Market grows for Oliver
As left-handed relievers draw more and more attention on the free-agent market, Darren Oliver now has interest from 10 teams, according to agent Mike McCann. That group includes the Tigers, who have had multiple conversations with McCann and rank among about a handful of clubs with serious consideration.
Even so, don't expect Oliver to sign with any club soon. As a Type A free agent, he isn't expected to finalize a deal until after Dec. 1, when the Angels must decide whether to offer him arbitration and try to get a first- or second-round Draft pick in return for him. The Angels are also in the mix to re-sign him.
"It's early [for teams], and it's early for us, too," McCann said. "We're still trying to gather some facts at this point."
So far, the market should look good. Recent deals for Damaso Marte with the Yankees and Jeremy Affeldt with the Giants likely ensure that the 38-year-old Oliver will get a multi-year deal. He earned a one-year contract plus a vesting option from the Angels when he last hit the market after the 2006 season.
Oliver potentially fills two needs for the Tigers, who are looking for a second lefty reliever alongside Bobby Seay while also seeking someone who can handle an inning or two at a time in middle-inning and setup situations.

Why am I not excited about having a 38 year reliever on the roster? If its all about the money I think John Hiller could be brought back to throw a few innings...

I'm really not sure giving Darren Oliver a multi-year deal is a good idea The Tigers have a history of giving two-year contracts to relievers
Danny Patterson- Okay deal, injured later
Doug Brocail- Solid until injuries
Troy Percival- Nothing for us, incredible comeback later
Todd Jones- Really good 06 and 07
One year- Bobby Seay has been a great suprise and so was Byrdak for a time. Cruceta was a total disaster that was a quiet summer long drama.
My point is that the Tigers are good at picking the invitees (Seay), good at the short term deals (Jones) but wisely ignored Jamie Walker's quest for 3 years.
Dave, do the same with Oliver.
