Kerry Wood out of Tigers' range

Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski all but ruled out the Tigers from pursuing former Cubs closer Kerry Wood, who hit the open market Friday when Chicago traded for Kevin Gregg. After Dombrowski reiterated his stance that the Tigers would not be in on the top tier of closers, he was asked whether he considered Kerry Wood a top-tier closer. Dombrowski said yes.

Wood is believed to be seeking at least a three-year contract. That's too long of a commitment for the Tigers, who believe they can have one of their Minor League relievers ready to close by 2010.

Dombrowski reinforced that fast track, too. Some of last year's Draft crop of college players, he said, "are going to move very fast." That Draft group includes first-rounder Ryan Perry, a hard-throwing closer candidate.

I would love to see Wood come on down to Florida and workout for the Rays. We will get a decision soon about Percival, and I truly think he is about done.............might have 60 or so innings left in the old arm then hit the pasture.

Wood would give us not only a stable of throwers at the end of the game, but a guy who is a proven closer, which we have not had since Dany Baez left the Rays
