Royals have Cubs targets set in Teahen talks

Kansas City "is focused" on Cubs left-hander Sean Marshall and infielder Mike Fontenot while discussing a possible trade for outfielder Mark Teahen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

At 26, Marshall is a young arm with loads of promise. He compiled a 3.86 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings in 2008, splitting time as a starter and a reliever. Fontenot, who could start at second base for the Royals, was a much better all-around hitter than Teahen last season despite not playing every day.

For the Cubs, Marshall and Fontenot could potentially make big leaps in the next couple seasons, but they are somewhat expendable. By re-signing Ryan Dempster, the club is set with four-fifths of its rotation, leaving Jason Marquis and Marshall to battle it out for the fifth spot. Though Marshall has more upside, trading either to bring in offensive talent wouldn't be a bad idea. It's just a matter of whether or not Teahen is enough talent.

The left-handed Fontenot hit .306 last season as a reserve, including .360 after the All-Star break. Lou Piniella has expressed an interest in left-handed bats, but the club could get by with right-handed Ronny Cedeno taking over as the primary backup middle infielder.

All I can say to this trade is.....HELL NO. Fontenot > Teahen. Teahen sounds more like a trade you would make during the trading deadline, not an offseason move. If they really want to have Fukudome and Johnson plattoon in center, move DeRosa to right and have Fontenot play 2nd. He's capable of playing everyday and giving you an .280 - .290 batting average, 10-15 homers and great defense. If they trade Fontenot, I'd be one upset die-hard Cubs fan

i agree completley adn not that i want this but fukudome will bat better than .255 so teahan isnt much of an upgrade especially becasue of fukudomes defense. i say platoon fukudome and reed johnson in center find an actual right field offensive upgrade like raul ibanez or stick derosa in right and fotenot at 2nd
go cubbs!

I agree, too. Not a good deal. I frankly don't see one encouraging statistic on Mark Teahen's stat sheet over the last four years. I'd object to almost any deal in which he's the main piece we receive, especially if that deal involved more than one Cub being sent back, and even more so if that Cub were Marshall, Fontenot, or any other of a handful of guys (Cedeno, Hoffpauir, and Kevin Hart, for starters) who I believe to be better players than Teahen for 2009.

I agree with everyone who has commented so far. Surely the Royals must be joking. This Teahen guy isn't even worth Fontenot!!! I mean, 300 Ks between him and Soriano?? 75 DPs between he and Lee??? If we can't add Ibanez or Abreu, lets just go with DeRo in RF and Fontenot at 2B!! After letting Woody walk, if Hendry makes this trade I say fire him!!

If we can't sign any better free agents than Teahen, lets just go with what we got, sign Woody back and have the best BP in baseball!! Come on Hendry and K.C., GET REAL!!!

I don't see why the Cubs would want Teahen. He was solid but not spectacular. He only hit .255 with decent power numbers. He didn't drive in many runs so I think he would be more of a bottom of the order guy. I say take your chances with Fukudome again. It was only his first year in the MLB. I know he was a star for a long time in Japan but he also needs to transition to American baseball. He will probably do a lot better this season.

Trading Marshall or Fontenot for Teahan is a step backwards. This is a typical Cubs move though. Right at the brink of greatness so lets add a questionable player with 47 career homeruns to be our left-handed power bat. Teahans numbers may improve playing in Wrigley everyday but so did Jacque Jones' his first year as a Cub. Hendry you just need to go get Ibanez and trade for Peavy.

This would be a bone headed move! Fontenot and Marshall are way better than Teahan. If we are trading anyone, it better be Cedeno. Fontenot is better than Cedeno. Marshall should be pitching over Marquis, so i trade Cedeno and Marquis. Marshall and Fontenot are begining to come into their own and trading them would cause me to lose respect for Jim Hendry. DON'T DO IT JIM!!!

This will be the worst trade the Cubs made, since they traded Lou Brock. Wake up! Jim Hendry.

As a Braves fan I hope this goes through. Despite that my stupid trade radar is off the charts right now. If I was a Cubs fan I would not be pleased at all.

CUBS WATCH OUT!!!!! THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES ARE THE NEXT RAYS FOR NEXT YEAR WATCH OUT CUBS FANS WHO WILL BE SURPRISED!!!!!!!

what kind of protection did Teahen have in the Royals lineup? As supposed to the players your saying are better than him hun nobody , come on guys remember Damon (World Series MVP) after being traded . What's that Jermaine Dye (World Series MVP) after being traded also, Humm pattern here huh????? Carlos Betran if the Mets could get there????? Great talent has came through the Royals system only to blossum some where else, And Teahen is a true professional.

Not trying to insult Teahen. I am sure he is a good player. However, Fontenot hit for a higher average and came close to him in HRs and RBIs while playing part-time. He has hit the cover off the ball whenever given a chance. Marshall has an awesome curveball and if he learns to spot his other pitches better, could be a 15-18 game winner.

We have other options in house and need Fontenot and Marshall. Especially Fontenot.

HELL NO is absolutely right! I don't think the Cubs should be going after Teahen at all. Right idea. Right division. Wrong team and player. With Zumaya's 2009 status up in the air the Tigers are in dire need of relief pitching. That is why I propose a trade of RP Chad Gaudin for OF Marcus Thames. Similar basic idea except that Thames guarantees more power while Teahen only has the potential to hit for a bit higher of an average. Plus we wouldn't have to give up nearly as much to get him. Thames can also play both corner OF positions as well as both corner IF positions. This gives us a back up at first if Hoffpauir is given the starting job in RF. Not to mention a veteran in the OF if that doesn't work out. Yes I realize he's not a lefty, but Hoffpauir is and upgrading him to a full time role does the same trick if it is effective. Getting Thames gives us options. And I'm also in the boat that we trade Fukudome in a three team deal for Peavy and sign free agents CL Kerry Wood and OF Garret Anderson in CF (Range factor is pretty much the same as Fukudome's). But even though I think the plan better then any floating around, I feel pretty lonely in a boat all by my lonesome.

I trust in Jim Hendry not to make such a stupid descision like trading Mike Fontenot , I understand Jim considering trading Sean Marshall but if they were to trade Mike it would be a huge mistake.

First of all, Teahen is not that bad of an acquisition. He hit .280 and .290 before last season. But I believe the price of Fontenot and Marshall is too high. Now for some more reality. Woody is gone. He has earned a big long-term contract. The Cubs don't have the money for him. Next the Peavy trade is dead! Please see the reason for Woody above. Fukudome will be better next year. It is hard to move to a new country. It is hard to start a new job. Fukudome has had a year (especially this off-season) to get acclimated to the US. He'll be fine in time. Next, rumors are out that Florida will part with Jeremy Hermidia for the right package. That would be worth exploring. I would part with Marshall, Jake Fox, and Felix Pie for him. Just some reality and some thoughts.

ohh man.. seriously i'm about to be sick to my stomach if this STUPID trade goes through.. I've never heard of something this stupid in a long time. Not only is Mike Fontenot my favorite player, but also he was their most reliable bench player. ahh I am seriously getting an upset stomach from this crazy stupidity!!!!!

This would be a great trade for the Cubs. Teahan is young and very talented. Playing in Chicago's offensive lineup will provide him with good hitting protection he didn't receive inKansas City's weak lineup. He has outstanding power and can really drive the ball deep in the gaps. His offensive production will skyrocket in Wrigley and he could very well hit 30 homeruns, bat close to .300 and 90-100 RBI's. He can hit the ball a long way, not many cheap homeruns. He also possesses an outstanding throwing arm from the outfield. I believe he led the A.L in assists or pretty close to it 2 years ago. He has a cannon for an arm and baserunners stopped challenging him once the assists started piling up. He can play 3rd base also, and does a great job there as well. As I said before, his offense will surge playing in Chicago compared to Royals Stadium. He's a heck of a player and definitely take the Cubs upward, believe me. This would be a great, cheap acquisition for the Cubs and they need to do this. He is a great team player also and gets along with everybody. No problems at all. The Cubs need to make this trade quickly as they will really benefit from this. Go Cubs

I also forgot to add in the above comment that Teahen is an outstanding base runner. He was by far the best player the Royals had when on base. He's just a good smart baseball player who knows how to play the game. He has good size also at 6'3 - 210/215, and can really move around the bases. Why think about Ibanez when Teahen is almost 10 years younger and much cheaper. Maybe Ibanez can hit, but he is a terrible defensive player. This should be a no brainer for the Cubs in getting Teahen.

I agree with MOST everyone. MINUS those who support this rediculous trade. I'm not saying Teahen is terrible or that he wouldn't be a good fit with the cubs, just NOT AT THE PRICE OF FONTENOT!! take marshall, cedeno, and some mid-level prospect. Hermedia would do more damage at the confines. Ibanez would be good but a strech from reality. KEEP YOUR ATTENTION ON MILTON BRADLEY, we all know how Jim Hendry likes quality players in the bargin bin.
***Dear mikeblaschke@alo.com***.
Good investigating, but any decent players numbers will skyrocket when give the protection of the cubs offense, when there was little protection before. I want a guy who puts up biggg numbers without the help. imagine the possibilities.

To all the Teahan supporters up there. I don't think anyone is trying to bash Teahan. I just think no one wants to give up Fontenot to get him. Fontenot is an important piece to this Cubs team. Lets not forget he hit double digit homeruns off the bench last year and plays pretty good defense at second base. I'm all for getting Teahan just not at the expense of Fontenot. I still think Ibanez is the player to get. I'm really only concerned with getting Peavy. Him and CC are hands down the top available players this offseason and it would be a big benefit for the Cubs to bring him in. There was a time when the Cubs were supposed to have the best rotation to ever. Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Maddux, Clement. But injuries stopped that. Our rotation was really good last year especially after we added Harden but it would look amazing with Peavy, Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, and Lilly. Trade Marquis and we still got Marshall and Hill.
