Rabelo placed on outright waivers
The Marlins made a move to free up a spot on their 40-man roster on Tuesday when they placed catcher Mike Rabelo on outright waivers. If the 28-year-old catcher, who is a switch-hitter, isn't claimed in the next 72 hours, he could then be outrighted to Florida's Triple-A New Orleans affiliate.
Acquired from the Tigers last December as part of the Miguel Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis trade, Rabelo split catching duties with Matt Treanor in the first half the season. He appeared in 34 games and batted .202 with three home runs and 10 RBIs, as he was hampered by some injurires. In Spring Training, he hurt his left knee and hip in a home-plate collision. On June 24, he was optioned to Triple-A, and he didn't rejoin the Marlins the rest of the season. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sept. 1.
