Giambi back to the Bay Area?
For those who like to read smoke signals, the Oakland Athletics' hiring of Bobby Alejo as a strength coach could be a precursor to a deal for Jason Giambi.
Giambi became a free agent on Tuesday when the Yankees bought out his $22 million option for 2009, and he could entertain a return to the Bay Area, where he began his career. Alejo, the A's strength coach from 1993 through 2001, followed Giambi to the Bronx in 2002 and was initially permitted to travel with the team and provided full access.
The 37-year-old Giambi has said that he is hoping for a multi-year deal that would permit him to continue playing past his 40th birthday. He exceeded expectations this year for the Yankees, remaining healthy and on the field to make 112 starts at first base, his most since 2001 with Oakland. The Yankees haven't ruled out a return but figure to investigate other options first.
