Burnett interested in Braves

As of Friday afternoon, the Braves had only had some preliminary discussions with A.J. Burnett. But as the Jake Peavy trade negotiations drag out, they are looking at their other options and Burnett will be one of their primary targets as they attempt to significantly improve their starting rotation.

Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, said that the Braves are definitely a team that would interest his client, who certainly isn't limiting his options to teams within close proximity to his Maryland home.  Braunecker said Burnett has a high level of respect for manager Bobby Cox and the Braves organization.

"I've never said that (Burnett) wanted to play closer to his home," Braunecker said. "If all things are equal, including money and the competitive capability of the team, playing closer to home is always a good option.  Does that preclude a club like Atlanta that's not closer to home? It doesn't if you determine they are going to be competitive.  That's as much of a priority as proximity.  Geography isn't the issue that it's been perceived to be."

The Braves will make a run at number of top free agents in attempt to land two top-caliber starting pitchers.  Derek Lowe and Burnett appear to be their top two targets, ranking just ahead of Ryan Dempster.

dirty numbers in the AL.. If he went back to the NL those numbers would be even better.. just hopefully he stays healthy if in Atlanta

Get Peavy, Burnett, Juan Rivera, Edgar Renteria, and bring back Ohman, Hampton, and Smoltz. This team will win the division on pitching.

Lineup:

Schafer/Blanco

Johnson/Prado

Jones

Rivera

McCann

Francoer

Kotchman

Renteria

Starting Pitchers:

Peavy

Burnett

Jurrgens

Campillo

Hanson/Hampton/Hudson

Relief:

Soriano

Gonzalez

Smoltz

Moylan

Ohman

Acosta

That line up really looks nice. I wouldn't mind the Braves going after Rivera. He's young, has a strong arm and if allowed to play a full season can produce great offensive numbers... the Braves are going to be busy this off-season...

Now that Burnett took back the close to home thing, I think the Braves will go all in for him. If we get the Peavy deal done and quick, we can lure Furcal back and possibly another pitcher like Lowe. If that happens, we wont sign Hampton and we have to make Glavine retire unless he will join Smoltz in the bullpen. I think Campillo might have to go back to the pen. Parr, Morton/Reyes, and Stockman will stay in AAA while Hanson will be in the rotation.

we do NOT want Furcal back in Atlanta, I promise

If Towers can't except 4 major leauge ready players for one guy who only plays every fith day. He needs to be thrown off a tower... Furcal has lost a step or two and we got rid of Renteria just in time. My vote is for Orlando Cabrera who could alleviate any concerns Peavy might have... C'mon Bravos! Lets turn up the heat on the stove!!

Don't give up Yunal Escobar plus for Peavy. I agree if SD wants more than 4mlb ready players. forget it. go after AJ Burnet. Keep Hampton See if Smoltz can go back to the rotation. Bull pen will be great if all come back Healthy
