Good Wood
The Cubs most likely have said goodbye to Kerry Wood. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry met this past weekend with the right-hander, who saved 34 games this season, his first as a closer. Wood is looking for a three or four-year deal, and for more money than the Cubs are able to pay him, considering the team has other, more pressing needs. Teams interested in a closer will be lining up to talk to Wood, who is a free agent. He has pitched his entire career with the Cubs, beginning in 1998 when he won Rookie of the Year.
The Cubs now project Carlos Marmol as their closer in 2009 and helped the bullpen Thursday when they acquired reliever Kevin Gregg from the Marlins. Gregg can be used in either a set-up or closer role.

I think this is a big mistake for the Cubs and a sad day for Chicago. Hendry and Lou both came out and said that this team only needs minor tweaks after winning 97 games. Now the All Star who saved 34 games and played in the WC in '98, NLCS in '03 and both short NDS's in '07 and '08 will be wearing a different uniform. Marmol and Gregg combined will be hard to remain as consistent as Wood was last year. I sure hope we get the Consitent LH bat and Dempster back if Wood is surely gone!
I'm still holding out hope that Wood will remain with the city and team that has cheered for him through thick and thin.

This was a dumb Move -- seriously.
You only need a left handed bat, and to re-sign two of your best pitchers -- and you do this? Really? Not to say Gregg Doesn't have wicked stuff (fast ball/change up,) but jesus, you're going to part with wood and dempster? They need to re-sign him before other teams dish out WAY MORE money for him. This just sucks..

Not to make it seem like I'm selling Wood short but I believe if the Mets can't land either K-Rod or Fuentes, Wood could be a legitamit step up from Luis Ayala. If I were Omar Meniya I would throw a Deal on the table for all three and see who bites first.

First, Chicago needs to let Dumpster go!! $50 Million? The guy has had only two winning seasons in a long career with a life time era of 4.50. He was a joke as a closer and pitched for a contract last year. He is no better than a number 3 starter at best. Trade for Peavy, give Marshall a shot, get Bobby A from NYY, ditch Lee, and give Big Lou one more year to do something. Manager of the year? We have not won a postseason game since '03. We might as well be 20-142 if we can't win in the post season. Kerry Wood is probably asking way to much to stay but as far as I am concerned he is part of Chicago and he and us have stuck by each others side for years, not to mention all the good he and his wife do each year for charity in chicago. I will promise you that 09' will be a dark year for our Cubbies.

The cubs did a great move letting Wood go i like Marmol being the closer is younger and has more talent and now has experience. Dempster must be gone also he wont be the same next year the cubs must try and bring Peavy on a trade. Please find a team that would like Jason Marquis. Sign bobby abreu and if they cant sign Raul Ibanez.

This trade is smart, look at it from Hendry's spot. You can't give Wood the money he is will get from other teams, so why not go and get another solid reliever to make up for it. Marmol is ready to go and has had two seasons in a roll where he has posted All-Star numbers, he's ready. If this is a move to get Peavy then good let's do it, but if not its still a good trade to make up for not having the money to keep Wood. I'm predicting that the Cubs will resign Dempster, even though i would rather have Peavy, and they will go and sign a left handed bat to stick in Right Field. As long as the Cubs do not trade away Micah Hoffpauir we will be alright, he is the next Josh Hamilton.

I don't know how many male teams could perform without Wood!!! Let's face it though what is the difference between 100 million and 200 million. I know 100 million, but how much money does one person need? I will miss Kerry, but Kerry could stay for less money if he truly loved us! Remember Kerry we gave you a chance when no one else Wood! Kerry, don't let the door hit you in the @#$ on the way out. Kerry your leaving a nation not just a city!

Hey Auball20, unless I slept through all of 1998 Kerry Wood did not pitch in the World Series!! My grandma wasnt even alive the last time the Cubs made the series.

Letting Wood go is sad, for sure. But we have a fantastic guy to fill that hole in Marmol. With our starting rotation, however, we don't have someone waiting in the wings. If Dempster goes, we are back to piecing together a starting rotation (a la 2007). We don't need Peavy in lieu of Dempster. We need peavy in addition to dempster. Let's dump our 4 or 5 guy, not our no. 1 or 2 guy.
