Yankees wary of bringing back Pettitte?
Andy Pettitte confirmed earlier this week to a Houston television station that he aims to pitch again next season, preferably for the Yankees. Yet that doesn't necessarily mean that he will.
Citing an unnamed source, Newsday reported Thursday that the Yankees would only consider re-signing Pettitte if he agreed to a one-year deal at less than the $16 million he has made in each of the past two seasons.
The Yankees can negotiate with Pettitte exclusively until Nov. 13, at which time the other 29 teams can begin to talk money with him. But according to the Newsday report, the Yankees don't plan on reaching out to Pettitte until they know whether or not Mike Mussina will pitch next season.

Smart move Yanks. Yanks should pursue Oliver Perez instead of re-signing Pettitte. First priority, of course, is CC &/or Burnett. Then Teixiera (& possibly Manny if it makes sense.) For sure, don't let Red Sox get Burnett or Teixiera.

I totally agree w/you Esurdo - do not waste valuable funds on Pettite - I believe he made between 16-17 mil for what? He did not show up and looked his age towards the end of the season. I would rather make a pitch for Brad Penny from the Dodgers- he got cut from them yesterday. He is a 2 time 16 game winner and is only 30 years old - you can probably get him for about 11-12 mil.

If you bring Pettitte back, it has to be performance based contract. Pettitte has gotten worse each year, and you don't want to risk too much money on a has been. I don't think he is worth bringing back though. A team like the Padres, Royals, or the like who needs cheap pitching may be a better place for Petitte.

Yanks can forget about CC. He loves going to the plate looking for that big hit. He's going to be strictly a National Leaguer for that reason.

I couldn't disagree more. Andy Pettitte is a man of impeccable character and a wonderful influence in the clubhouse. Most of all he has been a warrior for the Yankees for many years. They let him get away because they ignored him and he won 37 games in three years -- one in which he was injured most of the time. He has won fourteen postseason games versus 9 losses. He has one 215 regular season games versus only 127 losses. He is a LHP. If anyone deserves to be brought back for a year at least, it is Pettitte.

There are good arguments on both sides regarding Pettitte. True, he has been a proven winner, but that's where the problem lies....HAS BEEN. His effectiveness is declining every year and he is not the neutralizer for Boston that the Yanks need. Burnett, I believe, has a better success rate against the Red Sucks and would be money better spent @ $16 mil.
If he does decide to return, does Mussina have another quality year left in him? Prior to this past season, he like Andy, was also declining.
Peavy deal would be hard for Yanks considering desire to hold on to as much of the farm system as possible. Padres would want quality in return. And the performances of Hughes, Kennedy, and Cabrera have made them less attractive to other clubs.

I think it would be smart for the Yankees to sign Jon Garland . He is young and very talented. He would be a great addition.

Heynydawl: Maybe RedSox and Yanks could do a combo deal with Padres, who would you want us to trade away?

Whether Pettitte would be a good to bring back or not, I think the Yankees would probably have to bring him back. I just don't see really anything out there that is the least bit attractive, besides CC Sabathia, but that's just me. Don't even bring Burnett up. The last thing we need is another Pavano. If they're considering Burnett, they should just bring Pavano back, LOL. Who in the world would want Oliver Perez? I'd just go with Wang, Chamberlain, Pettitte, Moose and Hughes all over again if that was the case.
I do agree with the other poster. Bring back Pettitte on a performance based contract. He seriously needs a pay cut. Sorry, but it's the truth. $16 million, 1 year for what he did for the Yanks during the '08 season? Don't think so. I love the guy, but he didn't come through for the Yanks as much as he should have.

I was disappointed LAST year when the Yanks gave Pettitte 16 million. I mean they weren't signing Doc Halliday, you know!! Pettitte should have been had for 10-12 mill then and should be had for less now. And only if they have a spot open. Starting with Wang and Joba; hopefully adding Sabathia or Burnett; then most probably Hughes. There also is Aceves who liked decent in those five starts. Mussina should be retired and Pettitte should be too but...I say if they sign Sabathia and any other pitcher than say goodbye to Andy with a real heart felt thank you for the inspirational pitching he has done over the past 12 years or so. I hate to say this but it is quite possible that at this stage in their careers it might be a better investment to sign Pavano to an incentive laden contract than to resign Andy...

I believe Pettitte should come back 1 more year. He has always been there for us and has proven time and again to be the "workhorse". Management screwed him once before, I say not again.

Why bring Pettitte back? he can't not pitch anymore . He is overated. They should not spent a penney on him, why waste their money .Give the spot to a young guy it can't be worse. I am a Yankee fans for over 55 yrs always will be, please do not sign him. They don't have to be loyal to him, he was not when he signed with Houston. Paul
