What's taking Moyer so long?

Jamie Moyer wants to return, and the Phillies want him back, so what's taking so long? At this point, it appears the two sides can't coordinate schedules. One person familiar with the team's thinking believes it's a matter of time for an announcement, and the 46-year-old may sign a multiyear deal. -- Ken Mandel

Signing Moyer is a good choice he performed like a #2 guy and he is really a #4 at this point in his career. Plus he instills a lot of education and confidence in the younger pitchers as well as the team. I wonder if the Phil's will seriously explore a trade for another #2 type pitcher. They could dangle, Kendrick, Eaton and Carasco or Happ to many teams. They would get 2 young pitchers with promise and another that needs a change of scenery. They should even think about trading Meyers, he is at his highest worth right now, and may not want to stay in Philly after next year. He could be traded for another strong pitcher. I just feel the Phil's are in a spot where they can make some good moves that will make a very good team GREAT and not just for next year, but for at least 3-5 years.

The Phils will resign Moyer without a doubt. I think they would like to sign him to a 2 year deal and then, possibly keep him on as a pitching coach or an assistant. He has worked with Hamels and Myers over the past 2 years and they believe the relationship he has with all of the pitchers will be a great help.

I believe Moyer has been a great teacher for those willing to listen. I don't believe that is one of them. I think they could get good value for Meyers and develop Happ into a strong #2 or better.

DO NOT ... REPEAT DO NOT LET GO OF HAPP. I don't see a down side with Kendrick and especially Eaton. Eaton is a waster and a bust. Stay with Carasco as well.

I like Russ Springer from the Cards ... He will be a good addition. Can not have too many lefites.

Stay with your farm and start bringing them up to see who comes thru. You have a good nucleus to allow some rookies to enter the fold. Look also in the farm for a temporary 2nd baseman. Do not relay on Bruntlett.

You will be pleasantly pleased with Dobbs at first. He has the best swing on the club. That's right better than Utley. His swing is classic.

Try to do an even swap for Meyers. A younger arm would be nice with a lot of potential.

I would have to disagree - pitchers often show their best work in their late 20's to their late 30's due to maturity and that is where Myers is.

Bruntlett is possible tradebait because he will not get more time than platooning for Burrell in Philly, so he may be better off elsewhere. This is one of the reasons the Golson deal was so horrible.

Coste might also be on the block, considering Marson's potential.

Jamie is a class act that leads on and off the field. He very involved with the community and donates alot of time and money to his charities.Signing him would be a win-win situation. The big issue the Phillies have is Eatons 8.5 Million owed next year.Myers has more value at this point as a closer than a starter. The problem is that their are more closers available this offseason than their is a need.Myers is due to make 12 million in 2009 and becomes a free agent in 2010.I believe the more young pitchers you stock pile now via trade the better.Myers should have a big year next year since it is a contract year.Locking up Hamels now is key.Where would we be without him in the playoffs? Happ.Kendrick,Eaton and Carrasco can battle for the 5th spot. The Phillies need help as a quick fix at 2B and i feel Mark Loretta is our best bet as a 300 hitter and has pop!If we can get Pat back it would be great. If not we've got to replace his numbers more importantly with Chase missing time to start 2009.I would love to see Lou Marson on the roster in 2009 and Jason Donald in 2010.That would make Rollins expendable as he's already unhappy with his current contract.Plus Myers and eatons money will be gone !Thats 27.5 mil.

The Phils need to:
1) Sign Moyer..one or two years. Doesn't matter.
2) To replace Utley until June, they need to sign or trade for someone who can hit 3rd in the lineup, and then possibly 5th when Utley returns....maybe say Jermaine Dye. The Chisox are going young and Dye could be had for perhaps Marson( although his defense is suspect) or Donald and a young pitcher( Carrasco, Happ, Carpenter?).
3) Dobbs could hit 3rd against righties and play either 3rd or left.
4) The bottom of the order without Utley is scary. Feliz, Ruiz and Bruntlett/Donald. They need to sign or trade for a 2B with a little pop who could possibly pinch hit after Utley comes back.
5) Another RH hitter off the bench( Jason Michaels?)
6) Springer is a right hander by the way...somone mentioned that he is a lefty.

Why is a lineup of this....
1.Rollins
2.Werth

Why is a lineup of this...
1. Rollins
2. Victorino
3. Werth
4. Howard
5.Mayberry Jr,
6. Feliz
7. Bruntlett
8. Marson/Ruiz
9. Pitcher

...so wrong?

You have speed at the top of the lineup, you protect howard before and after with right handed batters and a great defensive player in (maybe not as great as Utley) and speed at the bottom of the ineup with Bruntlett. And either Ruiz or Marson whether you want defense or offense. That free's up so much more space for pitching to pull the team together.

Not sure I totally understand this urgency with signing Moyer. There are a few quality arms out there like Burnett that should be considered. I do agree that this J A Happ might be worth looking at seriously during spring training. I was impressed by what I saw of him in limited action. Myers is always a question mark and he might be something to deal here. Now with the Utley situation, I think that serious talks should occur with Burell to maintain some stability in that lineup. Looks like a priority should be placed on picking up the slack till he Utley returns. I really want to see Marson this year. And something tells me, not exactally what, that Feliz may have a better year at the bat if his lower back is feeling better. I think strongly that the key to this lineup (with or without Utley) is a quality bat hitting sixth. This was a good team that won the world series but I still say that a bit of proper tinkering can turn them into an even better team. I think Ruben has his work cut out!

phillies need a #3 starter (i like hamels, myers 1-2 and blanton, moyer 4-5. i would bring burrell back ( a. hes one of the few players who loves it here, and b. we cant find a power right handed bat at a lesser price.) i would also like to find another decent arm for the pen. next year i would like to lock up hamels for 7 years and the year after, howard for 7 years.

Give Moyer an offer for 1yr + option and let him take it or leave it.

Amaro will most likely let the young players compete and evaluate them in spring training. That is what ST is for. Kendrick, Carasco, Happ and Marson will either earn a spot or take advantage of an injury later. We Boo'd Eaton so bad that last rain delay game he pitched at the Bank and that should have been enough to eat 8.5M an not consider.

I think the Phillies are going to offer Burrell arb. before Dec 1 deadline and let him accept for a 1yr deal or take the possible picks. I don't think another team will give up picks anyway. So, I believe Burrell is back regardless. Mayberry is insurance or mid-season call up.

I think most of what the Phillies need should be in the minors. I cannot see much out there in the open market
thats not either "overpriced" or a risk. The Phillies seem to know that building from within works best, with some risk taking on signing a few free agents..They have been burnt before as in Freddy Garcia...10 million, and Gavin Floyd! what a deal huh...lets not do that AGAIN...KEEP ALL our Talent in the minors..and work them into the club..without panic..Sign Pat the bat..KEEP Happ, Kendrick, Carasco...
Its a "TEAM" remember...you do not win the world series because you sign a guy like Santana...ask the mets...ha ha

Does anyone get it ? THIS is the team that won it..Don't shuffle players like chess pieces.. Everyone contributed in their own way.. doing their own thing at their own time..Picking up pieces when they needed to be picked up..To cast judgement on whether they should stay or go is ludicrous..It is so easy to play Monday morning General Manager and criticize..Jim Thome once said that " Baseball is not a race, but a Marathon"....pacing and patience is important..perhaps management will do just that..I'm very proud of this team and their accomplishments, and I'd like to see 90% of its' nucleus return..

The Phillies should not trade Happ, Carasco, Donald and Marson. All young players with tremendous potential All are part of the future of the Phillies

Moyer needs to stay here. It doesnt matter how old he is, he won 16 games this year. he also lives around here. i dont see him with any other team. Eaton needs to leave Philly immediately. Burrell i think has seen the last of Citizens Bank Park. i think Moyer should be signed to a one or two year deal. i wouldnt be surprised if the Phils sign Rocco Baldelli. Also, i think Happ should start out in the bullpen before moving to the starting rotation. he pitched good, but still is young.

Moyer will sign a 2 year deal within the next 2 weeks. Who cares for how much. It's not my money. But it's a done deal. I saw alot of Iron Pigs games this year and believe me there is nothing there. Any position help is going to need to come from the outside. They brought Mayberry in hoping he will be the left fielder next year and Burrell is gone. Other than Burrell what other change do you want make on your starting 8 anyway? Bruntlett can fill in for Utley for a month or so if need be. It's all about getting better starting pitching. I saw alot of Happ last summer. Quiet kid, hard worker. Usually out early before games doing his work. Not sure how tough he is mentally though. When he gets knocked around he tends to get down on himself. Kind of guy Moyer can work wonders with because Happ is very coachable. Myers and Kendrick are both big question marks for me. Myers is a head job who won't listen to anybody. And Kendrick is another guy who has mental toughness issues.

What am I missing here? Make Rollins expendable? Why would we ever see Dobbs at first? Coste and Bruntlett as "trade bait"? For what? What would Bruntlett and Coste bring back? (For the record I like both players.) As someone mentioned, we're not trying to make moves to put us over the top...we're already there. Some tinkering here, an arm there...and we're still the team to beat. Nothing's guaranteed, that's for sure, except that if we break what ain't broke we might be in for another loooong wait.
