Braves close to signing Dave Ross
Looking to improve the production they received from their backup catchers last year, the Braves are close to signing Dave Ross to a two-year deal worth approximately $3.5 million. Ross confirmed the signing could come as early as Thursday.
"We're close to signing," said the 31-year-old catcher, who has hit .222 with 60 homers and a .435 slugging percentage in 431 career games.
Ross hasn't been able to match the 21-homer season he enjoyed with the Reds in 2006. But he certainly provides an upgrade for the Braves, who saw their backup catchers combine to hit .114 (13-for-114) with two homers this past season.

I wrote about this on my latest blog. Brilliant move by Wren. Miller is just garbage and Sammons is still too young.

Mark, any word on the yearly dollar figures? $1.75M per year, or different?

Yeah, I read the figures were about $3 million for 2 years. It's a really smart move to get him for two, b/c as I read the Braves were concerned about a weak back up catcher market after this year, so go ahead ink him for two, takes the pressure off of Clint to come into his own still down in the minors, the the deal is over, Clint can come up to be behind McCann, and then depending on how things go with other prospects on the way, hold him for a few years, then trade him off or what not.
And Tylercromer, Corky wasn't a loser, did you see that stache he had going? No total loser could grow a stache like that. But I will say this about Corky, he still is better def. than Brian McCann is today. That's why we kept him, never for his bat, but for his def. Clint was supposed to be a back up with a bat.
It was a broken system, compounded by the release of Bryan Pena, the switch hitting catcher who was also Escobar's best friend and personal translator for hard questions.
With Ross now back there, think we can now feel more confident about a "W" when B-Mac is taking his much much deserved days off.
