Uribe on Giants' wish list?

The Chicago Tribune recently reported that free-agent infielder Juan Uribe might have piqued the Giants' interest, and club insiders did not deny this. Uribe, 29, hit only .247 with seven home runs and 40 RBI in 110 games last season for the Chicago White Sox, but he hit 20 or more homers in three of the previous four seasons. He can play second base, shortstop and third, demonstrating the kind of versatility the Giants tend to seek. Uribe's 2008 salary was "only" $4.5 million, so money probably wouldn't be an issue. If the Giants were to sign Uribe, a right-handed batter, they might decline to pursue the popular Rich Aurilia, another free-agent infielder who has spent 10 of his 13 years with San Francisco -- unless they anointed Uribe the starter at third base, which is one of the club's most gaping holes.

This is not the news Giants fans are wanting to hear.Uribe and Phelps are not going to be what we need. Aurilla will get away if you wait to long. Remember the Mays, McCovey, and Bonds. We need a big time Hitter. Spend the money or lose the fans. It been 4 years now. Go free agents, and do not give up our pitchers. That why everybody wants them. We need to make a move now before the Dodgers get everyone.

Thank you finally someone who understands that the free agency pool is so deep we dont have to trade our young pitchers and uribe come on with orlando hudson available he batted .283 just as a lead off hitter and he can play both 2B and SS we need a 3B yes so go get Hank Blalock or Raul Vazquez. Blalock can play both 3B and 1B dont waste money on bench players go get MANNY or Teixera or Orlando Cabrera,Jerry Hairston jr.,Raul Ibanez,Bobby Abreu,Garrett Anderson those guys produce right away not in 5yrs or maybe never and we need pitching help for Lincecum and Cain go get Sabathia,AJ Burnette,Ben Sheets,Barolo Colon,Derek Lowe,John Smoltz hell even Smoltz is better at 41 than anyone we have in the bullpen as far as relief pitching goes theres Francisco Rodriguez,Trevor Hoffman,J.Cruz,andJ.Beimel all these guys are free agents proof we dont have to get rid of our young pitchers if the Giants want to trade a player trade Zito or Dave Roberts or all of our bullpen you lose nothing trading any of them "GET SMART" Giant owners you Multi-Billionars go spend the MONEY 26 WS Championships says it worked for the NY Yankees like the guy before me said spend the MONEY win the fans YOU WILL MAKE YOUR MONEY BACK IF YOU SPEND THE MONEY the farm system does not work the last 2 WS appearances we made were cause of FREE AGENTS we brought in SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY

NO. We have Kevin Frandsen who can produce similar numbers to Uribe, and at a hell of a lot less expense. Drop some money on Tex or Hud, but don't get some D-class chip from the sox.

I don't Giant fans should panic. I do feel like they should be realistic about a competative team salary. I believe they need to be around 110 million. Sure Tampa did it for way less but they have a ligimate farm system and we don't, not yet anyway and we can't efford to give away any of our future. Furcal would be a great pick up and he has pop and makes things happen. I think we could get him for a reasonable amount. I like Sandoval @ third, but we still need pop. I think we should really try to get Teixera! Pat Burrell would be an excellent pick-up, gold glove, pop and local guy! I'd put alot of emphesis on set-up pitchers and I think we'd be set.

I think signing Uribe would be a terrible idea. The last thing the Giants need on the team is another guy to hit under .250 with 7-8 homers and 40 RBI for an entire year. I would rather see Aurilia back in a Giants uniform before seeing Uribe for 3B or utility or whatever we sign him for. Nothing good could possibly come from signing Uribe, it would just be another thing for us fans to groan about next year. We should try to trade Sanchez and maybe one of our many 1B youngsters (Ishikawa, Bowker, Ortmeier) for Garret Atkins if we want a real 3B. I would be very sad to see Sanchez go, but realistically he is probably the only option we have to trade away as far as starting pitchers without absolutely dismantling our rotation.

Everyone just needs to relax and let the organization continue on the path they are on. We have plenty of young talent, especially at the low class A level--that if allowed to mature properly, will produce at least one world champion team. I think the recent trend of young talented players to impact the game both for the Giants and for other, even more succesful teams, is unmistakable. For instance, I honestly believe that Pablo Sandoval could become the next Tony Gwinn, if allowed to grow and mature properly. He has the best pure swing that I have seen in a Giants uniform since Will Clark, except he switch hits and has a better opposite field approach. I have heard some sickening rumors that the Giants would consider trading him for a proven numbers guy on offense. This is exactly the kind of thinking that got us where we have been over the last 3 years. Also, we have to remember that the Giants are still riding out the realities of creating a privately financed statium. They need steady, reliable success that the fans can get excited about over time--think Oakland A's sans the impulsiveness to trade away all potential prospects (which most fans abhor). When Oakland actually kept players around, as with the Rays of this year, fans go nuts to feel like they are part of an actual growing process, they feel ownership in the maturation process of the club. Contrarily, if we just go out and try and buy some bats--sacrificing the ability to pay our budding young talent, we will continue with the same woes the team has faced since '89--a significant lack of pitching and defence--especially young pitching and young defence with agressive hitting as a biproduct of a carefully managed farm system and international scouting operation. The Dodgers have beat us in this department since '89 and luckily, now, they have grown impatient and gone the way of trying to buy "numbers guys." Honestly people, you can't buy a team fans feel good about--you scout it, you grow it and you supplement it with crafty off-season moves and timely investments. I do agree we need to shell out, whatever we can, to bring in a Matt Williams caliber 3rd baseman who can actually fill that gaping hole in the infield, if it turns out that Sandoval will play first primarily.

donahueshalbyeye you must be young or new to the Giants as a fan and specator because you obvisiously dont remember our 89' and 02' teams they were bought and paid for through free agency as proof heres some names just to remind you Kevin Mitchell,Brett Butler,Rick Ruschel,Don Robinson, kirk Manwaring all starters in 89' bought and paid for in FREE AGENCY except for Robinson who was a RP and the teams best pinch hitter the result a trip to the WORLD SERIES. In 02' we had Barry Bonds,Omar Vizquel,Jeff Kent,Benito Santiago,Shaun Dunston,Eric Davis,David Bell,Reggie Sanders,Kenny Lofton,J.T. Snow 7 out of 8 position players started all bought through FREE AGENCY the result another trip to the WORLD SERIES. 20 yrs and only 2 of the years did we go out and spend money on FREE AGENTS and what happen 2 WORLD SERIES TRIPS so if Giants owners listen to you and wait on the farm system which hasn't produced since 1954 which gave us WILLIE MAYS and there will never be another WILLIE we will win a world series in about NEVERRR today baseball championships are won through FREE AGENCY I DEFER BACK TO THE YANKEES who won all there recent titles through FREE AGENCY also look at BOSTON and the PHILLIES i.e. Brad Lidge.I wish the game of baseball and its championships were won through the farm systems but thats a thing of the past. FREE AGENCY is how WORLD SERIES are won today just check the record books and before you mention the MARLINS you better check there roster cause it was full of FREE AGENTS dont mention Tampa Bay they lost. just do the research you'll then see i'm right sorry it's just the facts. Please smarten up Giants owners get off your wallets your MULTI-BILLIONERS for heavens sake spend about 300 or 400 million and not only will you win a WORLD SERIES but you'll double the money you spent with profit payback. with big name FREE AGENTS and not just 2 or 3 FREE AGENTS but 7 or 8 big name FREE AGENTS we have the money and we can sign these players.Sign 2 of these 5 starting pitchers Sabathia,Burnette,Lowe,Sheets or Colon as well as 1 of these closers F-Rod,Hoffman or Smoltz we also need a reliever getting either J.Cruz or J.Beimel.As far as hitters go we should sign 1B Teixera,2B Orlando Hudson,SS Jerry Hairston jr.,and OF Raul Ibanez and Bobby Abreu we sign these guys WE RIVAL ANY TEAM PAST OR PRESENT and the payroll wouldnt be any higher than that of the Yankees,Red Sox,Cubs and for those who read this and think we cant afford these guys check the financial records of our owners the Giants have some of the richest owners in baseball so yes we can afford it.It's just a question of wether or not our owners are smart enough to figure this out or if they really care about not only the Giants but the fans and the city if they do care or are smart enough then they'll sign the above mention players other wise why did they buy the team unless they just like to tell there friends they own a MLB team.I know this team inside and out. Ive been watching them for over 30 yrs and I LOVE THE GIANTS I ALWAYS WILL Thanks for Reading. Roger Q.

The Giants dont need to waste anymore money on Uribe we all ready wasted some money on Phelps and Miller.
Miller is injured all the time and Phelps is just not good.
What we need is Pat Burell or Mark Teixera and some bullpen and we can have a good season.
It would be cool to sign cc but we really dont need any starters we have Lincecum,Cain,Lowry,Sanchez, and Correia
but Cain mite get traded that would be a mistake. We have a young power bat in the making sandoval we need to sign him to a long term deal.We have a soild bullpen with Hinshaw,Romo,Valdez, and Wilson but we need to get taschner out he sucked.
We should re-sign Aurila he is a fan fav since the 02' WS.

Are the Giants really interested in another right handed batter who has 20-homer power (in friendlier parks)? So factoring the Canadian conversion rate, are we to be excited about the possibility of Uribe hitting 12~14 home runs at AT&T? I'm not...
Re-sign Richie (Aurilia) and hunt for left-handed power (or switch in the case of Texeira). The presence of a formidable lefty will allow our righties to see more fastballs (a bonus for hitters like Rowand and Aurilia).
I'm not opposed to Uribe as a person, but Richie has a great rapport with the fans and knows what it means to be a Giant. His work ethic and love of the game (not to mention his versatility defensively) will go a long way in helping our young players mature at this level. He man no longer be the Rich of 2002, but without Bonds in the lineup, not many people would be... Uribe certainly won't.
Re-sign Rich and let a great Giant finish his career as a Giant!

RLQ, that's one of those ideas that is only good if it works, but chances are it will not. The Tigers tried the same thing last year, and fell flat on their face. First of all, SF is not a championship team, so chances are, big names will not want to sign with them unless we overpay- which means a WS ring would be now or never. And besides, your comparisons to the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are pretty terrible. The Phils won the WS with the help of Hamels, Rollins, Utley, Howard and Victorino. In fact, Lidge and Blanton were perhaps their biggest signings- otherwise, they just had a really good team. The Red Sox paid for a lot of their players, but Papelbon, Pedroia, Youkilis, Ellsbury and even Jed Lowry all came from within. The Yankees are the highest paid team in baseball, but wound up in third. You said not to mention the Rays, but why? They made it to the WS, when the big spenders you mentioned did not.

And Harold, Phelps isn't look at as an "answer." He was a cheap addition with only something to prove and little downside. Look at Jorge Cantu on the Marlins- he was an NRI, and he developed into almost a 30 HR 100 RBI guy. Just like when we picked up Williamson last year- he was NOT the Giant's idea of filling our bullpen needs, but as an experiment. It didn't work out and do you hear about him anymore??

As for Uribe, he would be a terrible addition. Even if his power numbers magically transfered to AT&T, he batted less than .250 the last three years. We do NEED some bench/ utility players, but Uribe shouldn't be the guy!! Can the Giants PLEASE fill their empty promise of power at third (or at least move Sandoval to third and pick up a first baseman).

Here is my take on it all. Try to keep the rotation meaning cain should not be up for grabs. I don't think Zito is going anywhere. Sandoval needs to be signed in a long term contract cuz he has a ton of potential to be a tremendous hitter. I do agree with basically everyone that we need a solid 3B. I think we have what we need other than that. Around the horn unnamed 3B Burriss SS Frandsen 2B and many options at first. Our outfield is fine and we are prolly gaining a starting pitcher with lowry this season. I am not saying we are going to the series this year but the team made it quite clear that we are going to build a team so be patient and enjoy the ride even if it takes some time. Dont be fair weather fans ride it out learn the team and the young players and love the ride

You guys are killing me! Give up the Teixera pipe dream. If they sign Teix that would mean they will have 2 players that account for half their payroll. Yes thanks to Zito. I for one am tired of one or two great players and bunch of stiffs to surround them. They finally look like they have a good hitter in Sandoval and Angel Villenueva a few years away. Posey looking like a starter in 2010. Why block these guys from playing by signing Teix to a 6 or 7 year deal. Dont get me wrong he is great and if Zito wasnt hear I would be all for it. Sign Dunn (who will be a bargain compared to others) and sign Burrell who will probably take a 2 or 3 year deal which wont block Villenueva. Trade Winn, Sanchez for some bullpen help, 2b and some young prospects. They wont win next year, but in 2010 this is what you have.....
RF F. Lewis
SS Burress
3B Sandoval
LF Dunn
1B Burrell
CF Rowand
C Posey
2B Noonan/Velez/or Trade/Free Agent
This way the payroll is in line and you didnt trade any of your arms. Staff in 2010 is Linecum, Cain, Bumgardner, Zito and Alderson. With that staff this team could contend. So dont panic and be patient. Let it happen.

Just a couple of your own quotes here...

"you must be young or new to the Giants as a fan and specator because you obvisiously dont remember our 89' and 02' teams they were bought and paid for through free agency"

"FREE AGENCY is how WORLD SERIES are won today just check the record books and before you mention the MARLINS you better check there roster cause it was full of FREE AGENTS dont mention Tampa Bay they lost."

"dont mention Tampa Bay they lost." ???

Did we win in 89' and 02'??? We ended up paying a bunch of money...only to lose.

I like this group of kids we've got right now. The only thing I think we're missing is a bat at one of the corners. 1st or 3rd...doesn't matter, cause Pablo can play either one.

The Giants shopping list in order how they should do things
1. get sabathia
2. look into getting manny on a three year deal but that is if we can trade an outfielder
3. trade Rowand or Winn with Sanchez or Frandsen and Roberts for a power hitter
4. sign some young players or at least look into sigining players like Cuban third baseman Dayan Viciedo 19yrs old, Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa 22 yrs old
5. get relief help like cordero, Beimel, eyre. or maybe another closer cause i think wilsons ERA 4.62 might go up even more if he does not adjust to the MLB.
6. GIANTS dont need Burrell or Dunn strikeout kings of the MLB. The Giants don't need Texeira because they have Angel Villalona 18 yrs who is supposed to be the next Pujols.

Winn is a better player than Rowand look up the stats and Rowand is an overpaid player who needs to be dumped. He might be good deffensively but hitting wise avg .271 and Winn avg .306. Rowand not very good power wise Rowand 13 HRs and Winn 10 HRs not a big difference. except the 11-12 million to Rowand and Winn 8.25 million. 3-4 million more for the same player. Rowand is good enough to get something in a trade. TRADE ROWAND

i just have to laugh at most of these suggestions.
I mean each "projected" line up has two or three big name free agents which isnt going to happen. People we as giants fans need to be realistic and signing people like manny and dunn and burrell isnt realistic at all. how do any of those players fit the future with how young the team is?

If your going to mention prospects in our system at least know there names villanueva? no its villalona and if hes so good how come in two years with the organization he hasnt made it out of the low class A ball. He has potential but he has huge holes in his swing and strikes out way to much and hes not even facing big league pitching.

As for Frandsen and Lowry they are both coming back from injury and nothing is for sure who knows what we will get from those two. that being said they are two of my favortie 3 giants and i hope the best for them.

I think an ideal and realistic free agent is orlando hudson he is a great spark and great leader wherever he goes. if they where to sign him they could move frandsen to 3rd and we would have a good young and all around infield.

Finally im not to convinced with pablo yet yes he had a great second half and was one of out better bats. but we have seen this before the name lance niekro mean anything to anybody? he had a great second half a few years back and was penciled in to start at first the next season and was a bigger bust then ryan leaf

No trades...Keep the kids and let them mature and keep Aurilla as utility guy/leader..add thru free agents if possible..one big bat and one strong reliever...and as a long shot add CC Sabathia.

Adding Sabathia... he might give them a "home discount" since he has stated he wants to play in California and he is a Bay Area guy with many family members living in the Bay Area.... it would make an already strong starting pitching staff a very strong pitching staff.

Summary:
Go with strong pitching and defense and add 1 big bat and a solid reliever.

rf Winn

ss Burriss

lf Lewis

1b/3b free agent (Teixeria?)

3b/1b Sandoval

c Molina

2b Frandsen

relievers: Hinshaw,Valez,Yabu,Taschner (add more via FA)

Some backups/spot starters/PH/PR to keep: Aurillia,Schierholtz,Bowker,Posey,Phelps,Velez,Roberts (add some depth via FA)

They would have a very strong pitching staff and solid defense. Bats would be the biggest question mark but the kids would be given a chance to build their confidence with daily playing.
With that starting pitching there would be less pressure on the young bats to produce right away but hopefully as the year goes on they would get better.

some of your projections and wants are funny.
we arent gonna get Teixera he wants a playoff team and money guess what we arent a playoff team.
Pat Burrell is a good player but where we gonna put him we have Winn,Rowand, and Lewis and Schierholtz is on the waiting list.
cc not gonna happen we dont need a starter we have
Zito,Lincecum,Lowry,Sanchez,and Cain
Furcal is gonna be a waste of money he was injurd all last year and came back and sucked in the playoffs and we have Burriss.
Olando Hudson would be cool unlvrebel775 but we have Burriss and Velez and Ocha.
villalona is to young he needs maybe a year and comeup in 2010.
we need to work on our bullpen.we have
Hinshaw,Yabu,Romo,Valdez,Taschner, and Wilson we need one or two more rp.we could pick a pitcher like
Trever Miller,Jermey Affeldt,Juan Cruz ,or go to the minor league system.
get Aurilla back.

So I just read that we now have edgar renteria. . . that is great. However, I thought we were going to build a team over years not try a farm team for one year and finish fourth and then get desperate. Affeldt my be a good add not sure yet and yes Renteria was fairly cheep but i feel that burriss was just as good (with a little off season work) and a whole hell of a lot cheaper. We need Aurilia! He is good difensivly and seems to come through in the clutch. Obviously Visquel is not coming back unless as a coach. Anyway my point is that i feel we are losing our focus. I don't mind a losing team because last year was entertaining and i feel fans liked it because of our new superstar Tim Lincecum. So I think keep the farm idea and let it culminate for a few years until we have raised a winning team
