Reds and Rockies talking?
FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, with info according to his sources, is reporting that the Reds are talking with the Rockies about trading center fielder Willy Taveras, third baseman Garrett Atkins and catcher Yorvit Torrealba.
All three players would help the Reds fill some needs. They are in need of a leadoff hitter, a catcher and most importantly, a right-handed hitter with power and run production ability.

How do they acquire all of those guys? where are that many prospects high in the reds system? Unless Colorado is just looking to get em for unfulfilled older prospects like Bailey, Encarnacion and such

i am all up for trading homer bailey for any of these players, he has a lot of potential but i have heard he doesnt want to listen to his pitching coaches, maybe a change of scenery would help him because he seems to be regressing in louisville and when he comes to the bigs.

I love Atkins. If the Reds could put him at 3B and maybe move Edwin to left.We do need another catcher too.Hanigan was nice last season at the end but we havent seen a whole year out of him.Taveras ...ah not sure he could play everyday. He steals bases but he doesnt hit much.I agree Homer needs some new scenery

The BIG question is, how much do the Reds give up. I still like my idea putting Votto in the outfield and getting Texeria for a couple of years. Also, picking up Nick Punto.

Atkins looks good, but Taveras is nothing more than a faster version of Patterson -- can't hit and has a low OBP. As a matter of fact, his career average is right there with Patterson. Same with Torrealba --- no bat.
I think Hanigan more than proved himself and is already better than Torrealba. Atkins - I like. I have a feeling that Encarnacion would be a part of the deal. I have been a big proponent of Edwin thinking every year that it's time for a breakout, but it just isn't happening. His streaky hitting makes it impossible to rely on him in the upper or middle of the order. I think it might be time to part ways with him and Bailey.

I agree with the question asked.... At what cost does it take to obtain these players?

That question scares me... what does Jocketty give up?

Taveras? No thanks. He's no upgrade from Dickerson/Hopper/Freel. Torrealba? Eh, maybe. Atkins? Hmmm. What's the cost? Maybe Bailey and EE for those 2 guys? I'd consider that..........

talk radio told me taveras has a .202 leadoff average, we already have guys that can do that, why trade for players that cant perform in colorado a mediocre team to cincinnati a mediocre team who i wish would get the wallet out. The Reds think they are the next Rays, which by far wont happen. I hope I am wrong... GO REDS

I agree don't give up the farm for these guys. And we have or had too many .200 leadoff hitters. You have to be careful trading with the Rockies. Their Avgs and Power as I have seen in the past goes down on the road more than at home there. Possibly trade Baily or Encanarcion but no Starters or possible bring up starters(like-Dickerson). But leave Tavaras where he is. We need a .300 leadoff man- or keep what we have. Maybe Dickerson can be that man?

I believe it's a good deal to make for the right price...Bailey and Encarnacion would be parts worth dealing. Torrealba would serve as a decent backup to Hanigan, Atkins provides a much needed upgrade at third and Taveras could simply compete for a job. Even if the Reds make this deal i see them as still looking for one more good right handed bat for the outfield...As far as the Reds picking up Teixiera...get real that's not going to happen

I really like Atkins.... As a Rocky....
I get a feeling that a swap of EE for Atkins does two things. EE becomes the hitter everyone wanted him to be in Colorado, and Atkins becomes the hitter no one wants in Cincy. Granted, the drop off from Coors to GABP isn't as great as it would be elsewhere, but still...
Torealba as a back up catcher, and getting Bailey off your back wouldn't be bad.

I think all this about getting Atkins, Torrealba, and Taveras is just rumor. Walt Jockety will not trade the farm to get mediocrity. Give the guy a break! Don't assume until it's official. Reds need to get rid of Encarnacion anyway. He strikes out way too much and can't play defense. Bailey has also had his chances but has failed. Reds should also move Micah Owings to the outfield but I have a feeling he'll be in the rotation unless Cincy can get another outfielder. I'm so happy that Patterson is only gone. I think an outfield of Votto, Bruce and Dickerson would be nice. Keppinger 3B, Gonzalez SS (if he can stay healthy) if not put Freel there, Phillips 2B, put Encarnacion at 1B to cut down on his throwing errors then Hannigan C, I think he did a good enough job there last year. Believe me, if the Reds make a deal it'll be Shortstops and Pitchers, as they have plenty of good prospects at those positions. Go Reds!

atkins yes the rest no.sometimes the reds remind me of a farm team for the rest of the majors they trade away their best and get nothing in return or they leave the next year. If they keep Encarnacion I think puting him in left is a great idea.shortstop Keppinger and hairston if I am spelling his name right were good there. trade Gonzalez.

Here's the question I think no one is asking: Why would The Reds trade a right handed batter (Encarnacion) to get a right handed batter (Atkins) in return?
I was under the impression that a need was to -add- a right handed bat, not switch one out for another.
I also think that any comments about "the economy" or "small market" should be seen as an excuse. Last time I checked society deemed teams like The Phillies and Rays as "small market". Weren't they in The World Series? Oh yeah...they were.
If ownership is pinching pennies because they feel they can't afford to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads we then will have more to worry about than who's at first, second, short, or third.

encarnacion sucks. atkins would be a huge upgrade at 3rd. i say trade prospects for atkins and then trade encarnacion maybe for some relief help and a prospect. atkins was among league leaders in hitting against lefthanded pitching. huge help. plays solid defense too

If Double E "sucks" (as you say) what makes you think anyone else will want him (outside of General Leather Pants maybe)?
Instead of trading for major league ready players maybe get Atkins and some prospects and move some of those players wasting away in Louisville to the big show?

I think the Reds deserve a good outfield or third basemen. It has been suckish the past few years with Griffey and Encarnacion. They were prone to errors. Hanigan was good but not great. He can't hit clutch. Cincinnati after the loss of Nuxy:( was in shock but played for him. Whatever they do they better not trade Brandon Phillips or they are dead.

First off, I saw someone mention the idea of bringing in Teixeira for a couple of years. Well, I hate to break it to you, but you can forget about that deal going down. There's no way the Reds are splurging on Teixy...so you can figure on Votto being the 1st baseman for the foreseeable future. Second, everyone keeps mentioning trading Edwin as part of the deal, but unless the Rockies are planning on moving Edwin to the OF, the Rockies won't be looking to acquire a third baseman in exchange for Atkins. I would believe they are leaning towards going with Ian Stewart as the everyday 3b if Atkins is dealt away. If the Rockies would deal those players (Atkins, Taveras, Torrealba) to the Reds, I would expect the following to be included: Drew Stubbs and Homer Bailey...and possibly Devin Mesoraco.
As it stands right now, the Rockies would likely have an OF of Hawpe, Spilborghs and Taveras. However, if Taveras is dealt away, I would expect prospects Seth Smith and Dexter Fowler to be given consideration to fill one of those OF's positions in the spring.
If the Reds can unload EE on the Rockies, I say go for it. And, then the Reds can use whomever they want for the time being in LF, while they try to decide whether to shift Yonder Alonso out there, or Votto. Both guys are athletic enough to make the move, but I think Votto profiles better out there with more mobility than Alonso. Although, Alonso played multiple positions at Miami (FL) if I'm not mistaken, so don't take anything away from him. Plus, if you can get Yonder's bat in the line-up, the Reds would have it in their best interest to do so. He's going to be a stud hitter.

The Reds wouldn't trade EE to the Rockies, they would trade him to another team looking for a 3B. Right now it looks like either the Dodgers (who lost Blake), Giants, or maybe White Sox would have an opening. The White Sox though just picked up Wilson Betimit (sp?) so unless they resign Joe Crede he may be looking to play 3B next year for them.
I hope the Reds don't trade Drew Stubbs. I would like to see him get a chance to play in the big show. An OF of Stubbs, Dickerson, and Bruce seems really good imho.
What makes you think Alonso is going to be a stud hitter? How long did it take him to pick up a pen and sign his name after being drafted? He has had enough time in the minor leagues to fill a 30 minute reality show, and that's not really enough time to determine if one is major league ready (imho). Hopefully if the Reds are serious about him then they will groom him in the minors like they should, as opposed to moving their players around as often as they do.
At this point I would be up for trading Bailey for Atkins, and then dealing EE to another team for some prospects.

I still see the reds dealing for more than just one right-handed bat. someone mentioned what would the point be in dealing one right handed hitter away(EE) for another(Atkins)...the point would be to have one that is more consistent for a whole year not just part as EE is. As for Alonso the knock on him is that he's not even a good first baseman let alone someone who can play the outfield. I'd say the reds are probably thinking of Votto in left in the future. Stubbs and Alonso are yet to prove they can hit big-league pitching....

FIRE SALE IN COLORADO!Wow!First they trade Holliday, now they are shopping Atkins,Torrealba,Taveras and Fuentes just to name a few.The Reds could use Atkins and move Encarnacion to the outfield,Torrealba is OK but the hitting situation would still be minimal and Taveras is no pop,no consistent hitting and as a plus good speed so why would the Reds want him?Leadoff?Nahhhh!!!!Oh by the way to Marlins fans your team is not the only one that is unique for fire sales.....Rockies are following your footsteps.By the way does anyone remember when the Rockies were trying to trade Helton in 2007 and they made it to the World Series? Is he still being shopped around too?Good Luck!
