The latest on "The Chief"
A week after becoming a free agent, former Nationals closer Chad Cordero is drawing interest from several Major League clubs.
According to a baseball source, the Angels, Mets, Rangers and Tigers are interested and each team has asked to look at Cordero's medical records.
Cordero missed most of the 2008 season because of a labrum tear in his right shoulder. He had surgery on July 8 and is expected to be ready for Spring Training. The right-hander visited Dr. Lewis Yocum for a checkup last week and is expected to start throwing in a week.
Cordero's first choice would be to sign with the Angels because he is from Anaheim and grew up an Angels fan. Cordero also wouldn't mind having a reunion with Mets general manager Omar Minaya, who drafted him in the first round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft when he was with the Expos.
According to the source, the Nationals are not in the mix even though Cordero said last week he wouldn't rule out going back to Washington.

That sounds good but to good to be true if the Angels do sign him it should be a 1 year deal with a club option for2010 because chad has suffered some injuries the last couple of years, but if he is like he was in 05 it could work out well

I think there are a few things to be leery of when considering Cordero coming to the Mets.
First and probably most obvious is the health of his arm. We need to make sure that not only will he be ready to go for the start of the season, but that he will be 100% at the start of the season. Because as we all know, the health of our relief pitchers may have cost us a few games last year.
Second thing to think about - how will Cordero react to pitching in NY? Can he handle the media? Will he be able to handle the pressure of closing for the Mets in a new stadium with the fans emotions boiling over from two consecutive choke jobs?
I'm not sure that he's a big time pitcher...he has had some success with Nationals, but that’s the Nationals. He had no pressure...at all.
We need a big time pitcher who can come in and slam the door. Forget Cordero....bring in K Rod
