Agent: Furcal to Mets just a rumor

Don't be fooled by reports out of a Spanish-language publication, El Caribe, that state the Mets have offered Rafael Furcal a contract to play second base. Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, said on Monday that the two sides haven't talked, and Mets general manager Omar Minaya has insisted in recent weeks that he plans to open next season with Luis Castillo at second base.

It was the second false report out of a Spanish-language publication this month. Last week, Kinzer refuted a report out of El Universal stating that free agent Francisco Rodriguez had flown to New York for a physical examination, hinting that a signing might be close. In truth, the Mets hadn't even made an offer to K-Rod, though Kinzer said on Monday that the two sides plan on talking at some point before Thanksgiving.

The Mets did have interest in signing Furcal to play second base three years ago, though he ultimately signed a deal to play shortstop with the Dodgers.

MR.Hudson is the answer at 2'nd base. Castillo got hurt, then he got fat and out of shape. It was obvious to us fools who who work very hard and can't wait for those week-end games to go running and pluck our $200+dollars for me and my two children to watch castillo missed ground ball after ground ball because his belly has gotten too big for him to properly field his position. Not to mention his lack of range to his right or left. Mr.castillo seemed so bored at times.Maybe he was just dreaming about his 6 million dollar unemployment, rather than the mundane such as a baseball game.

I agree with Hudson fitting in with New York.He is cheaper and is a 2nd baseman. If they do get Furcal it would take him the whole Spring Training to move to 2nd and then his bat won't generate enough pop.

Why all this talk for a second baseman. The cheeper player and more efective at this moment can be veteran Jose Valentin. Mets don't need Hudson nor Furcal, in first place I don't know what Omar was thinking when he sign Castillo with this ridiculas contract.

Number talks for them self. Just look into Jose Valentin numbers and you be surprise to see how much better player he is. Two years he play with the Mets he brang decent power to the plate and a good slugg. ptc. Valentin, plus keep Jose Reyes awake in SS with his fewes error those years. Omar needs to try bringing Valentin back, send him to a medical fisical, if he pass this and is healthy, offer one year 5Mil dollars, bet it's cheeper then Hudson or Furcal and a more efective player. Try trading Luis Castillo for two middle relivers.

Why would the Mets give Valentin 5 mil when they could probably sign him for less than 1 mil? Who would want to pay Castillo all that money , never mind give up any valuable player for him?

are you kidding me with valentin??? i liked valentin alot, but i dont want a 45 year old 2nd baseman!!! castillo is done, bring hudson in, or the idea of furcal at 2nd isn't bad either. i do think something big is going to happen soon though.

Haha.Valentin! He is so old and the Met's need to stack up on cheaper and younger players. They have so many veterans, they just need a younger player.

castillo(i promise you)is 2 or 3 years older than his claimed age..the arthritis in his knees will only get worse..the multi year signings of elduque, castillo and alou were inexcusable.
we dont need an all-star run producer at every position..if we get bullpen depth and a good right handed bat(jose guillen?)we can rotate several vets at the position, such as ramon martinez, damian easley, etc, while we wait for young
minor leaguers like havens or tejada to develop..

Is Tommy Herr still around? He had good pop for a second basement.

Is Tommy Herr still around? He had good pop for a second basement.....

I love Valentin as a utility backup but not to start. Besides, they'd be better off leaving the right side completely open and get some big name pitching. Stick anyone at second
get some bullpen help and a couple quality starters. Maybe Heilman would consider moving to second, he can't pitch.

You just have to believe that it must have been Jose Valentin himself that has suggested the Mets offer him $5M year in the post above - LOL.

i hope the mets sign hudson so furcal can come here to oakland

Murphy at 2nd, Chavez/Tatis is left, you get good righthanded power against lefty's and a dude who can get yoyu some hits and flash the leather vs. rightys and its about time Endy got some playing time deminished returns is a crap theory like addition by subtraction, no reason Murph shouldn't play, nor should his playing time block Endy "The Catch" Chavez, with the cash you save u can shelf Castillo and get a pitcher to anchor Pelfrey and Maine in the back-end of the rotation.

castillo was a disaster waiting to happen. omar fell for the need to keep him and his agent got a bundle for damaged goods. now omar wont be able to deal him. let him go. bring back backman. it is crucial we get a quality closer and let heilman ( i want to be a starter--lmao) start in double A. he is one of the biggest disasters last yr. we also need a top starter or do a trade, like heilman and castillo for (i hate the 7 train redneck john rocker--lol). the bullpen needs fresh blood . please no 3peat my difibulator is down

We need solid ''PITCHING'!

'' PITCHING''

Starting the season with Castillo at second base would be among the worst moves that Minaya/Manuel could make. Manuel stated that the best players will play regardless of contract status. The team was horrific when Castillo started. Put Murphy at second base....he played there in Binghampton although many seem to not recognize that. He did pretty well and focus on left field and sell Castillo for a bag of peanuts and even offer to pick up part of his contract

The only pitcher worth obtaining via the trade market is Jake Peavy....This is best pitcher that would further solidify the rotation.....OF Murphy, OF Martinez,,P Hielman, P Parnell, P Kunz and others may satisfy the San Diego needs for youth....Why are the Mets not jumping on RP Rodriguez??? Forget all the negative BS, the bottom line, he set a record with 62 saves, and has unflappable past numbers and is only 26 yrs. old!!! He has lost velocity? Bad arm? BS! What about the F.Agent. middle reliever that is LH and pitched for the the Dodgers???? Rockies' Fuentes is getting older....Why aren't the Mets talking to Pat Burrell???? What about bringing back RP David Weathers?? He pitched well for them the first time....

The best trade that the Mets could make is Omar Minaya to the A's for Billy Beane!!! Tell the Wilpons to re-sell the team back to Doubleday! The Wilpons are clueless as baseball moguls....The new stadium should not have been named after corpoate sponsers.....It should still have Shea's name on the new stadium.. Finally I think the Mets should bring back Ed Bouchee and Jay Hook to shore up their bench!

Rubén Gotay is a second baseman as good as anyone. He just needed assurance that he would play everyday. He has pop in his bat and plays a happy kind of baseball. I think he shouldn't have been traded to the Braves. Valentín was a good player with some power but due to injuries he hasn't seen much action lately. However, he is a fighter and I know he will look good in spring training. The good thing about Valentín is that he brings positive thinking to the team. The best years Reyes had at shortstop were when Valentín played second.

The comment that started with . . . "Murphy at 2nd, Chavez/Tatis is left," is almost word for word what I said to my wife a about month ago (also a die hard METS fan). This was the first time ever for me reading my exact feelings on a blog. Kudos! I have to re-iterate that comment. . . Murphy at 2nd, Chavez/Tatis is left, you get good righthanded power against lefty's and a dude who can get yoyu some hits and flash the leather vs. rightys and its about time Endy got some playing time deminished returns is a crap theory like addition by subtraction, no reason Murph shouldn't play, nor should his playing time block Endy "The Catch" Chavez, with the cash you save u can shelf Castillo and get a pitcher to anchor Pelfrey and Maine in the back-end of the rotation. . . . Chavez has done nothing short of help the club tremendously. Pitching is where it's at for us!!! Come on front office, get with the program already! We Met fans are getting weary of spending ridiculous $$ on contracts for ~0~ return! ie: "Moises Alou", "Mo Vaughn", "Jeromy Burnitz" among others! Where's Edgardo Alfonzo when you need him?!?!?
