Braves still cautiously optimistic about Peavy
The Braves had some reason to be encouraged when they saw CBS Sportsline.com's report that they might be nearing completion of a deal to land Jake Peavy. But at the same time, they were also somewhat surprised because they hadn't gained that same sense through their latest conversations with the Padres.
Braves general manager Frank Wren and Padres general manager Kevin Towers have talked about Peavy for more than a month and the Braves have provided multiple offers over the last week. But as of Thursday morning, the Braves hadn't gained a sense that they were any "closer" to getting Peavy than they'd been at any point earlier this week.
With that being said, a deal could still certainly be completed at some point today as long as the Padres are satisfied with the offer and Peavy agrees to waive his no-trade clause.
In exchange for Peavy, Sportsline reported the Padres would receive Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes, and either right-handed reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two Minor League left-handed pitchers, possibly Jeff Locke or Cole Rohrbough. Earlier reports had the Braves only exchanging Escobar, Hernandez and Morton or Reyes.

I can tell you right now if the deal goes down, it will today or tomorrow. I will be surprised if Peavy vetoes it, but he probably wont. The Pads better not be changing the offer cause if they do, I suggest the Braves go KJ, Jones, Gorkys, Boyer, and Reyes and they lose Escobar.

There are only two roads to us being a good team next year: Peavy + Lowe or Dempster + Lowe. Anyone think Dempster will actually sign with a team without a bear on their uniform?
That being said, It's in the Padres best interest to do something by the end of the night tonight. Free Agency opens tomorrow, and both the Cubs and Braves will be turning their attention more to free agents than this month-long Peavy drama. The Pads potential compensation will plummet, and since they basically have a front office mandate to lower payroll, he has to go somewhere. I think their cold feet will evaporate about 6 o clock tonite and they'll pull a trigger before opportunity moves on to another door.

We are giving up way too much for Peavy. Don't mortgage the farm as so many teams do.

Right on jesusfreak...This has been going on for over a month now and the Braves have made offer after offer, if I'm Frank Wren I lay it on the table and tell them they got until 7 p.m. to say yes or no and then move on to prepare for the free agent market for starting pitching

jsmitty couldn't have said it any better, as well as jesusfreak.
this has gone to far, and Wren should have hopefully set a deadline.
Braves fans will rejoice should this go down, and Turner Field may see more sellouts with Peavy. s

the askin price for a pitcher who spent a third of the season last year on the DL is far to high. of coarse peavy is an awsome talent. but to give them three mlb ready pitchers, and an all star caliber shortstop, and a speedster like hernandez is just about outrageous. they see we realy want him. so they are pretty much asking for the farm. doesent that sound like way to much to everybody else?

doesnt sound like 2 much to me. first of all we r only giving up 2 pitchers. reyes/morton and boyer/one of 2 minor leaguers. weve all seen what reyes is capable, absolutely nothing and morton is still a couple years from being productive on a playoff calaber team like were trying to be. while escobar is clearly talented, he spent most of the season with nagging injuries. and the way i c it it hernandez doesnt matter cuz we will have schafer and jones for the next decade any way so we really wont miss and of those guyz and we r getting a top 5 pitcher for the next 4-5 years

I also believe it is time for the Braves to set a dead line for this deal to get done. I think that they are trying to see how desperate the Braves will go for Peavy. The deal on the table is a good deal for the Padres, and they are trying to squeeze a deal out of them like the Rangers got for TEX. Hopefully it will get done. The ball is in Padres court and the time to decide is NOW!!

I have been a Braves fan before they moved from Milwaukee, I believe they have made a great offer for Peavy but it seems that the padres are trying to fatten their pockets and not cutting salaries, so they are dragging their feet instead of trying to cut salaries, it seem like a lot of bull to me.
