How much longer will Braves have interest in Peavy?

The Braves still don't intend to begin pursuing Jake Peavy again unless the Padres re-open these trade negotiations which ended last week.  While they still would like to bring Peavy to Atlanta, the Braves are currently wondering if they'll still have an interest or the financial resources to do so, if and when the the Padres come calling again.

Braves general manager Frank Wren is ready to accelerate his attempt to acquire top-caliber starting pitchers.  While Wren might not be willing to provide the fifth year that A.J. Burnett is seeking, he certainly has interest in Burnett and the financial resources to compete with other teams that are attempting to land the veteran right-hander.

Wren wasn't fazed earlier this week, when it was reported that the Yankees were preparing to offer Burnett a five-year, $80 million contract.  His initial skepticism has seemingly proven profound as subsequent reports have indicated the Yankees aren't currently willing to offer a fifth year.  This keeps Burnett in play for the Braves and creates the possibility that they could land him or another top-of-the rotation starter and opt not to offer the prospect-rich package required to land Peavy.

Well... it's obvious that Wren needs to land at least one of the two. If not, I consider this off-season an early bust. Our number one need this off-season is a type-A caliber starting pitcher. If we end up landing anything lower in standard (i.e. Jon Garland who is middle-grade) then this has been a horrible off-season. Especially with the money we have to spend and the young talent in our farm system. Last year was a rebuilding year. We need to compete for the division this year. I don't blame him for shifting focus away from Peavy. The Padres were dragging way too long and it was borderline insulting the way they were handling negotiations. With CC to expensive, and Dempster unavailable... Burnett has to be the "go-to-guy" here.

Man, Burnett just screams bust to me. The guy has been on the DL a ton in the last 5 years, generally only does well in his contract year, and from everything I've heard is a bad clubhouse guy. Not to mention you need to sign an injury risk for 5 years.
If I'm wren I do everything I can to get Peavy OR Derek Lowe. Then maybe you can sign a John Garland type.

I agree with both of you on both fronts...Burnett has had problems with injury in the past, but he is also the best pitcher not named CC on the market. I think landing Peavy would have helped out on trying to get another good starter, just showing that the Braves are serious in winning next year, but my big thing is getting an outfield bat to go along with the pitching...I still dont know where that is going to come from. I thought that this offseason would be a good one for the Braves, but it has given me nothing, but headaches. Get Peavy another starter and an outfield bat.

Listen everyone...The braves don't have to just think about this season but for 2010. They need to get Peavy now, and sign Burnett, but not for 5 years. Now picture this Starting rotation for 2010: Peavy, Hudson (remember him?), Burnett, Jurrjens, and Hanson.....Somebody pinch me cuz we are winning a World Series with that Rotation! Again, I'm scared of health concerns but that can happen with Derek Lowe who has never been on the DL, (Tom Glavine anyone?). High Risk big reward, but Wren has to play it safe as well and not give too much so that it does not block our money for other areas needing to be filled....but again, think of that rotation!!

Maybe I'm alone on an island here, but I think there's A LOT of posturing going on in this Jake Peavy thing. It seems to be the major hold up is Towers wants a fourth player from the Braves, and to this point Wren is completely balking at such a suggestion. Towers seems to be desperately trying to keep the Cubs and Yankees involved simply to leverage the Braves on this one. I don't think there's ANY doubt the Bravos have offered the best package. Escobar's name is easily the biggest one being thrown around by any team. Gorkys Hernandez might be the best prospect being thrown around. I mean the Cubs package reportedly includes Felix Pie, but man has his name lost steam over the past year and a half. His stock seems to be depreciating the way guys like Alex Escobar, Lastings Milledge, and (Braves fans will remember this one) Wilson Betemit's stock plummeted from "sure thing" prospect to middle of the road guy.

You can't tell me that if the Cubs are unwilling to part with Samardijza that a package of Pie, Cedeno, Marshall is really competitive with what the Braves have offered. Nor can the Yanks really compete if they're not including the name Phillip Hughes. I know the Braves have refused to part with their big gun Hanson, but the rest of our young player base is SO much deeper than the other teams being mentioned.

By the same token, it seems Wren is posturing with his indications that he'll try to stay competitive for a Burnett or Lowe. It's hard to imagine us really shelling out the same cash as a Yankees or Red Sox for those types of guys...those teams just have bigger wallets and are willing to absorb risk a lot more than the Braves.

I hope that the chicken fight between Wren and Towers ends soon and these two reach a deal rather than trying to prove whose got the bigger balls.

I don't see a lot of value out there - maybe we should go with our young guns ala the marlins - maybe make some deals for some other young arms - as I recall it all started with Glavine ,Smoltz & Avery, basically young unknowns - two of them carried us for 14 years- any of these guys we are considering are near the breakdown stage - why throw the money away?

the braves would really be dumb to trade for peavy.it would cost the braves alot more than he is worth.look at derick lowe and brad penny.that would be a good 1-2 punch in the starting rotation.

He would be a tough choice with his health history, especially since Roger McDowell sends all of our pitchers to the DL.

the braves dont have the money to sign a.j they best bet is to trade for peavy and maybe signing oliver perez and maybe going after an adam dunn or maybe trading for jeramine dye or miguel tedaja if the peavy trade has escobar in the deal.

It's not Roger McDowell's fault our pitchers get hurt. That's the most ridicious thing I have ever heard. Pitchers got hurt when Leo was here too.

Sorry guys but it takes more than 1 year to rebuild a franchise. JS didn't leave FW with much to work with. The Teixeira trade was an awful mistake. If we had all those players back the Peavy deal would have been completed weeks ago.

If we don't get Peavy than we can say hello to 2010.

Also I feel we need to use our top draft pick on a college starting pitcher like the Giants did with Tim Lincecum in 2006. Lincecum pitched a total of 13 games in the minors.

braves need to keep the same package of yunel/gorkey/and morton or reyes on the table for the padres. they wont find anything better out there. yunel is a good player who hasnt even showed us everything he can do who is very cheap for the next few years. we shouldn't add anymore players to this deal(wont be necessary). im a little worried about peavy elbow but if we do land him, then we should be able to sign renteria for cheap(2 years between 12-14 mil) i love renteria in front of chipper! forget aj burnett who will spend half the time on his contract on the DL. i would rather sign lowe or garland, probably garland who you wont have to over pay for and can benefit from the switch to the NL. we aslo need that power bat! so we cant go out and splurge on AJ. i would stay away from ludwick, maybe go after dye, i dont know if Bay will be available or in a long shot Magglio but detriot will want a ton in return. maybe a package of prado/flowers/josh anderson can get us DYE or Maggs maybe throw in boyer for detriot since they seek some relief.

rotation would be: peavy/jurrjens/garland/campillo/hanson/
we get huddy back in august, if he can pitch well and hanson is really a stud like they say he is, we should be able to compete.
lineup would be: 1. schafer/blanco
2. renteria
3. chipper
4. magglio/bay/dye/
5.mccann
6.frenchy
7.kotchman
8.kelly(we can also use infante at 2b
for lefties)
smoltzy/soriano/gonzalez will be a gamble in the pen since the are all injury plagued but hopefully they stay healthy and we will need a lefty for the pen since ohman will get big bucks elswhere. let me know what you guys think!

Hey tradechipper, you might not be my first choice as GM is all I'm going to say about you. I don't think you were complaining too much about the texeira trade when that went down. Who wasn't excited about that, midway through last season still within striking range? Monday-morning quarterbacking is okay, but I think your assessment at least has to be correct if you do it.

I think the Braves really need to get a number 1 starter (i.e. Jake Peavy). If they were to trade for Peavy who would play shortstop? They need to keep the same offer they have for Peavy (they could probably afford to throw in a young outfielder either Jones or Anderson), and then go after Orlando Carbrea or Furcal to play short. As for needing a power hitting outfielder, what about Juan Rivera form LAA, he could be a cheaper option than some one like Manny. They also may be able to trade for someone like Jermaine Dye. Then that would leave room to sign another starting pitcher in the form of maybe Derek Lowe, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia, Oliver Perez or maybe even Carl Pavano if he could stay healthy. I would really like to see them sign a left handed starting pitcher, and probably the best lefty on the market not named CC would be Oliver Perez. I don't see Glavine pitching again and Hampton if he could stay healthy wouldn't be a bad option because he seems to want to stay in ATL.

I think the Braves should go for a big blockbuster deal with Peavy, Adrian Gonzalez and Kahlil Greene coming to Atlanta in return for Yunel Escobar, Casey Kotchman, Kelly Johnson, Jojo Reyes or Charlie Morton, and Blaine Boyer or Manny Acosta. Throw in Gregor Blanco or Gorkys Hernandez if the Padres demand it. This not only gives the Braves the #1 starter they need, it also solves the power need with Gonzalez, clears second base for Martin Prado, and solves the missing SS issue with Greene replacing Escobar (although I wouldn't mind seeing Renteria back in Atlanta). Greene is also a logical #8 hitter or can flip-flop with Josh Anderson platooning in the leadoff spot. With Peter Moylan returning in June and Phil Stockman (check his 0.00 ERA with the club in 2008) hopefully returning from injury, we can afford to part with either Boyer or Acosta. Good deal for both teams, and Kotchman, a line-drive gap hitter, is ideal for San Diego's spacious ballpark. Sweetening the deal with Johnson should give the Padres enough incentive to pull the trigger.

I don't think trading Kotchman is exactly the smartest thing to do. He started off slow with Atlanta but that is expected. The Angels wanted him to be their first baseman for years to come before the opportunity for Teixeira came up. He has tremendous potential and we haven't even seen a full season of him yet. Give him a full season and then if he does bad we should discuss other options. Did I mention Kotchman is only 25? He is really young and isn't even in his prime yet.
