Ibanez anyone?

How does Raul Ibanez in left field sound?

For now, he's just the latest player linked to the Phillies as a possible target, per a report in New York's Newsday. Other suitors include the Mets, Marlins and Dodgers, should they lose out on Manny Ramirez. One person familiar with the team's thinking suggested this could be true.

The 36-year-old free-agent hit .293 with 23 homers and 110 RBIs for the Mariners last season, and has a long history with advisor Pat Gillick and new assistant general manager Benny Looper.

One potential snag is that Ibanez bats left-handed, and the team appears to prefer a right-handed complement to lefty batters Geoff Jenkins, Matt Stairs and Greg Dobbs. (The names Jerry Hairston Jr., Juan Rivera, Rocco Baldelli and Gabe Kapler keep coming up for that reason). That said, Ibanez hit .305 vs. lefties last season, though his career average vs. southpaws is .268.<p />

While the market develops for Ibanez, who is believed to be seeking a three-year deal that would take him through his 39th birthday, the Phillies will also keep tabs on Pat Burrell, and they continue to explore that possibility.

Ibanez, like Burrell, may have to wait until Manny Ramirez finds a home, and that could be at least three weeks. Ibanez is a Type-A free agent, meaning he would cost the Phillies a first-round draft pick if they sign him, assuming the Mariners offer him arbitration. -- Ken Mandel

Um, and this is supposed to be an "upgrade" at this position if Burrell is gone? I don't think so.....

I haven't seen a name yet, (except Manny), that would be an UPGRADE in left field. Come on Ruben, offer the $$$ to Pat and get him signed. The rise in ticket prices alone ought to be enough to cover the expected payroll increases for the team!

How does Ibanez sound ? Not good ! We dont need another left handed bat.We dont need another Geoff Jenkins. If Jenkins is making 6.75 Mil next year then I'm sure Ibanez will get like 10 mil. Also He's old.We dont need to get old and pay for guys on the disabled list.It makes Pat Burrell sound much better. The tigers need a closer. How about trading Brett Myers there in a package for Magglio Ordonez.Ordonez is signed set to make 18 Mil next year.We can then go out and sign Ben Sheets and Brad Penny for cheap. You can never have enough pitching!

You know, as a long time fan who has watched Pat Burrell work his way up to a World Series, it is a bit insulting that instead of hearing that the Phillies are focusing on re-signing him, they are focused on grabbing the various hacks that are out there! RE-SIGN PAT THE BAT!

I agree with most bloggers keeping Pat Burrell would make the most sense . I would bat him cleanup splitting the lefties, Howard in the fifth slot. As an oppossing manager last year i would have walked Howard 90% to get to Pat setting up possible double plays. This should cause other managers to make additional pitching changes in several situations.

Ok I'm the biggest Pat Burrell supporter. Always loved him even before the band wagon jumpers were hating him from 2003-2007. But before you comment on players you don't know, learn the facts. I agree it's another left handed bat and God forbid a left faces a lefty. But in their careers, they have almost the same amount of games and AB'S. Ibanez has 200 more hits, 20 more triples, just 70 less HR's to 30 less RBI's. But 500 less more strikeouts in the same amount of AB's with a career AVG. of 30 points higher. So my point is relax with knocking the Phillies for "checking" a player out. But yes I totally agree with it being great if Pat comes back.

Let's say Pat does'nt return.I've seen these names as possible replacements.Hermida,Ibanez,Rivera,Kapler,
Hairston Jr. and Baldelli. The top two that stand out on the list are Hairston and Ibanez.Hairston only had 80 AB's but hit 384 with 6 HR's with 15 steals But strikes out 36/80 times.Ibanez on the other hand played in 162 Games and hit 23 HR's and hit 293.Struck out 110 Times. And he's 36 years old.Ibanez 110 stike outs in 635 AB's.compares better than anyone else.Kapler in 229 AB hit 8 HR's with 39 Strike outs.Hit 301 .If i were to choose i guess i'd have to settle for ???????

I usually don't bother commenting on these articles but your foolish comments left me no choice..

First of all, you cannot be seriously comparing Raul Ibanez to Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins is a joke, the definition of getting old in the majors. The Phillies should just release him frankly. Ibanez is an all star caliber player each and every year but doesn't get the votes because he plays in lowly Seatle. Yes, he is on the older side, but doesn't play like it at all. He is easily an uprade over Pat Burrell. Burrell is the man, I've cheered him and booed him just like the rest of you during his years here, but face it he just can't stay consistent over an entire year. Ibanez, on the other hand is very consistent and will give you a lot more quality at bats Such as when the Phils have a guy on third with 1 or less outs, Ibanez makes contact with the best of them when Burrell would most likely strike out or pop up. And jdstern, you really expect the Tigers to even consider trading Magglio Ordonez?? That's just funny, why would they part ways with their most consistent and best hitter the past few years?? No one wants that contract of his anyway.

But back to Ibanez, he's a dedicated ball player who puts up solid numbers when healthy, and can also swipe a few bags during the course of the season, so no need for your eric bruntlett pinch runner every game.

What we should do is try to trade Jayson Werth in a package for a Alex Rios or Nick Markakis. Werth is an overacheiver in the friendly confines of Citzens Bank, and although a fan favorite I already think his best years are behind him

You were close man. But listen there's NO need to knock Jenkins. Talk about dedicated. This guys all heart. And there numbers are virtually identical too. Jenkins has 40 more HR's but more K'S. Like i said Ibanez is a great player. But what's with everybody loving to rip players. It's stupid. And about playing in lowly Seattle, try Milwaukee were Jenkins played. And he's 2 years younger then Ibanez. And 34 SB'S in 12 years to Jenkins 32 in 10. Both aren't tearing up the bases. Listen I'm the one who said i like Ibanez. I just hate when everybody has to insult players to get their "point" across. And as for Werth, i agree people make him out to be much greater then he is. But Markakis aint't going anywhere. He's got arbitration for ever and is Bal. 3 hitter and aint going anywhere. And Rios is solid but they tried that before and looks like jays locked up him and Wells for awhile. So I hear ya.

glenn.benjamin1 writes" we should trade Myers for Ordonez."
I almost never post, but I do enjoy reading about my team. Most people have no clue. They always want to trade out cr.p for someone elses jewels.
This was the first proposal that makes any sense. Myers loves to close. He is up and down as a starter. ( I still want him on my team, because quality arms are hard to find). This kind of trade is a win win for both teams. The Phills most likely would have to sweeten the deal, but sounds do-able. All depends on Burrell. If the Phils can sign him to a 2 year deal, (he wants 3), then I think that is what they will do.

jdstern40 was the poster I was writing about. Sorry for not giving correct credit..

Ibanez would be a great fit for the Mets. Even at his age...he has more RBI's then any LF in baseball in the past 3 years
