Eyre back, Moyer next?
With Scott Eyre resigned, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. turned his attention toward retaining 16-game winner Jamie Moyer, the two sides continue to focus on dollars and years. It is believed that the soon-to-be 46-year-old is seeking a multiyear deal. The chances are 50-50 that Moyer will agree to a deal before testing the open market, though he's made it clear that Philadelphia is his first choice. He grew up in Sellersville, Pa., and attended Souderton High School.
On the Pat Burrell front, Amaro said he has contacted the left fielder's agents and expressed the Phillies' interest in bringing him back. It is doubtful that dollars or length were discussed in those initial discussions, and Burrell will likely be available to all teams by this weekend. If Burrell returns, it will likely have to be with a short-term contract, and for less money than he can get elsewhere, i.e. a hometown discount. -- Ken Mandel

The club would be crazy to consider a long term deal for either player. Moyer is 46 and will lose the ability to get people out consistently in the near future. Burrell is an albatross and really should pay the Phillies back some of the money that he extracted from them for grossly subpar seasons. 14 million is a joke. If he wants a long term deal, go to the American League and be an inconsistent DH. The club has a lot of hungry players that will play for less money and bring genuine enthusiasm to their work. Burrell never wanted to seriously work on his game. He didn't have to, he had a guaranteed contract. Send him packing so you don't repeat the same mistake twice....

Moyer is projected to be a type A free agent. I'd feel much more comfortable getting the draft picks and signing some bargain fourth starter than another year or two of Moyer. I think this season was a blessing, but is so unlikely to repeat that it's not worth it. Make Happ the 5th starter, and we look all right; certainly no worse.

I don't think I would come back for less money. So I guess we'll say solong to Pat the Bat.

Pat the Bat was streaky, but what Phillie wasn't? If the Phillies can resign him for three years at $30 to $36 M, what leftfielder with his numbers could they get for that price? Besides, he does help sell tickets. I know there where years or partial years when he was boo'd by the fans, but again waht Phillie wasn't? The young ladies love sitting in LF and watching Pat, and we old guys love sitting in LF and watching the young ladies watching Pat.
He won some key games for the Phils in both the regular season and in the post season, and his double set up the winning run in the final WS game. He certainly has not been the superstar that we all hoped for, but again, what Phillie has? None of them are perfect, they all have their achillies heels, but why mess up the chemistry when it is finally working well.
Moyer is a good re-sign, too. Especially if he is willing to do just one year. If not, maybe two is not too much of a stretch, but he deserves a return, even if Happ eventually replaces him as a starter. BTW, let Eaton go at any cost.

K first off Happ could be the fifth starter tmboye even if they do resign moyer. they have a four man rotation right now and kendrick and happ are fighting for it. Personal i like Kendrick over happ.

Sign both Pat & Jamie to 2 year deals for less money.
Give ( HAMELS, VICTORINO, HOWARD, WERTH ), long term deals, this keeps the main core of the team together for at least 3 more years. Or they could ask Jamie to become a Player - Coach. Just ask Happ, Kendrick, and Hamels what he has done and taught them.

I agree completely with lesump@ptd.net about all points. The Phillies must put up the right $ for all their core players. Although I highly doubt that Pat will accept 2 years. Less money yes, but 2 years I doubt it. He wants 3 years or more (didn't you see him holding up 3 fingers at the parade after people were chanting "2 more years"?).
One question for anyone: what is Ruiz' story? Does he have a long-term contract? I think he should be getting at least a $million per year considering how much he has improved.

GET THEM BOTH BACK WE NEED THEM! WE WOULD OF NEVER WON WITHOUT THEM THEY ARE A BIG PART OF THE PHILLIES. hopefully pat will come back we need him everybody loves him. but if he goes u need a guy to replace his 30 and 90 everyyear! Rocco baldeli cant do that. so they shouldn't event think of him!!!!!!! go phillies i know they will make the right descision

I think the role of Jamie Moyer is much underrated. He's not only a great pitcher (still), but also has a lot of influence at the young pitchers (and catchers) like Hamels and Happ. That makes him so valuable. He let them play better. He should be signed to a two-year deal and make him pitchingcoach after his contract.

Who is out there and available to replace 30 hrs and 90+ RBI's a season? Those are Burrell's numbers. He won't make the spectacular plays in LF, but he will make the routine ones, and he'll make a good throw to the right base. Philly fans often overlook their quality players (in all sports) until they're gone. Then they have "Seller's remorse," and they idolize the departed. (See Dick Allen, for instance.) By the way, Matt Hollidays's numbers away from Coors Field were 1 hit every 10 days different from Burrell's, yet Holliday was looked upon as a savior. Talk about the grass is greener!

some of you people are just plain NUTS. we absolutely should bring back moyer. why? two reasons 1. he won 16 games and can still be a good pitcher, even if he ended up our fifth starter. and 2. most importantly COLE HAMELS. cole loves moyer. if you think for one second that cole hamels success is not even slightly attributed to jamie moyer being like a pitching coach to him you are once again nuts. both lefties, both throw amazing change ups. MOYER MUST BE SIGNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also agree with lesump - Moyers value is indeed so much more than a third or fourth pitcher. You can see Hamels respects his opinion and you are getting both a mentor and a pitcher than can get wins two out of three times (better than Myers this past year). And Pat deserves a contract - hopefully 2-3 years maybe $32-36 mil? Victorino more than makes up for the fielding that Pat lacks - although I think he is still getting a bum rap there too (can you say Howard?) We need a hometown discount Pat!

I hope both Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrell are back with the Phillies next year. Jamie led the team in wins and his experience and class are invaluable. Pat Burrell is also a class guy who contributes RBI's every year. Few or no fans know what these two contribute in the clubhouse but I suspect their impact there is as valuable as their on-field performance. I am a life-long fan but I don't pretend to know all the factors which go into making the decisions to retain ore let go of players so I wish the front office and these two players the best! Whatever the results, Thanks Pat and Jamie for your past efforts. Congratulations to the whole organization for a FANTASTIC year.

Ok , So i know Pat is not the best, but like others said who else are you going to get that can put up those kind of numbers that Pat does.. No One.. we are still paying for the mistake of Thome, What a waste he was.. I say this if you have a good thing why are you going to destroy it, give Pat three years, he will take less money for three years , and as for Jamie bring him back too, I was worried about Jamie pitching in game 4 of the World Series , all along i said that the phillies would win in 5 at home but i really thought that the game jamie pitched would have been the one we lost, we he sure did prove me wrong, Jamie went out there and gave his all, he is an Awesome pitcher that can teach these young guys some tricks, I say bring him back as well, and we go on to win another CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! Also, and i know this has nothing to do with this blog I think Charlie should have gotten the NL Manager Award, What better Manager then a Manger who takes your team to the World Series and WINS!!! CHARLIE YOU HAD MY VOTE!!!! AND SO DO PAT AND JAMIE!!! BRING THEM BACK!!!! WE NEED THEM!!!

LET BURELL STAY I might be a kid but i like him as a player! He is a great player both in Spring Training, Regular Season, and the Post Season. He might be slow but who cares he is great in LF and great at hitting too! So give him some slack. Ok? I mean he is worth alot of money because he good he shouldn't be woth nothing because he slow think about his numbers and his hits and walks!!!! Did u ever see how many walks he gets!!! ALOT and thats good because that shows you that the pitcher are afraid of Pat The Bat! So see what I'm trying to say. LEt him stay ok? I am a kid but i support all phillies!

You have to bring PAT and JAMIE back. Jamie not only lead the Phils in wins but his influence on the younger players is invaluable. You know you will get 6-7 strong innings every time he pitches. As for Pat where will you get the 30-90 from if you let him go. Give him a 3 year deal. And now that Holliday is no longer on the market signing Burell is a must. Sure he won't make the spectacular plays in LF but neither did Luzinski, The Sarge or Incavilia. And who got hit the double to lead to the winning run in Game 5. Bring Jamie and Pat back. They deserve to be here. Thanks for a great season PHILS.

Moyer is the "cause & effect" guy for a lot of games. His positive mentor-factor abilities are reason enough to sign him....and eventually when he's had enough ...what a fantastic Pitching Coach!

Hey everyone, we are "World Champions" and I agree in keeping this team together. I don't care who is 46 or struggles mid way through the year, it's the personalities that work together that win Championships! These guys have each others back, even when one of them is struggling. Keep the team the way it is and build your farm system, END OF STORY!

Jamie Moyer negotiated his own contract with the Mariners. A three year deal that addressed his advancing age (Six Years ago I believe). It stiputlated that he only got his full salary if he pitched 200 innings a year. He got his full pay. How many innings did he pitch for Philly this year? 196.1. He's never been overpowering but don't discount that he's one of the brightest and best prepared pitchers in all of Baseball. Having an asset like Moyer to help young pitchers like Hamels far beyond the value of his impressive W/L ratio.

C'mon people, no one is disregarding Burrell's or Moyer's contributions in the past, but you don't give money away unless you believe the production will be there on the field...in the future. Burrell's second half was atrocious, sure his numbers over the last three years were good, he's a good/not great player, but he's declining, as pretty much every player does after 30. Bringing him back isn't a bad idea but it has to be a favorable deal for the Phils, not something you'll regret in August next year, when he's on an oh-for-30 stretch. Same with Moyer, love the guy, love his impact on the younger guys, but if you think Hamels needs any more mentoring, you're missing something; Moyer gets rocked against patient, veteran lineups, the sands are running out of the hourglass, if we bring him back, again, it has to be a favorable contract. I was praying for one last good start against the Rays, and he did it, very inspiring, but now we're talking about 30 good starts next year. If he goes 2-10 with a 5.00 ERA, his mentoring ability may not be worth it. Bringing either back is a roll of the dice, but unless there are better options, it may be the least risky play, at the right price.

The Phils winning a championship in the last year of Burrell's contract was a great ending, for him and them. Now they need to KEEP it an ending, unless Burrell settles for two years, which he won't. I've had enough of watching him lumber around in the outfield, and with his inconsistencies at the dish. I'm happy they were able to give him that great send off, now SEND HIM OFF already.
The Phillies need to do something they've never, ever done, not even once in their history, to my knowledge: develop a 20-20 corner outfielder. Replacing Burrell's numbers will be frankly impossible for 2009. But I still think you gotta make that move and live with the results. You may have to settle for a Baldelli platoon situation, and that's life.
Be nice to have Moyer back if the money is right. He is indeed a steadying influence in the clubhouse. But the money would have to be REALLY right -- the guy is 46 and has to be perfect with his command in order to get outs. Happ has to be given the opportunity to win a job in the rotation next Spring, period.

The need for mentoring doesn't end just because one wins an MVP Award -- if anything, mentoring needs to be stronger now than ever before. Moyer brings qualities to this team that cannot be measured but will be felt for years to come. Keep him pitching for as long as possible -- he will be his own best gauge as to when he is declining -- then a timely move into coaching. As for Pat, hate to lose the bat and the chemistry he brings to the team -- a big piece to the magical 2008 run. The fans love him, he wants to stay. Seems to me it's up to him to do the right thing -- exactly how much money does one need to make in a lifetime to be happy?!

I sincerely hope Pat and Jamie both stay. They have both given so much to the team. Pat may be inconsistent, but he helped them out a lot during both the regular season and post season. And even though Moyer is going to be 46, he's still got a good arm. I know that the Phils will make the right decision. I just hope that decision means Pat and Moyer both stay. The team wouldn't be the same without them.

Hello! We won the World )@)$#** Series!!
How soon you "fans" forget what Pat and Jamie did for this team!!
We wouldn't have had the same success without Pat's 33 home runs and his carrying the team through the first two months when Howard was slumping. Remember? Didn't Pat hit two homers to seal the deal in Milwaukee? Didn't he hit the game winning home run in the first NLCS game? Were you there? I was.
Moyer can pitch until he's 100 for all I care. 16 wins is hard to come by. Ask Johan Santana who had the same 16-7 record as Jamie. Jamie's durable (196 inning pitched), surprisingly athletic (Glove flip play the umpire botched by calling Upton safe), and most of all he's a mentor who can still pitch in the bigs. I'm sure if his production falls off, he'd be the first to admit and move on.
Stop bashing, people. Stop being Negadelphia fans. Let's try Posidelphia instead!!

The Phillies would crazy not to resign Burrell. He may have hot and cold streaks but tell me somebody on this team that was consistent this year or even last year. Howard only hits in the Last few months and doesn't do much in April or May. As for Jamie the guy won 16 games at the age of 45. He makes guys half is age look foolish when he pitches. Go Phillies.

The chemistry on this team is great. Why ruin it? The Phillies need to spend a few more dollars and do what you have to do. Pat may have been over payed in the past, however, what athlete isn't? He belongs here and for 10 million a year do you really think you can get better? Give him three years and give Jamie two. In the three years Moyer has been with this team he has pitched the same. He is in amazing shape and should be ok for at least one or two more years. Not to mention what he means to the team and the pitching staff. Time to spend some money and keep the core of this team as well.

Blue Sky/Outta da box thinking here, so bear with me -- we've all been conditioned to think that money is supreme, the ultimate motivator. But many of the guys that made things happen here this past year weren't making tons of dough. The genuine chemistry that levened, help "raise" and was "baked into" this 2008 squad comes along once upon a dream. What's "it" worth in $$$$? Priceless!!! Can we pay these guys what they're worth -- heck no!! Much of "it" was demonstrative selflessness - team first -- a little "leaven" goes a long way.- and it sure did go all the way! Most of us want to see this team (with "it") stay together forever or at least a few more years, huh? Pray, Pray, Pray they all Stay, Stay, Stay!!

It never ceases to amaze me the level of stupidity in these blogs. Let's be realistic...if the phils resign Burrell then kiss goodbye to either Howard or Hamels. They won't have the money to sign both of those players to a long-term deal. Moyer will be back but the Phils wont sign him to a deal longer than 2 years. And enough of this Moyer bashing anyway. The guy is 46 yrs. old and he led the world series champs in wins!!! Last time i checked that means something...so his production may decline a little next year..so what? Reward the guy for what he has done for this team and this city.

Thanks, but no thanks on the signing of Pat Burrell he will never get any better then what he is now, a guess hitter. Save the bucks and go in the market. It's pretty tuff we have to deal with another year of Jenkins. Cut off the talks with both Burrell and Moyer and chase down Holliday for a good three hole hitter. 1.J Rollins 2.C Utley 3.M Holliday 4. R Howard 5. J Werth 6.S. Victorino and so on. Plus we need to fix the catching problem too

Unfortunately in the world of sports, there is absolutely no loyalty. From owners to players, loyalty continues to lag far behind the constant issue of rising greed. I would love for Philadelphia to soar above the rest of the sporting world and reward the players who have made 2008 a wonderful season to remember. Those of us old enough to experience 1980 have waited nearly three decades for a repeat. Resigning Moyer for a few more years versus the 28 year wait...no comparison! Ask the Packer fans if they would like Favre back...oh wait, I am a Packer's fan (don't shoot me, I love the Eagles as well!)! Hell yes we would! So jiminpa1970, I agree with you wholeheartedly....Moyer can pitch in a Phillies' uniform forever if he likes. And Burrell may be past his prime (although Moyer seems to be just hitting his stride at 46) but I have gained a whole new respect for him these past few years. Watch him on the bench; no one gets more excited for his fellow teammates' success than Pat. Sentimental ideas? Hell yes my ideas are sentimental, but my family and I will take the joy of 2008 to our graves with an everlasting smile. Rollins said it best when he told a reporter that now, forever, they will be considered winners! Amen! Let all the winners be recognized next season on opening day. Sorry Taguchi, and thanks for your effort!

Every single person that said Pat doesn't work hard obviously does not follow the Philadelphia Phillies. Every time a player was interviewed this season about bringing Pat back, that player (even Utley said it once we all know how hard he works) said that Burrell was the hardest worker on the team. He spends the most time in the cage, has a rigorous off season regimine, and tries his hardest every single day. This is not my opinion, it is HIS TEAMMATES. So if you honestly say he doesn't work hard you're just another ignorant fan without looking at the facts.
Burrell has a priceless asset to his name: he gets Philly. Its safe to say that only about 25% of all professional athletes have what it takes to play in this city, much less play with the appreciate for its fans and vice versa. Pat gets it. He has come to embrace this town and how its fans are and that is something we have to cherish as Philly fans. Lindros, Rolen, Iverson towards the end, the list goes on and on. Keeping good players around takes talent and we shouldn't waste Burrell because you think his 30+/90+ production isn't worth the money.
I'm not saying resign him to a $14mil/yr deal. That was obviously an overestimation. But guess what: he's not gonna get 14 mil/yr anywhere. Take his market value right now, lower it a bit, and make him an offer he can't refuse. He deserves to finish his career in this town. If you disagree then you truly don't understand what Philly is all about.

This game of baseball is a Business, But it is also a passion!
Most fans and players have a "passion" for this game.
Lets no confuse the two!
1st SIGN PAT and JAMIE...Give um both 2 years
2nd DO NOT TRADE AWAY the young talent in the MINORS!
IF PAT or JAMIE runs out of gas..have others ready
such as Jenkins, Dobbs, Work Golson in that outfield so he can take over in a few years...imagine that speedy outfield!
3rd Pitching, Pitching and MORE PITCHING is the deal, NEVER ENOUGH ARMS as the PHILLES already know...
use whoever has the hot arm for the 5th starter...Happ, Kendrick, and like Golson..work in Carrasco into the rotation

IF a player wants to stay here in Philly and the team wants them, then there is no way they cant work out a deal.
A team MUST gel, they have to BELIEVE they have the support of the fans and the owners of the team.
DONT RUIN a GOOD THING..WE WON and can keep wining IF we are smart. We might not repeat in 2009, but we can and should always be close if not DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN

Lets take a look a this problem from a games won/homeruns for the two players in question. First Moyer, he did have a great run here in Philly, let him finish it out here. This isn't just a case of the prospect of a teary retirement in the future, but, a prospect of a teary retirement of a winning pitcher! Thats something the team should be willing to pay for.
As for The Bat, there is a reason for that name. IF the Phillies lose Pat, then how do you propose to gain those 30 HRs last year? But it doesn't end there. Pat in 2002 hit 37 HR and 116 RBIs. In 2004, even after his wrist injury, he still managed to knock in 24 HRs even when he missed 40 games. In 2005, Pat the Bat hit 32 HRs and 117 RBIs. We all know the "awful" year that Pat had in 2006. Even so, he still managed to pull out 29 HRs and 95 RBIs. In 2007, again, another 30 HRs. So here is my point, what free agent is coming out that can CONSISTENTLY perform like Pat? Yes, ok Manny maybe, but he is completely out of the question. Rocco Baldelli? MAYBE if he stays healthy. The popular belief that Pat is not worth the money is completely unfounded. Not to mention, as a Phillies fan, I appreciate the fact he performs EXTREMELY well against the Mets.

First of all Burrell, was an off and on hitter. Over the years he was never consistent. He has been plauged by injuries in the past and he will more than likely get hurt again. He is one of the best defensive outfielders in the game (even though Charlie takes him out every 9th inning if there is a lead) but the Phils need to save money to help keep some of the younger platers. There are some other players out there that the Phightins could sign for a lower price (i.e. Raul Ibanez, Rocco Baldelli, Jim Edmonds) His last contract was worth 2 years $11 million. If needed, they can move the outfield around. Victorino and Werth can both play any outfield position. Burrell was getting $14 mill just this year alone. I know Ibanez is a left handed bat but Werth is freakin filthy and he can break up the lefties (Utley, Howard, Werth, Ibanez). I do feel bad for Burrell cause he has been with this team when they really sucked. Between Howard, Victorino, Hamels, and Werth (Thats not even all of the players who are eligable for arbitration) I am guessing next years payroll to go up to around $25 million and thats not inclduing players like Madson and Myers.
Moyer is a work horse and a fantastic player to have around in the club house. They guy can pin point where ever he wants to place the ball and his unbelievably slow pitching speeds will fool even the best of hitters. In 08, Moyer only earned $6 mill. and he probably only get a $2 or $3 mill raise. That doesn't even take up that much payroll compared to what Burrell takes up. Moyer is a Philly area native and a great mentor for players like Myers, Hamels, Madson, and Condrey. He knows his stuff. The Phils should sign him for a two year deal and make an offer to stay in the organization if he decides to retire.
Instead of me rambling on and on, here is everything in a nut shell. Don't resign Burrell. Dip into the free agent market and pickup a qualified vet. Sign Moyer for a 2 year deal and make sure he stays in the organization. I love them both but someone has to go.

I am sorry but I forgot to add that even Ken Griffey Jr. has a lower salary than Pat Burrell. Thats right I said it Ken Griffey Jr. He has never had a salary higher than Burrell's $14 mill. The funny part is Griffey already has a ticket to Cooperstown and Pat Burrell has a bigger salary than even when Griffey was in his prime.

I think that Pat's time in Philly MAY be over. It's sad, but let examine this. Positives: In his time here, he averaged about 30 HR's, 90 RBI's and as of late 100+ walks. See how fast that ends? Negatives: My biggest gripe, he gets pulled for defense in the 8th. If he wasn't a liability on defense during the crunch of the late innings, why would they take him out? He was a third baseman in college, that was a sign right there. He has the arm, but not the mobility. He also isn't a CONSISTENT clutch hitter or a consistent hitter for that matter. HOWEVER, if Pat really wants to come back, he'll take less. Considering the outfield market, if I had to make a prediction....he'll be back. As for pitching, the phillies should treat Moyer like Maddux. Bring him back for THIS year. Worry about THIS year. If he wants to continue playing, then talk the following off-season. They should try to get Tazawa. Just think, if he's as good as everyone says he is, that would move everyone else down in the rotation starting with Myers and I think that's perfect. Kendrick needs to learn another pitch before he comes back up.

I would like to point out that Burrell wasn't making $14 million EACH YEAR. He signed for a 6-year, $50 million contract. It was backloaded, and averaged about $8.3 million a year. He didn't make $14 million each year, so stop saying he did.

Hi! Me again! I hope the Phillies sign both Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrell, if only for one more year. OK Pat was not the most consistent ... are any of us in our everyday lives?
He came through when needed and that's what counted.
Everyone on the team should be an MVP. And, Pat, I will miss you as my Sunday Game Plan is in Section 143 right
behind you in left field. I may be old enough to be your Mom... but you are still a cutie with a nice bootie. You handsome devil, you! And, Jamie ... you are not old enough
to be put to pasture ... your pasture is the baseball field ... and that is where you should be next season ... pitching for
the Phillies. Love all of you guys ... you did your best and
you saw what it brought ... a Championship ... for the World
to Seeries. Good Luck in 2009! Bring it back to Philly!
Enjoy the off-season. XXXOOO

Ok, so Pat the Bat may not have been the most consistent hitter. However, from season to season, you know what you got. Now if we take someone like Rocco Baldelli, and compare him to what we would be losing, you'll find an injury prone poor performer. In fact, he has a genetic mitochrondial defect that makes him more prone to injuries than the normal outfielder. That's not slander, it's the facts, look it up. So can we bench the talk of Rocco Baldelli being a suitable replacement for The Bat? Besides, it reminds me of the old addage, "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't".
