Crosby on the outs in Oakland

It's common knowledge that A's are among the teams who have expressed an interest in free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, who might be the best infielder on the market who isn't named Mark Teixeira. It's also suspected that Oakland will consider signing Orlando Cabrera or Edgar Renteria if Furcal proves too expensive.

All of the above makes it clear that A's general manager Billy Beane has run out of patience with Bobby Crosby. Since winning the 2004 American League Rookie of the Year award, Crosby has played in more than 100 games in a season once -- in 2008, when he batted .237 with a .296 OBP and a .349 slugging percentage with seven homer and 61 RBIs in 145 games.

Crosby will be 29 in January and is scheduled to make $5.25 million in 2009, the final year of a five-year, $12.75 million deal. If the A's sign a free-agent shortstop, it's almost certain that they'll try to deal their No. 1 draft pick from 2001. If they can't move him, he'll be a very expensive backup.

If the A's can get Furcal great, but i don't see that happening, to much money and to many years for beane's taste. Cabrera and Renteria are on the down side of there careers and will want years as well, and OC was not a good clubhouse guy in Chicago. 08 was the first time in 4 years that Crosby was healthy and able to play everyday, he is still young enough that with a full season under his belt that his numbers should improve in 09, and he is a steady SS who paired with Ellis still gives the A's one of the better middle infield combos around.

If we can just trade Crosby, that's $5+ mill off of the payroll for the year - then Furcal's $15 mill would only be like $10 mill. The multiple year contract he wants would definitely present another complication, but man would it be great to have a presence like that in the field, on the basepaths, and in the clubhouse as well.

Crosby never panned out. The guy started his career hot, lost it, and never got it back. We're talking about a guy who should be in his prime, but instead the A's are still waiting fo him to come around. The A's have reduced payroll to be able to rebuild, and the Holliday trade seems to signal the beginning of that. Lock up Furcal, whose an offensive and defensive upgrade, and pair him up with Ellis and you've got scary good middle infielders. Get a power hitter (Giambi?) and maybe this offense will get out of the cellar of A.L. offensive stats.

Any big free agent or big name trade the A's pull off this off season is great to me. Having to watch all the good players come up in the Oakland organization and leave to other teams got old long ago. You look across the league and you see alot of former Oakland Athetic players. ALOT! So getting Holliday for a season and if they sign any of the three short stops I have no prblem saying by to Crosby. And yes, Furcal and Ellis in the middle, that would be awesome!! Though not probable.

If Jack Wilson is dealt, I'd rather have Bobby Crosby over any other Pirates infield option.

Bobby Crosby looked to be very promising when the A's picked him up in 2001, but he never fulfilled his very high expectations. I think it is time for a change. The A's need someone with high energy to run the infield, Furcal would be a great additon to the A's roster but he may prove to be to expensive for Billy Beanes liking. I think he would bring the energy Oakland is looking for but are they willing to pay the money and sign him for the amount of years that he is looking for? Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Rentaria I think they would fit the A's look becuase they need a seasoned shortshp that has the glove and bat that these three shortstops bring to a team. Oakland needs to make a change at shortstop. Crosby is great in the field but we need to look to make a change and bring in some like Furcal, Cabrera or Renteria that has a great bat along with a great glove, to help the A's move foward as a ball club.

what's all the hype about furcal? everyone hates on crosby because he's injury-prone. it's not like furcal missed the majority of last season with an injury or anything. and it's not like his terrible defense helped the dodgers make an early exit from the playoffs, either. that being said, it's not like crosby has done anything for the a's since 2004, when he was fortunate enough to win the rookie of the year in a year without any good competition (after all, he only hit .239 that year). what the a's need to do is develop a middle infielder who can hit worth a crap. i get tired of watching ellis and crosby go out there every day when neither of them can even hit .250 over the course of 150+ games. furcal isn't worth the price tag.

Furcal is a very good shortstop. The A's are not going to let him fly by the A's are going to sighn him then get a power hitter like Giambi. Then get help on their pitching like Burnett or Garland. The A's are goung to be a whole lot BETTER!
