Reliever pursuit
Right-handed relievers Juan Cruz, Doug Brocail and Russ Springer have emerged as potential targets for the Phillies, according to various reports. Cruz is the best and youngest of the litter, compiling a 4-0 record and a 2.61 ERA with the Arizona
Diamondbacks last season, and holding batters to a .192 average. The Giants are also believed to have interest.
A potential snag is that the team's preference is to sign a reliever who isn't a Type-A free agent, meaning they won't have to surrender a first-round draft pick in June. All three pitchers are Type-A players. but that stipulation disappears if either isn't offered salary arbitration by their former teams by Dec. 1.
They Phillies likely aren't in much hurry, given that two key bullpen pieces -- J.C. Romero and Scott Eyre -- were added they had been waived by the Red Sox and Cubs, respectively, and a third, Chad Durbin, was way off the radar. -- Ken Mandel

Why are the Phillies looking for a reliever? Their bullpen was iron tight during the playoffs. Did we loose someone I don't know about?

That last paragraph is confusing. Can you please rewrite it so that we may all understand the status of Romero, Eyre and Chad Dubrin?

The Phillies are looking for another reliever , because Madson didn't do so well in the regular season as he did in the postseason so adding another reliever would benifit the in the regular season

Gorden will not becoming back and Happ, who was in the bull pen for the post season will be in the minors or starting.

The last paragraph meant that the Phils aren't in a hurry because they may get more bullpen help through waivers. Romero and Eyre were both picked up off waivers and are main pieces of bullpen. They are not in a rush because they may benefit from other teams letting players go.

Yikes...Please tell me that this wasn't posted by an actual "writer". Ever hear of proofreading?
Secondly, what do you mean Madson didn't do well during the season? He had one of the lowest ERA's on the team. (3.05), with the most innings pitched (82.2). He only allowed 6 home runs all year, with almost a strikeout per inning. Before the Game 5 HR, he hadn't let up one in the sand box that is CBP since April! I think its been well established that he can be our go-to guy in the 8th.

How about the phillies going after Ben Sheets or A.J burnett. Oh Yeah shilling is a free agent(lol). Re-sign Burrell

What is the stroy on Chris Benson, Carlos Carrasco and Matt Smith that we got from the Yankees. Any possibility on relief or perhaps a started in Carrasco. I say bring up Carrasco, (hopefully Spring Traiing will speak to this because if Amaro Jr is being advised by Gillick he will be moving slow anyway), offer Pat Burrell a 3 year / $30 mil or donate Eaton, trade Happ, Jeff Jenkins and some of the Burrell dollars for a top notch left fielder.

YIKES! is right, the net is full of hack writers. It is cheaper to hire them, and therfore this is the type of writing we can expect to get. Just a suggestion but whomever hired this guy should be fired, and send the writer to community college for some remedial comp courses. It pretty funny when the comments are better written then the story line

No one will take Eaton, they just need to release him and forget it ever happen. I say resign Burrell, what left fielder could they possibly get from trading Happ & Jenkins? I think Carrasco is the real deal and should be looked at as a potential starter. I think the rotation will be fine as long as they let Carrasco or Happ take the fifth spot and leave Kendrick in the minors. The bullpen is fine, but I wouldn't mind adding Cruz, but not for a draft pick.

First of all from day, 1 Adam Eaton has been a huge waste of money and space and he should go to jail with all the money hes stealing from the phils... With Tom Gordon and Rudy Seanez gone they will need to sign another reliever or two... I hope they sign Juan cruz ... Springer was good when he was here forever ago and even at 40 wouldnt be that bad...stay away from brocail hes a group 1 guy and will cost us a first rounder if we get him

1) We didn't USE Gordon most of the year and when we did, his injuries significantly affected his performance
2) Madson earned the role of the primary "bridge to Lidge" although any of the Phils bullpen could have filled that role. In the postseason, the Bullpen would have won the MVP award as their stinginess was Scroogian (pre-ghost).
Remember, Blanton struggled till he came over to the Phillies. There may be a market for Eaton and the Phils would do well to get rid of the salary and put it toward their current needs.
As for any reliever spots, I'm for just bringing Kendrick and Happ in for the 5th starter spot and letting them fight it out in Spring Training with the loser getting Seanez's role.
The Phils are in the unique position of being able to offer up-and-comers like Carrasco as tradebait, as he's pretty much blocked this season with the pitching-heavy Phillies. Still, when it comes to pitching, there is no such thing as too much depth. It's a no-lose situation.
