Red Sox looking for RH OF

After dealing outfielder Coco Crisp to the Royals for Ramon Ramirez, the Red Sox have the bullpen depth they need. But now they need another outfielder to replace Crisp. With Jacoby Ellsbury set to take over full-time duties in center, Boston general manager Theo Epstein will try to find a complementary piece to serve as a fourth outfielder.

Epstein said that it is his heavy preference for that outfielder to be a right-handed hitter who has the ability to play center field.

Two players who could fit nicely in that role are Gabe Kapler and Rocco Baldelli, both free agents. Kapler was a popular player with the Red Sox from 2003-2006. After taking a year off to manage in Boston's Minor League system, the outfielder made a comeback with the Brewers in '08 and had a solid year.

For Baldelli, a native of Rhode Island, coming to Boston would be a homecoming. Baldelli has spent his entire career with the Rays.Complicating Baldelli's situation is that he had a mitochondrial disorder in 2008, which caused a constant state of fatigue and prevented his season from starting until Aug. 10.

This is worst case scenario if your the Phillies .... a right handed hitting outfielder is Burrell and the sox have alot of money

could also DH him

Pat Burrell is not going to be a 4th outfielder, even on a contender. It's going to be a player like Kapler or Baldelli.

Money talks ... free agent walks

trade drew, sign teixeira, move youk to right field

I doubt Burrell would want to play in a back up roll. A guy like Emil Brown would fit in nice, he has some pop, and can play anywhere in the outfield.

Last year is over. So is Manny, Schilling, and Timlin. That amounts to just about $30 million in yearly salary...more than enough to buy Terxeira for 6 years or so. Youk can go to 3rd, Mike Lowell can fill in when needed (if not traded first), and we have some PawSox young hitters to fill in the outfield. Awesome, eh?

Burrell doesn't meet theo's spec. Must be able to play CF. Baldelli does, Kapler not so much. Not too sure we're not placing too much emphasis on RH. Willy Taveras is an odd man out in Colorado and may be available pretty cheap. How about Jacoby has a great year, stays healthy, and all this isn't so important.

Teixeira is the prime target. CC, AJ, or Lowe would be nice. I think from Masterson, Wakefield, and Buchholz (got his confidence in the changeup back in the minors) we'll have the 4 and 5 spots covered. Catcher, 162 games, is more of a concern. Tek needs to have the everyday burden lifted and be more of a bench coach in waiting for 2 more years. Lowell one of my favorite Red Soxs because of who he is. Youk, another of my favorite Red Soxs because of who he is, has to play everyday somewhere. If we sign Tex, and I think he may be the most important player to our organization over the next 5-7 years, we in a bind over Lowell. Youk in RF and Drew as the utility is not so bad. With Tex switching maybe the RH OF could be LH.

I would love to see Texeira come to Boston, but has anyone else thought what would happen during interleague games or world series playing without a DH.You would have to sit either Ortiz or Texeira.Besides the Yankees look to be prepared to buy another world series, wouldnt be surprise Texiera ends up there

The sox need a player like Teixeira to fill the power slot behind Ortiz. Teixeira would be a great acquisition and long term. Move Youk to 3rd base and use Mike lowell and Cora as utility players untill one can no longer fill the void. Need to get one more quality pitcher, such as Burnett. One more to fill would be to acquire Saltamachia and resign Tex for two to three years. Then its back to the world series 2009 and kick some...

does anyone know how rehab from a torn hip labrum proceeds? i sure haven't heard much about it and not to discredit Mike Lowell, who i was SO glad to see stay last year, but how sure are we that he can be tip top or even for how long... the more 2 think about how it would be foolish to pass on Texiera if we can get him... last year the platoon in OF was genius and necessary, so who's to say having a wealth of talent IF this year might be the ticket? i vote for getting Tex, signing Tek (PLEASE), keeping Kotsay and / or getting Gabe ( "the body")Kapler back in RS uniform (or, out of one). Lowe would be sweet 2 see back and Baldelli, if others fail, would be cool, too!

Maybe Barrack Obama can save the Red Sox just like he is going to save the rest of the country. funny funny funny. The Stock market lost again today

lona...tell me exactly what catcher you know of that plays 162 games a year. Cap'n Tek plays roughly the same amount as every other starting catcher. I hope nobody takes what you say seriously and you should stay off this blog.

the red sux r done this year they suck

To the morons that want to move Youk to right field, ARE YOU STUPID??? Sure Youk CAN play outfield, but he doesn't cover nearly the same amount of ground as JD does out there. Youk is a gold glove caliber 1st baseman and arguably at 3rd as well if he played an entire season there. This is where he should stay. Would Teixeira be an upgrade? Offensively, probably. But don't discount what Youk did with the bat, (I expect to see his power numbers rise next year as well) and for considerably less then what Teixeira will want. What we need now that Coco is gone is someone with enough speed to play CF if Ellsbury needs a day off. And as for JD Drew, don't forget that in June when Papi was out of the lineup, HE CARRIED THE TEAM. He hit .337 with 12 homers. The "Great" Manny Ramirez hit .286 with only 6 HR in that period. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Teixeira in a Red Sox uniform. And yes, he would have to play 1st. (I don't know that he is versatile enough to play any other position even part time, except DH) The big question is will Mike Lowell come back at 100%? If not, no brainer, Lowell becomes a utility player filling in at 3rd and DH and Youk plays 3rd and fills in when Teixeira needs a day off at 1st. But then what do you do with Papi in a National League park?

The Redsox will probably trade Lugo in the coming weeks. Why can't Youk play SS. He might struggle with range but he can always go back to third in two years when Lowell's contract is over. Youk - to - Petey - to - Tex: not bad!

What about Youk playing second base? Dusty did start off as ****, this may be the answer. 1B -Tex. 2B - Youk. 3B-Lowell. SS-Dusty.

Get Tex, IF they can.

IF they do outbid everyone, trade Lowell (I love him, but that's a big thing to come back from), put Tex at first, push Youk to third, Lowrie at SS, trade Lugo(PLEASE OH PLEASE), have Cora as a utility player. And Mr. MVP at 2nd of course.

Hoping we pick up the other dude and not Dontrelle Willis.

As for outfielder, why not get a combo OF/DH just in case. I'm hoping that Papi rehabs and heals bigtime this offseason.

Considering Tex's bat alone, I think the combo of Bay in LF and Tex behind Papi? Mmmm, I can smell another title :)

To all the armchair general managers out there, get a grip.
Theo will do what is best and most prudent for the success
of the franchise and as much as Mark Teixeira would be a welcome asset,at what kind of disruption are you looking to encounter. To me,the biggest question remains the returning health of Mike Lowell. These ridiculous comments about moving Youk' to right field or shortstop or anywhere else but first or third are coming from some sort of fantasy world where logic is obviously mis-placed.If Lowell can regain his health, the Sox have as solid a starting infield as any team in either league.Another solid bat and some healthy arms for both the rotation and bullpen should be the focus without getting all caught up in rolling the dice on one free agent. The Boston Red Sox are one of the most envied organizations in major league baseball and I look forward to another strong season and another trip deep into October.Chill and let's see what happens between now
and April.Go SOX Go.

ok appearently not many of you know youk is a third basemen naturally lowell is getting up there so goodbye to him put youk on third texiera on first get rid of lugo put lowerie on ss keep all your out fielders and aquire kaplar again baldili is not gonna be a 4th man hes good and knows it maybe fatigue is an issue and if that the situation hes undependable

for the idiots that think youk should go to rf or ss your stupid dropkick yourself

oh and one other thing as un popular as it may be get rid of tek hes not the catcher he once was and i think he left his bet in the caymans when he was on vaca

I think it would br great to pick up Baldelli, even though he has a disease that affects his playing time, who cares he would be used as a back up and he would know it. Baldelli is a great player and he would be a great aquisition for the Sox!

Smoking gun I think tour smoking something.Teks bat was not the greatest this year but he does make up for it by calling a great game time after time.Oh and I think you might want to pick up a dictionary and find out how to spell BAT.

alright enough talk about trading drew and putting youk at third left and right field, thats moronic, the red sox arn't putting a gold glove first baseman in the out field, also you can't just trade someone, you have to find someone whose interested, and i like drew but his numbers arn't that appealing, don't think anyone is going to be jumping for drew. i am all for signing tex but have a 4 man rotation between him lowell youk and ortiz especially considering hes a switcher. so before you start trading drew and throwing our gold glove first baseman in the outfield, lets think about injuries and match ups, i am liking the idea of switch hitting tex in a 4 man rotation with ortiz youk and lowell considering the injury plagued years for lowell and ortiz

also as for getting rid of tek, im willing to let him hit 220 when hes calling no hitters. he had an off year, lots of people have them, except they're not calling no hitters, shut outs, complete games and 10+ strike out performances while they're doing it. and for any doubt about how well tek can call a game, hes the only catcher in major league history to call 4 no hitters. yea, the guy who called 4 no hitters isn't yogi berra pudge rodriguez calrton fiske or johnny bench, its the guy we have right now, so how about we hang on to him, see how many pitchers he can conduct into shut outs complete games and no hitters

I don't think you could even think about putting Youk in RF. That is borderline retarted. JD is a good fit there, not worried about it. Tek NEEDS to resign; NO MATTER WHAT! Tax would be a great pick up, BUT what about Kevin Millar? Millar a great emotional leader, putting up decent numbers, and is in a close lead as one of my most fav red sox of all time. Move Youk to third, get something for Lowell. For the red sox to stay competitive this year they need to sign 1 of the three pref 2 of the 3. The red sox should make CC an offer somewhat close if not a little more then the yankees. puch line; come to boston and CC gets his ring, maybe 3 or 4. AJ will prolly end up with us, which is a good pick up. Would love to see Lowe comeback. my ranks of the three 1 CC 2 AJ 3 Lowe. Got to land one, and need another power guy behind Papi

Iwould like to have tex also but youk and pedroia will be up for contracts incouple of years and they need to stay! We always need to be reminded of the future. Tex my tie up to much future money. Youk and Pedroia will not be cheap!!

Wow....there is something seriously wrong with a lot of u ppl out there. This MLB not some crazy looney tunes fanstasy baseball game. Youk in RF or 2B? What are you crazy??? First of all when you have a gold glove MVP 2B you don't move him...nor do u put ur gold glove 1B in the outfield. Youk has the ability to play anywhere but the red sox wwould only benifit from him if he is at one of the inf. Corner possitions. This is what the red sox need to do: first things first....SIGNV-Tek!!! Ppl might critisize his battin but the way I see it he calls the best game out there period! Ill take a .240 ba when he's out there calling no hitters and gems. Next sign Burnett. He looks like a great fit in the rotation ...also he and josh where teamates for 4 years back in florida. The yanks can have CC I think he would b way too injury proon for the sox plus he can't pitch in OCT. Sign Tex. We need a big bat ....don't know how lowell is gonna recover if he'll be at 100%. Move Youk to third and have lowell fill in (if not traded). Keep lowrie at ss. Last 4 shortstops came in via free agency or a trade and none did any good woth the exception of cabrera....lowrie came up through the sox system...keep himand giive hima shot he deserves it. Trade Lugo!!! And not for dontrell please....last but not least sign kapler over baldelli to back up ellsburry. Kapler has played in this enviroment and knows how its done in boston...baldelli is not a good fit with that disease he has.

if you think about it pedroia was once a shortstop turned into a second baseman. so shortstop wouldnt be a bad idea for that. but youk playing second is another story. he wouldnt have the range to play second but it could be an option. and lowrie could back both of them up.

I have to think you need to pass on Texeira. He is undoubtedly a great player, but i think his asking price is too much. In the next few years the sox are gonna need to sign papelbon, ellsbury, pedroia, and Youkilis. They can't blow all the money now and then lose all their francise players. If the sox focus on pitching this off-season, i think they will be fine. JD Drew showed what he is capable of when Papi went down. If he can do that more then Papi will have protection. Also, Youk and Bay are young players that have shown some power potential. I think they will become good power hitters and fill the void left my manny ramirez.

I was pointing out we have to cover 162 games, not play anybody 162. That's a stupid conclusion!

I still like Youk in RF He is gold glove at 1B & 3B because of his cat quick reflexes not speed. With Bay and Jacoby out there RF is a little bit smaller. Drew will get a lot of playing time spelling all three and possible late innings defense in RF. At Fenway RF never was that big to begin with--especially down the line. Lowell is expected to be 100% recovered. With Tex switch hittings he will be a better backup to Ortiz than Manny. Better yet he's got Bay covering him up. We don't need another OF is this senario. We had to sit Youk or Lowell to play David in interleague last year so no big deal to only have Tex or David for interleague. Besides its only 19 games. For those of you complaining about Youk's GG in RF--Ahhhh Tex has one too. no loss there!!

Lowell also plays gold glove 3B. I really like Tex behind David. Againsit right handers it's a frightening 1-2. Against left handers they have to pitch to David because Text will be next right handed with the short porch. Awesom!

Most of these comments are talking about Red Sox players and possible Red Sox players that are major leaguers. Now about the situation in the outfeild how does Josh Reddick fit into the equation? all the reports indicate that this guy has alot of the qualities of a young Dwight Evans. Also looking at the reports on the Red Sox minor leaguers their appears to be a first baseman Lars Anderson who seems destined to be a fine major league first baseman. At shortstop I have read reports that say that Argentine Diaz and Yamanico Navarro are doing "Ozzie Smith" like thinks at shortstop. Particularly intriguing is Navarro because it appears he is a great contact hitter to! On the mound sooner or later Michael Bowden will make his return to the big leagues and Clay Bucholtz and Daniel Bard and his 100 mile an hour fastball will come along to.
Just a few years ago these guys were the Pedroia's, Youks, Pap's, Lesters, Ellsburies, Loweries and Masterson's. The minor league experts are saying the next wave is coming.
Trading Crisp was the right thing to do but we will sure miss what he brought to the club he helped win a world series, lets not forget that.

OK,

Whoever said Youk should play RF is retarded. He should be placed in the rotation and start opening day. He has a nasty underhanded knuckle ball that averages 103 mph. Plus he can switch pitch and throw lefty or righty. I think he can even throw with both hands at the same time.

I'd also put Big Papi behind the plate, Shilling in right, Fred Lynn in center, Francona could DH, Don Zimmer could pinch run and Lugo could sell hot dogs in the stands. :)

Sign Gary Sheffield to platoon with Drew. Drew can also platoon in center.

With Baldelli's condition, I don't think he could play a month straight if Drew goes down. I think Baldelli is a bad move.

Some may say Sheff is a bad move but as a rent-a-player on a true contender maybe Sheff could keep his attitude in check long enough to help the Sox win.

I think Texiera is a terrible idea. I feel like he is A-Rod minus the drama.

here is what you do.... if tex isnt signed boo hoo. i would like to see either nomar in a sawx uni or you could rely on our farm teams. also, has anyone heard of daniel bard???? on the sea dogs, i watched him hit 101 on the gun. he could help our pen, right???? also, dont sign tek, trade for taylor teagarden and have him start. and about the outfield problem, if nobody is signed, and in mid 2009 ellsbury isnt doing so great, JOSH REDDICK!!!!!!!!! i saw some videos, and he could be reallly good. also, we have good players in the farm at first and behind the dish. if this happens, 2009 champs : BOSTON REDSOX!!!!!!!

why look for a fourth outfielder.......sign Taxiera, and have Youk be the all around baseball player that he is.......and to make it worth while for Youk, give him a big contract extension. Youk will love being the highest paid utility man on earth for a couple of years till Lowell's contract is up! Also, Youk is all about winning.....he will do whatever it takes, and he will still get his 550 at bats.....no doubt

I think that Baldelli would make a great backup outfielder. Just look at what he did with the Rays in the post season. I think that he is someone that we could count on in a cluch situation. Plus he is someone that could be a fulltime outfielder if someone like J.D. Drew gets hurt. Everyone knows that his back has a mind of it's own!

HEY GUYS LETS PUT YOUK AS THE NEW CATCHER!!! -_-''' come on guys youk will stay at first if not third and you can quote me on that. This isnt a video game where you just make room for people and say well he's a really good fielder at first so lets put him at short you gotta think. Youk had an amazing year w/ the bat why would you change his position and distract him from concentrating on furthering his beastly hitting?

Look let me tell you something about Mike Lowell I played High School Babeball and grew up playing next to him in Miami, FL. Don't count this guy out, every body wants to make him a utility player are you crazy! This guy was your MVP World Series just last year 07. You are writing him off beacuse he was hurt. Let's write off Josh Beckett. He had 2 years in Florida with blister's on his throwing had finger. Let's give hime away or make him a reliever. He had a terrible year. If you check Mike's stats compered to 07, he was on pace to having pretty darn good year. Don't write him off, let's see him healthy and then we will talk. On top that for you folk's out there who don't know baseball the Red Sox are not going to have Lowell as a utility guy they are paying 12.5 mil guarantee contract. Trust me he will start the rest of his contract, unless his hurt. Thank you

The Red Sox would be foolish to add Burrell as their fourth left feilder. They are looking for a rh bat yes, but Burrell is far from being a defensive replacement in cf. Plus, he is proned to long cold and hot streaks. Sitting on the bench and being a fill in could lea to one long cold streak from April to Sept.

Sheffield What are you smoking!! You might as well throw a bomb into the clubhouse! His garbage makes Manny's look like a sunday church picnic Baldelli has good pop, Plus he would be good clubhouse guy. Chemistry is vital! Thats why we were better this year after Manny went!

1. Sign Tex
2. Trade Buchholz, Lowell & Lugo (Lowrie, if necessary) for Teagarden & Michael Young
3. Sign Baldelli or Kapler
4. Sign Lowe
5. Bring on '09

yea signing sheffield is retarded, the red sox arn't going to pay that kind of money for a utility player, the rangers arn't going to trade micheal young and teagarden for one good player that was hurt and a bunch of toss ups, they're not stupid, they know lugo sucks, bucholtz and lowrie still need to prove themselves and lowell was unjured, second we can't rely strictly on our farm system. just because they do awesome down there doesn't mean they're going to up in the majors CC sabathia is gone, the red sox wouldn't even want him, 140 milliion for 6 years is absurd and the yankees are retarded for offering that, concentrate our efforts on getting either burnett or lowe, see whats going on with tex, im pretty sure he's content with going to the nationals anyway since he lives in maryland and do our best with lowell, and millar is way worse than lowell, that'd be a dumb move, also the biggest thing i think alot of people here are forgetting is that the red sox arn't made of money, so sign tek go for either lowe or burnett and see where we stand with tex by then

and the kid who said all the **** making fun of the retards who want youkilis to play every position is hilarious

and oneeeeeeeeeeeeee last thing to put this whole article to bed. for the people who are just tossing up all these trade possibilities, the other team doesn't have to do a trade just because you think its a good idea.
