure they could find some interest from the far East to buy some teams.

The way things are going for the Dodgers, Mark Loretta could fit right in. Especially if Furcal doesn't make it back.
But at the moment Ned Colletti still feels that he hasn't lost Furcal yet.
Of course Loretta is a far cry from a healthy Furcal, but on account of all the injures that Furcal has suffered over the past three years the Dodgers are reluctant to give him more than a two year contract, with incentives and Furcal feels he can do better, elsewhere.
