Giambi a Ray?
George King of the New York Post speculated out loud that Jason Giambi could be a good fit for the Rays. While initially this might sound like something out of the blue, I would not dismiss such speculation.
The Rays are down two left-handers since they did not pick up Cliff Floyd's option and Eric Hinske is a free agent. As King points out, Giambi remains a productive player after hitting 32 homers and driving in 96 runs in 2008 with an an on-base percentage of .373. In 65 career games at Tropicana Field, Giambi has homered 11 times and driven in 48 runs.
At age 38, Giambi will not command near the salary he once played for, but that's still not to say his pricetag won't be too much for the payroll-minded Rays, who are also believed to have some interest in Pat Burrell and Milton Bradley. So it's likely to be determined by how the market sorts out this offseason. If the market is depressed, all three could definitely be on the Rays' radar.

Terrible idea! I don't want that damn 'roid monkey playing in Tampa Bay!!! I also don't want to see the Rays turn in to the Yankees where they overpay for aging players that are past their prime and ruin the organization. The Rays had a good year...why ruin it on some bonehead like Giambi? The only thing worse would be if they signed Bonds.

no way no way . steroids and all the junk that will follow. our team is clean and does not need tainting by a has been.
Remember Canseco, Vaughn et al. I hear often that the Rays can't afford a real player . Why not ? Dig deep. This deal would be as bad as Ramirez , Bonds . Losers with an attitude. The young Rays need leadership by example.

I agree that would be a terrible idea. I dont want him around my younger players. I agree our team is clean & we dont need a person like him.

I don't even like the Rays infact hate the Rays as much as the Yankees, but for the good of Baseball no team should pick up the Steriod injected Greaseball. They have Good young emphasize Good even Great young players no need for him. Plenty of good enough DH/1B. Rays Don't do this to your self. Burrell, Bradley are much better fit for the young Rays Go SOX!!!!!

If Giambi was worth it, the Yankees would have kept him as DH. If the Rays want to gamble on an older player as DH to replace Cliff Floyd, better to look for someone like Dmitri Young. The other alternative is to keep Rocco for that role.

To pcraysfan: You mentioned above, "I also don't want to see the Rays turn in to the Yankees where they overpay for aging players that are past their prime and ruin the organization." I am not a Yankees fan but a Phillies fan; and you need to recognize that teams like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, etc., "financially support" the Rays, the Marlins, the Rockies (et al.) through revenue-sharing because those cities do not support their home teams. In fact, the Rays were the biggest abuser of revenue-sharing, which is supposed to be used for player retention. Because there is no MLB oversight, the Rays pocketed millions of dollars for their organization when it was supposed to be used for players' salaries. So please do not insult the Yankees or any other wealthier team because your Rays derive huge benefits from revenue-sharing!

LMFAO! You people are funny! I am a Yankees fan, and i like the way the Rays did things. They brought up talent, without over spending, and got a power house. Giambi is going back to Oakland, or the Mariners. He is not staying in the AL east. He is a good club house guy....but he does not deserve 16 mil a year

This actually could become a good deal for the team if he does a few things. I can tell you one thing, he would be a great left-handed bat, but we have to keep the firstbaseman mitt away from his hand at all costs.
If he gives the Rays a AL-East discount so he can put it to the Yankees 17 times a year he might find a home. Besides that, he might have to do some plate discipline, but Steve "Hendo" Henderson did a miracle with Dioner Navarro in the last 2 years.
Good pure DH's are not plentiful anymore. There are only a few out there as free agents and they will cost you to get them period.

lisa.craig@arkema.com,
sweet conspiracy theory. The rays are secretly pocketing money without anybody knowing it. The team has had no choice other than to keep it because they did not have a fan base and have to even out a balance sheet. The teams you mentioned have been around for forty or more years and are established teams with established fan bases. This is the first winning season for the Rays, so give the area a chance to build a fan base. Losing will cost any team attendence. The Pirates are in a big market sports city, but they had fifteen years of losing and don't draw anyone, so I guess they are stealing money from the Yankees too since they never retain any players? The Rays salary will be around 55 to 60 million next year after all of their arbitration cases are settled or signed, which is more than twice the amount it has been at for the first ten years of existence. Pena, Longoria, Shields, Kazmir, Crawford all have been taken care of long term. That is not considered player retention? So please don't point the finger at the Rays and say they are doing nothing with the Yankees and Mets free money. Plus, pcraysfan was not even attacking the yankees spending, rather their pention for signing over the hill, defensive liabilities like Giambi, Damon, Matsui, Posada, Cano(not old but awful signing), Abreau. Keep the money rolling in though. Thanks!

damon batted .300, matsui is a clutch player, posada had a career year in 07 then he was injured, and cano has a beautiful level power swing. you are a closed minded BANDWAGON rays fan. get your facts straight.

I am sure Posada will have a big bounce back year as a 38 year old catcher. Cano has a beautiful swing, but is the worst second baseman in the game. Matsui has to DH. Giambi can't throw. Hence "defensive liabilities." I never said any of them can't swing the bat, they suck in the field, are old, and declining. I have been a proud rays fan since I went to the first game in the franchise's history. Don't really care if you don' t believe me.

I meant Damon can't throw.

No, the Rays are not going to sign a washed up has been like Giambi. That is not how this team works. All you Yankee fans who want to live in the past and argue how great your players once were should look at how teams are built now in 2008-2009, not how they were built in the 90's. The Rays and Phillies were loaded with players who came up thru there organizations. This is the new economics of baseball. When the Yankees start spending money on their farm system instead of over the hill, out of shape players, they might have a chance to compete.
And as for the guy who was moaning about revenue sharing... clubs that get money from the higher revenue teams do not have to spend that money on 35+ year old has beens. Developing a farm system and spending money on that and locking up young players in the system to multi-year deals is the way to go. Oh, and since when has Pittsburgh been a high revenue area for baseball?

For about thirty years when they were winning until around '93 when the Pirates organization started to committ suicide. I blame Sid Bream.

No ..we sure don't need Giambi .. our team is clean and an over the hill druggy is not a good thing .. our guys have done such a great job .. there are wonderful, talented guys out there without adding bad karma to the Rays!!1

This would be awful. Don't ruin this brilliant young team with a guy like Giambi. Veterans are great, but go out for the classy true vets like Cliff Floyd. Rays are a strong and growing organization and they are only going to get better, unless they pull this kind of deal. The Rays show how baseball should be played, and how great teams are put together. With raw talent and putting their efforts into their farm systems, so their young players learn how to grow into better ballplayers. This would be a disaster. The Yankees deserve to keep him.

The Rays had ONE good year...and no you "fans" have the balls to say that the Yankees can't play. Everytime i watch a Yankee vs. Ray game...there are more Yankee fans then Rays fans. In fact, there are more people who go to spring training games, then a Rays regular season game. Don't you guys have a sound machine at the Trop...to make it sound like people are in the building. Go to the playoffs more then once, then you can come onto blogs and starting giving your team props. I believe the Rays are a good ball club, but to say the Yankees are old, and can't play with them is ridiculous. Check back to see what your win-loss was to the "old" Yankees in the 08' season. I believe you guys had a losing record against the Yankees. Don't forget we had many injuries. We still finished with 89 wins. I'd like to see the Rays win 89 games, with injuries to 3 starting pitchers, your catcher, and DH. Thank you. Know your facts...before you write ****!!!! You guys all jumped on the band wagon...once they got into the playoffs.

Injuries, like Longoria for two months, Pena for a month, Bartlett for a month, Baldelli six months, Navarro for the first three weeks (thanks to Yankee stadium), Floyd for two months, Crawford for three months, Kazmir for the first month, Garza for a month, Percival for two to three months.... Nice call about the Rays not having injuries. I agree 3 starting pitchers is worse, but it's not like the Rays were healthy throughout, plus Kennedy and Hughes are not proven, Pavano does not count, and Joba only missed like three starts. The Yankees are still a good team, but I am sure aliboye20 would agree that they need to get younger than they are now. I live in New York, and most of they yankee fans agree. They will certainly be better when C.C., Tex, Lowe, and Cameron are on the roster..... F

I agree with youHadlow22. We need to get younger, and that is why i am for the Swisher trade. He can play a couple of different positions. No need for Cameron or anyone...if they went and got McClouth...that is a different story for CF. Def...go grab C.C, Tex, Burnett...

Wow, relax Rays fans ( all 12 of you) , you will learn baseball, just be patient, and watch the Yankees and you too can learn. Bashing Giambi is a sign of your lack of knowledge. Jason is a player loved by everyone in the baseball world. Now don't get started about cliff floyd, another lack of baseball knowledge, as he has alot of stuff in his baseball closet. the young plaers you say are locked up?, just means that when their contracts start esculating, they must be traded. probably starting in 09 with CC.

And by the way, it is estimated that over 75 percent of ALL baseball players ( majors and minors ) were doing enhansing drugs. Jason was just the only one who manned up and apoligized. so as you understand baseball more and ring your bells less, you will love baseball for what it is, not what you want it to be. no better than 3erd in 09 for the Rays...sorry folks

I find it really ironic that someone on here was complaining about revenue sharing and how the Rays were pocketing the money and then you get two other morons who want the Yankees to go out and get CC, Texeira, and Lowe/Burnett. I'll stick with the way the Rays have built their team...from within...and continue to laugh at the fact that the Yankees will, once again, attempt to buy a championship. Lame.

You know, I know Green Bay Packer fans...they don't talk non stop about their glory years in the past. I am a Chicago Bear fan... I don't spend any time talking about the 30's and 40's in football. Bulls, Celtics and Lakers fans- the same. Why is it that all the Yankee fans can do is crow about teams from long ago? Look, DiMaggio, Mantle, Ruth, Gehrig, Berra are long past. Yes, it was the greatest dynasty of all time...but it is long past. These teams were built by ownership/GM management that in their time were ahead of the field. The Yankees of today are built by guys who only know how it used to work. Evidently their fans are the same. Giami is not over-the-hill? Come on... get real. Oh, and by the way, when your team is old, you are going to have to expect more injuries... don't whine about them... it is a product of how that team is construsted, not bad luck.

I am a Rays fan and I was born in Fl and have lived here all my life. When I was young there were no MLB teams in FL. I was a Tiger fan mostly because they played Spring Training games in my area. I became a Rays fan when they first became a franchise. It is a shame that every time you read comments every one is bashing each other. I am a fan of baseball. Right now the Rays build their team different than the Yankees. Doesn't make our way right and the Yankees way wrong. If we had the money the Yankees have who is to say we wouldn't do it different. Just enjoy the game.

Look, I have no beef with the actual Yankee players. I left the Yankees when they started buying pennants. ANYONE who has enough $$'s, can try to buy their way into the playoffs. And that's the Yankees game. I mean A-Rod makes more than all the Rays put together. What does that tell you? And what did it get them???
And the total beauty of this, is that the Rays and their management, play the purest form of baseball. They play for the love of the game and don't have to buy their way into it.
Take a lesson, FrankenSteinBrenners: you can't buy morals, integrity, chemistry and the will to win no matter how many $$'s you throw at it.
That's why the Rays have set a new marker in baseball. And that's why the Rays were and are the best team in the American League.
PS - Joe Maddon is the best manager in baseball. Not because of his ability to win games. It's his ability to understand people down to their core, and to truly believe in them on an individual basis. He is sincere and an excpetional human being. And that my friends, is the key to life. You don't just buy that.
