Mets talking Fuentes
Give the Mets points for keeping their options open. Even while taking a hard look at one of this year's top winter prizes, Francisco Rodriguez, the team is actively pursuing another free agent closer, Brian Fuentes. The two sides have already been in contact, according to multiple published reports, and are scheduled to meet face-to-face at some point during this week's GM meetings in Dana Point, Calif. The Mets are reportedly one of multiple teams -- including the Angels, Indians and Tigers -- pursuing the lefthander.
Take this for what it's worth, as well: the NY Daily News quoted GM Omar Minaya in Tuesday's editions saying that now that the Mets have picked up Carlos Delgado's $12 million option for next season, they do not plan on trading him off to another team. It's the same song they've been singing about second baseman Luis Castillo since the season ended -- and whether it's true remains to be seen. But what's clear is that there's a real chance that the Mets will report to Spring Training with the same starting lineup, focusing all their Hot Stove dealings on pitching. Fuentes would be a strong start in that direction.
