Cubs still on Peavy

SAN DIEGO - The Chicago Cubs are still a player in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes, even after the club signed pitcher Ryan Dempster to a $52 million contract extension.

San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday night that he has talked to Cubs GM Jim Hendry earlier in the day and that "they [Cubs] still have interest [in Peavy]."

"They're still a player," Towers said of the Cubs. "... They might have to be created with their finances to make it work."

On Tuesday, the Cubs gave Dempster a four-year contract extension. The 17-game winner last season returns to a rotation that already has Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden and Ted Lilly.

Towers is still looking to wrangle a third team or possibly a fourth team into a potential deal for Peavy, who will make $11 million in 2009 and is owed $63 million over the remainder of his contract.

Ohh man! First, in the morning, the cubs are still pursuing Peavy. Two hours later the cubs aren't talking about Peavy anymore. And now, in the same day, the cubs are still on Peavy.

Wow! I don't know what to believe.

I just hope this ends with the cubs acquiring Peavy. If not this would definitely be like a sequel of the Brian Roberts saga, but now with Jake Peavy. And that would be very frustrating.

Get your story straight, guys. Didn't Carrie Muskat just say today that the Cubs were out?

Also, Corey, I think you mean "creative," not "created."

I hear we are in and i hear we are out. I hope that we stay in and eventually get him. Peavy would be a great addition to an already outstanding rotation. We should be able to clear up some money by shipping Marquis out somewhere so that will help.

Honestly, I'm hoping that the Cubs do NOT acquire Peavy. While I know that he is a legitimate #1, I also know that his home/road splits are pretty drastic. He likes pitching at Petco Park, and I would expect his ERA to go up a full run pitching in a place like Wrigley Field (not a good place for a flyball pitcher). The Cubs DO, however, need to get a left handed bat. They've been talking about getting Hermida or Teahan, and that would definitely help. And if they can find enough players that Andy McFail likes, they should go after Roberts again - that allows Lou to get Soriano out of the leadoff spot and move him down to 6.

Marquis isn't getting "shipped" anywhere, BTW. That is, unless the Cubs can find 7 or 8 million that's laying around to give to somebody who will take him. He's owed I believe 10 or 11 million this year, thanks to his back-loaded contract.

I think it is interesting that over all the reports about peavy since dempster was resigned have been conflicting depending on who was being quoted. All of the reports that I have seen coming from the Cubs say that they are no longer interested, however, Towers continues to say that they are. Seems to me that Towers is trying to keep Peavy's stock high even though there is truly only one team that has a decent possibility of landing him at this time.

Seriously, the front office is really messed up. Let's just assume that every team is in it rather then trying to figure out who's really in it.
