Burrell hasn't heard from Phillies
While hanging out at Sunday night's Eagles game, Pat Burrell reiterated his desire to return to the Phillies.
"You never know what's going to happen," Burrell told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I think it's been very clear that I want to stay, and they know that. But at the same time, I don't know what the direction of the organization is. Either way, I've got nothing but positive things and thanks to say to the organization for my time here. And obviously, this past couple weeks has been the end of it all. I want to be back, but I don't know what's going to happen."
The Phillies have exclusive negotiating rights with Burrell through Friday. His return seems to hinge on the number of years he's willing to accept.
Asked about a hometown discount, Burrell said, "When the situation comes up I'll address it then. Who knows if that's even something that's going to go on? I think I'm at the point in my career with this organization that they're going to have no problem being honest with me and telling me what they want to do. As a player, that's all you want. You'd rather it be that way. I can certainly handle the truth."

I hope they can bring Burrell back. But at a price that is good for both sides.

I wish they would stop goofing around with this. With what both the Yankees and the Cardinals are willing to give up for a rent-a-year contract with Holliday just resign someone that is loyal and basically consistant. I do not want to see basically Kevin Roberson try and play outfield or those of his ilk.
Four times in the Phillies history they have had 3 players hit 30 hr's or more ....the common denominator in two of those was Pat Burrell. Considering his offensive rank in all outfielders , his on base percentage and the value of having him on the team and in the locker room make a play for the hometeam discount now before some of the outrageous numbers pollute the pool when the bidding starts for the likes of a very comparable Adam Dunn. And I would much rather have Burrell....not even close. the Phillies gate alone for each of those Wrold Series games had to be over 1 mill and the team is setting new records for merchandising. We have the second strongest spring training following, second only to the NY Yankees. I am not advocating breaking the bank but I feel Burrell realizes how much money there is to go around if he stays and they should be able to work something out.

It would be nice to get 2 more years out of Burrell...very few left-fielders will put up those numbers. And he was consistent all year. But I think the organization is looking at Greg Dobbs as a suitable replacement, which I also agree with. Dobbs had the best batting average on the team of the regulars and if given more opportunities to start, I think he can do the job. Sadly, that means bye-bye to Burrell, which I find depressing, but they may feel like they can't afford to pay him with 10 arbitration eligible players, including Howard & Hamels. Those 2 alone are going to really suck up some budget. And then we have to throw away 8.5 million on Adam Eaton, again. UGH! Well, best of luck to Pat!

Burrell is an asset to this club in so many ways. This season he was the only one hitting in big games early in the season. It's not how much you hit, but when you hit and he consistently came through this year for the Phillies. He also played on some terrible teams from the past and while he was expected to carry those teams based on his performance in Miami, this year's championship exemplifies how naive it is to expect that one player does a championship team make-no way. His value in the clubhouse can not be overstated. Just wait til the fans start booing Chase Utley when he has a down year, who will be there to give him some perspective? Plus, Gregg Dobbs is not an asset defensively, even over the lumbering Burrell. His bat is best suited in a pinch hitting role. He is not a good enough field player to put him in left field or anywhere else for a world championship team. We saw the difference defense made in this World Series and thank goodness Charlie Manuel stuck with Feliz-who also comes up with big hits when needed. Baseball is all about patience and when dealing with these players, fans and mgmt. need to also be patient and understand where the real value lies when creating a championship team year after year; not making impulsive decisions that give up more than we get.

Holliday is going to the A's. So that deal is not going to happen with the Phillies.
I like that Pat wants the team to be honest...because I'm sure they will be.

I think that Pat has earned at least some kind of offer from the phillies. Without Pat, and a little help from Chase Utley, the phillies wouldn't have won too many games at the beginning of the season. Pat can certainly carry the team for streaks. The team will miss his bat in the lineup over the long run. His defense is not as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. Pat has a few more good years in him until he become a defensive liability.
Growing up watching Pat play for the phillies, I've seen his good times and his bad times. He is certainly a big part of this team's character. I believe he brings a passion to the game that is much like the other great players on this team, rollins victorino utley and howard. I would love to see Pat stay around for a few more years!

The Phillies might be doing a little bit of what Boston did in '05. They didn't resign Orlando Cabrera, Pedro Martinez, or Derek Lowe and got 5 first round draft picks. Burrell is a Type A free agent so it wouldn't surprise me if the Phillies let him go. But I think everybody above is right; Burrell deserves to remain with the Phillies.

I have been watching the Phillies and Pat Burrell since Pat was playing first base. I think that the Phillies owe it to Pat to let him stay in Philadelphia. He adds that extra personality to the club. He is a lifer in Philly.

I think the Phillies should bring Pat back. His defense got them to the postseason two years in a row. He will get you 30 homers, 90-100 RBI and hold runners with his arm.
I also think they should take a closer look at their hitting coach, Milt Thompson. If there has been one consistent weakness with this team over the last few years, it has been hitting with runners in scoring position - as made painfully clear through much of the postseason. Burrell, Howard, Rollins, Utley, Jenkins and Ruiz all went through prolonged hitting slumps this year. Too many times this season did we see a dramatic infield shift for Howard, a low and outside pitch and he would ground it to the right side (because you can't pull those) instead of going the other way. Burrell has strong starts where he uses all parts of the field and then becomes pull happy for the rest of the year. Howard's stance was more of a crouch in his MVP year of 2006, those low and away pitches weren't so hard to see and get to (the higher stance seemed to start when he had his quad injury last season).
If they're going to let Pat Burrell and his 30+ homers and 90-100 RBI leave and replace him with a mishmash of Baldelli or Hairston or other bargain basement signing, they will need to improve their situational hitting as a team. I think we've seen they can win WITH Pat.

I fear Burrell's value decreasing hitting in another ballpark less friendly to homerun hitters. The Phillies are a good fit for him, but they are in a position to make their team even better without Burrell, unfortunately for him.

I really hope that they bring him back but he also might considering retiering. I was at a game when J. A. Happ was pitching against the Mets and he was unstopable I really like him and if they bring him up we will be celebrating next year.

I really hope that they bring back Pat and if any one was at the parade on 15 and locust you know waht we were chanting,"ONE MORE YEAR''. We need a leader like him and also i was at the game against the Mets when J.A. Happ pitched and Ireally think they should bring him back. If they do we will be out on Broad street next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@robneb07...the name is Chris Roberson and he is no longer with the organization. The Phillies traded him to the Orioles before the 2008 season.

I like Pat and would not be disappointed to see the Phillies bring him back for another two or three years but I think that the Phillies could do alot better with someone else at the left-field position. Have had enough of his long slumps and numerous strikeouts over the years. Would be great to see someone out there who would be a consistent hitter. Considering the number of RBIs that Burrell had last year, it would also be interesting to know how many men Burrell left on base for the year when he failed to get a hit when batting.

I know that everyone gets down on Pat for being a streak
hitter but that is just the way it is with some power hitters.
Pat reminds me of Dave Kingman when he played for
San Francisco years ago. I truly believe that it would be a
mistake to let Pat go because of the support he gives
Howard and the leadership that he brings to the team
being one of the longest tenured Phils. Lets be honest
fans the Phils have an awsome middle of the lineup.
Burrell also plays a very respectable Left Field and has a great arm. Rueben, I know Gillick wanted to trade Burrell
a year ago but here is your opportunity to make your first
BIG Decision as GM. KEEP PAT BURRELL!

There's no one out there that can duplicate what he does for less money and that's not even counting his leadership and the team chemistry.
Bring Pat back.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, I think Burrell is gone, and will wind up a Dodger when they cant resign Manny... makes sense there. To not even speak to Burrell is a huge mistake on their part... consistant player. What a shame.

**would decrease. Sorry to all you that had the unfortunate task of reading that.

Not making a serious offer to Burrell would be a HUGE mistake, as well as a slap in his face. Pat has made it very clear that he wants to stay with the team. Some people in this business base their "buying" decisions strictly on past performance statistics. Others look at team chemistry, and whether the individual will fit in, or tear the team apart, and still others focus exclusively at the bottom line. Burrell's stats for a #5 are VERY impressive, he truly bleeds Phillies red, and he seems willing to negotiate to ensure that the team still has the resources to address other needs. I really hope that Reuben wakes up and realizes the TOTAL value that Pat Burrell brings to this team.

Pat Burrell was signed to a contract that averaged 15 million a year! They expected and deservedly so, a guy who averaged 45 hr and 130 plus RBIs. That is who I and the Phillies expected. He was on the verge of what I thought was greatness until Thome arrived. It was from that point forward, the modern day Burrell arrived. His number were 30 and 90, and horrible defense, and laughable base running. I'd have him return but at less than 8 million a year. He stole money from this organization. How many strike threes down the middle of the plate, with him jumping back with his arms up do you want to see? Yes, he got a key hit in game 5, but prior to that he was terrible in the post season. Let's not let emotions cloud our judgment. Remember those horrible long term contracts Daulton, and company got after the 93' season? Again, Burrell can stay, and I'd welcome him back, but at a modest contract. His numbers are what Superstars are getting at the all-star break. 30 and 90 are what Tony Perez averaged in the 70's. It was great then, but average for a 15 million dollar slugger today.

I think the Phillies should resign Pat The Bat. He played an important part in getting the team to the World Series just as any other team member did. Sure he was in a slump there for a while but what player did not have their slump. Pat is a great outfielder and batter and the Phils should keep him on the team!

Pat must go simply because the Phillies can't afford him. They have got to come up with HUGE money for Howard and Hamels - probably 12 million INCREASE from where they are plus all the others. Simply put Pat is not worth $14 million but even if he were the Phillies cannot afford it. While I like Dobbs it does not answer the question of a right-handed bat. Of course Werth is equal or better player than Pat (better IMHO - consider he did not play consistently until September when you look at the HR and RBI numbers). But we need more than one RH bat.
Pat should be a DH in the AL.

WHO CARES ABOUT PAT THE BAT , LET HIM GO , HIS LEGS ARE DONE !!! ALL HE CAN DO IS GET SOME HR HERE N THERE , WE BEEN TRYIN TO GET RID OF HIM FOR 2 YRS , NOW WE CAN .. SEE YA LATER , PAT .... HE IS BAD TO THE PHILLIES FANS ANYWAY , HE DON'T SIGN AUTOGRAPHS MOST OF THE TIME JUST LIKE OTHER PHILLIES .... ROLLINS , FLYIN HAW.. HOWARD , THEY ARE TRASH !!
