How CC offer could affect Jays' talks with Burnett

If there's one thing that the monster contract reportedly offered to free-agent CC Sabathia by the Yankees shows, it's that New York is going to go hard after pitching this winter. What else is new, right? So, if the Bombers are also targeting A.J. Burnett, there could be another mega deal headed his way in the next day or two.

According to multiple reports, Burnett and Derek Lowe are due to receive offers soon from the Yankees. This is bad news for the Blue Jays, who hope to retain Burnett and have also shown interest in Lowe. Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi has insisted since the end of this past season that his club isn't likely to come out on top in a bidding war.

A bidding war is precisely what Toronto is facing, though. New York's offer for Sabathia is reportedly in the neighborhood of $140 million over six years. In September, reports were that the Jays were prepared to offer Burnett a four-year deal worth $54 million. Burnett is arguably the top available starter behind Sabathia, so that offer is hardly going to cut it.

Toronto has yet to formally extend an offer to Burnett, who has suitors in the Braves and Orioles as well. The Jays plan on waiting to see what the pitcher is being offered by the competition before tabling their best attempt at re-signing him. The chances of Toronto accomplishing that goal appear slim at this point.

Toronto, which has also been reported to have interest in Brad Penny, Ryan Dempster and possibly Ben Sheets, doesn't have the resources to outspend its richer division rivals. Last winter, the Jays nearly pulled off a trade that would've netted San Francisco's Tim Lincecum, this year's National League Cy Young winner. The Jays may look to the trade market again this offseason in their hunt for rotation help.

Hmmm 6 years and 140m starting offer from the yankees ..... remind you thats the starting point of negotiatins and likely to go higher and the starting point is already more than santanas 6 at 137m ....... hes going to the yankees ...id even put money on this one and i dont have much...lol

Sounds like the Yankees will get C.C., as much as I would like to see him with the Dodgers. I cannot see the Dodgers or any team matching that offer.
That should be the one and only bid for the best pitcher this off season.......
C.C., Cali will still be here after your Yankee contract expire!
Enjoy the Bronx

I love the Yankees' intensity going into this offseason. One thing I love is how they're actually trying to get younger and not just with quantity but quality too. Lowe isn't that young but is still proven to be a fairly solid back of the end rotation guy. I still would love to see Teixeira in pinstripes. Swisher is a fairly good acquisition but I'm just a little unsure of last year's stats. The power was there but the average was just embarrassing. I say put him in center, trade Matsui to the Mariners for some bullpen help and prospects, put Nady in left, resign Abreu, and have Damon DH. Abreu provides a great presence in that lineup with his patience, power, and good average. And being that every other year A-Rod has MVP type stuff, he'll hit the homers like he did in 07 providing more runs. One last thing for them to do:
STRENGTHEN THAT BENCH!!! I love Eric Hinske. He would be the kind of young and loose guy that the Yankees need.
Not all of this stuff is going to happen. I think that Teixeira will wind up with either the Angels or Baltimore and Matsui will most likely not be traded. But these are just some hypothetical things.
Hope to see the Yankees late in October of 2009...not on the golf course!!!

get aj burnett, dereck lowe and oliver perez instead

I completely forgot about Perez. If we got him, Sabathia, and Burnett our starting rotation would be amazing!

The Yankees need to get Sabathia at all costs, they can't count on there kids strictly because they are not that good. Hughes, and Kennedy are not ready and Joba has'nt proved he can pitch 200 innings so Sabathia is the best option. An Swisher is gonna play First Base, he hit .219 last year, what we don't have some other guy to hit .219 ? Go out and get Teixeira and his .300 B.A. and by the way he works a walk and hits in the clutch like the old Yankees did in the late 90's. Also Orlando Hudson is a hard nose 2nd Baseman who could replace Cano, who could be traded for a Centerfielder like David DeJesus from K.C. along with maybe a young starting Pitcher. Clutch hitting and starting Pitching is important for us to stay just even with Tampa Bay and Boston R Canell

Yankee's can have Burnett. He had one good year out of 3 in Toronto, not suprisingly his contract year. This guy has had way too many injuries in the past, and he isnt getting any younger. I really wonder how long his power arm is going to hold up. Cause once the power is gone there isnt much else this guy can do. As a Jays fan I say good riddance to Burnett, the grass isnt always greener buddy.

After three years they are finally going after pitchers next season should be a better year.

October don't seem to be the same without the Yankees so they decided to spend money where it counts this year and thats on the pitching staff. You can have all the sluggers you want but it don't matter if you can't stpo the other team from hitting.

This is what really bother me about the stupid Yankees...there is something good on the free agency and they want em all ...first of all seems like everybody forgot how yankees top the free angency with ridicolous offers before like for example...jamie wright revived his carrer for just one season thanks to the pitching staff in Atlanta and what happend the yankees want em all ...the result ..a big contract worth of sh!@#$ ...other names like..Pavano..Giambi... what they did for the team?? NOT A THING ... big contracts for nothing...they want everything in the trade market...Randy Jhonson ..Abreu...Nady..and what they did for the team??? NOT A THING ...is stupid...and tell me what happened with that super stupid contract the give to the good ol Clemens for one year?? NOTHING...no mention the big fiasco named ALEX RODRIGUEZ and i put it in capital letters for all to remember that since they adquire him they just going down hill... a line up that include damon, jeter, giambi, alex, abreu, matsui(the only good thing happened there) posada and cano didn t do **** for them ..what make u think they will be a dynasty again?? no FARM SYSTEM thats the key for your failure, pressure and stupidity....dont think that Peavy would be the same pitcher in the American League, AJ Burnett spend more time in the DL than off of it ... and Lowe is old ...dont think beacuase you take everything away from everybody like always you r going to win...JETER is downhill at this point of his carrer and that all you count on it ...yankees sucks ....

Raymond I'm gonna have to disagree with you. Many people don't like the Yankees for this reason which is somewhat understandable, but is also a little annoying. Jaret Wright not Jamie was a bust. You're definitely right there. The Yankees going after everyone on the free agent market is called aggressiveness. Something that they've lacked since the late 90's when they won World Series left and right. Abreu and Nady have been great additions to the club. They hit for singles and not homeruns every time they're up and they drive the count deep. A-Rod still puts up good numbers even when he doesn't have MVP years. Matsui is not the only good thing because he's been injured the past two years. But when he's healthy he's a definite threat. They've got a very talented farm system and guys who are on the rise and will help them in the near future from A-AAA. Burnett, Lowe, and Sabathia are in like the top 6 for most wins in the past three years. So they are proven to be pretty darn good and the Yankees see it. Jeter is not going downhill. He is still probably the best captain and is still very good, hitting in the .290's. His power of course is not there and his glove isn't the same. But he's still Derek Jeter. Yankees will come back. Good luck to whatever team you root for. Hope to see them in October.

With all this talk of big spending for long term deals you have to wonder when the first owner's $$ crash like the stock market will hit. Then cities/tax payers will be asked for bailout because "WE DIDN'T SEE IT COMING". Does MLB watch to see if $$'s are there to back up the big mouth's for long term deals? Do sports writers care? The next problem facing MLB owners may not be a strike, it is them! Every time a big budget team plays a smart budget team - guess who I chear for.

Drummernc92....i like your thinking! You know exactly what your talking about. Raymond_pr is a numb nuts and has no idea what he is talking about...he must be a Royals fan. We can understand your frustration Raymond, no being in the playoff the past 24 years or so. If you don't like the yankees...then go off the ******* page! Anyway, they Yankees have been making smart moves for the past 2 years. Nady and Marte are great pick ups...Nady is young, great bat, and arm. Marte is a little older, but where can you find a lefty reliever that throw nasty stuff. Swisher might have similar offenses numbers to Giambi, but he is younger and is better in the field, and more flexibilty. Going after these pitchers is smart. There farm system is very strong...Raymond, i'm sure you know this. See Joba, Coke, Hughes, Gardner, Acevas. Thank you!

The only thing I agreed with Raymond was the fact that in the past the Yankees have eagerly gone after players with only one good season in their belt. I don't think C.C. or Teixeira would be busts in anyway though, but maybe they should look into Burnett and Lowe as far as how much money they want to offer. I'm not questioning their talent, it's just in the end will the contract be proportional to what they bring to the club And that's my problem with the Yankees, over spending on players to lure them into their team, and then I laugh when they don't win the ship or even go to the playoffs.

Burnett is going to see C.C join the Yankees and want to join too. You don't think that will be the best way to get a Ring!!!! He knows that if it is Wang, C.C, himself (Burnett), Joba and Pettite...they won't have on of the most dominate rotations in baseball?!

Burnett already has a ring!

I know, anyone that dares to question the amount of money being spent, is accused of sour grapes. But when does it stop? And how is one team having such an unbelievable amount of money to spend, good for the game?

I have been a baseball fan for more than 50 years, and it just gets so depressing to always know that my team doesn't stand a chance. They have a more than adequate budget compared to everyone else, except the red sox and the yankees. And yet, they have no hope before the season starts. Is that good for the game? I don't think so.

One day, when the Steinbrenners walk away, and they will like all owners do, what damage will they have done. What fans will be left besides fans of the large payroll teams.

Until MLB institutes a proper salary cap, the fans will continue to drift away. And that is the saddest part of this entire mess. And I don't need to be reminded that the Rays have a payroll of $48 million or so. They had 10 years where they stunk. Who wants to watch their team go through that?

The new financial reality is about to hit, and it is going to get ugly, and yet the Yankees as usual, continue to spend like they deserve to have every star in baseball.

So I guess the question is. Does MLB want to see the Yankees go hard after all the decent free agents & help bring up salary's even more, or should they be looking at ways of creating more parity, like a proper salary cap.
To be fair though, its not just the Yankees, as there are a couple other teams that are responsible for this rediculous salary escalation as well. If I were a Yankees fan, I'd probably be excited about the prospect of acquiring a couple of these very expensive A list pitchers to help an already star studded team get even better. The problem is that fairy tails like the Rays $48 payroll will very soon be a thing of the past. Just imagine how much The Rays payroll is going to be in a year or so if they choose to retain there stars (not likey) & guess who'll come knocking when the bidding starts.
I say, what's more important. Having baseball to look forward to each spring, or the prospect of nothing at all when the fans stop paying & baseball goes into a recession, like the rest of the economy.

I am absolutely shocked that the Yankees continue to screw around with first base, rather than inking Texiera to 4 or more years to completely set that position from day one in the new stadium. Swisher, nonetheless, just might surprise some folks in this lineup, though. Suddenly finding himself in a potent, world-famous lineup like the Bombers, he might find that spark of pride necessary to bring a player to the ultimate level of play that we as fans crave so much, yet never seem to see quite enough of. All we really need is Sabbathia, Texiera, and one more ace starter. I still would like to see us pick up Tim Lincecum, as his arm is nothing short of alien, man.

like i sayid 2 weeks ago cc is going to the yankees, and sure let them get burnett too, thas two pick for the jays and another carl pavano in the making, the jays have some money, get dempster or bartolo colon as a 3rd starter, freddy garcia IF he's ok, ponson? as a 4 stringer then you got sheets and wolf, you don't have to spend 20 m a year for potential , and go get your bat, how about sexson? thas potential and cheap too, no one is gona give him tons of money and rocco he would be nice in left field he can run and a decent bat too, raul ibaƱez if you want to spend the money, but if i was j.p i would work on getting greene at ss, and end this revolving door once and for all, and i still think that snider or lind can play first base, but thas just me lind is 5-11 240? he can move but for how long before he makes the move later on in his carrier and take him longer to learn the position (eric hinske) and just be an utility guy, and don't forget the rays made it all the way to the world series with young pitching and the jays got lots of them so don't be afraid to put them on, the jays got lots of talent in the minors give then a chance, take a gamble as long the kids aren't getting hurt let them play.

sorry i meant snider about the weight not that it will hurt his production (fielder)
