Reds and Khalil Greene?

A report in the San Diego Union Tribune has the Reds among three teams interested in trading for Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, who has been at odds with his club and coming off a miserable season where he batted .213. Supposing that the Reds are truly interested, that means they are not convinced shortstop Alex Gonzalez will be ready after he missed all of the 2008 season with microfracture surgery on his knee.

Otherwise, it'd be tough to imagine the Reds taking on Greene's $6.5 million salary in 2009 while also paying Gonzalez $5.375 million for the final year of his three-year contract. Cincinnati also has Jeff Keppinger as a potential plan B at shortstop. Prospect Chris Valaika isn't expected to be ready until 2010 at the earliest.

The report said the Tigers and Orioles were also interested.
